madKE35coupe Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 Hey guys just wanting to know how you twin cammers out there get the best power out of your 4age without breaking the bank? Quote
Twinky Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 Keep it serviced regularly. Don't stuff with it. There is no cheap way of adding power to a N/A motor. Quote

mitch82 Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 11.5-1 comp, wade 800a cams, ported head, balanced rods and pistons, ecu = 103 rwkw @8800rpm. Quote
TOMsGPTurbo Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 Cheapest way is to fill up with premium fuel :) (and like Twinky said, regular services ie: oil & filter) Quote
Twinky Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 So..... what budget did you have in mind? Quote
ke70dave Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 the most expensive part about any efi engine modification is the ECU. good exhaust and good intake, and probably bit of extra compression (headgasket or shaving the head a bit) you can get away with the factory computer. but start talking about uprated camshafts and porting the head, and you really do need a good aftermarket ecu to run it. people will say "ooh i had X camshafts running on stock ecu and it was fine", maybe it did run fine, but if you are only getting 65% of the benifit you could have if you tuned it properly, whats the point? i had this predicament with the 4age in my ke70. after doing exhaust and intake, if i bought camshafts - camshafts - ~700 cam gears - ~250 instalation (i didnt want play with shims on expensive cam shafts) - ~300 (large guess, but probably about right) might as well get a bit of porting, i was going to have a go at this myself, but if you paid someone, potentially $300-500 Then an aftermarket ecu, sprint 500 haltech looked good - ~1200 (installation DIY, but if you paid someone, potentially another $500) getting somneone else to tune it, potentially $500 put a thin headgasket while i was at it and get the head checked, might as well get a 3 angle valve grind jobby (whatever its called) ~500+ add all that up, and not much change from about 3000... now one could argue that the ECU doesnt really count, as that is a supporting mod for any future mods, but still, its a shite load of cash to outlay. you may pick up bargains, but i like brand new parts. for $3000, a 4agte is on the cards....and you will get alot more power out of one of those. but somewill say, that 3k is worth it, to get a screaming N/A engine. which is fine, but i personally couldnt justify that kind of cash!! parrot Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 The only cheap thing you can do, assuming you can do the work yourself, is to put a thinner metal head gasket on it. Extractors are fairly cheap but not really necessary. An exhaust is worthwhile but presumably you already have that, hoepfully you didn't go too big. Cams are expensive, headwork expensive, much more duration and you need aftermarket computers. etc etc Quote
