kylo33710 Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 hey, i live in australia and i am about to get my provisionary license, my dad baught me a corolla ke55 as my first car because it's underpowered and can still be made to race once iget my full license. when we baught it it was from an old man who said it had a bad idle and sounded like it was dying, but for $150 we baught it anyway. later to discover it had a lumpy head cam, flat-top pistons and a shaved head. the car sounds fairly normal in higher revs (loudish though) and sounds like a lawn mower at idle. is there anyway to make it less obvious that i have these mods? i know they cannot physically see them but would turning up the idle help? and other ideas? thanks Quote
kickn5k Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 possibly a nice exhaust That will help a little, it will stop it from "popping" at the tail pipe at idle. Take it and get it dyno tuned it might just be a bit rich at idle, leaning it off a bit will also help. Last resort would be setting idle speed a touch higher to smooth it out. Quote
altezzaclub Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 Certainly get the exhaust quiet, then wear a hat and a fake grey beard.. It all depends on how you drive it, and what time of day you are out there... I've never been stopped in the KE, but I only drift around traffic islands when there is no traffic around and I'm not out doing laps at night. You only have to ask yourself what the cops look for- Noisy exhaust, too low, fat rims, car is racing another, car is drifting around corners, car is travelling faster than other traffic, car has 'P' plates... philbey Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 I would suggest the following: - More timing advance, 10+ degrees but be warned your total advance will need to be constrained for this to work. There are plenty of ways to do this, such as regraphing, or running an ignition module with curve control - increase idle speed. Sounds smooth just fast. My big cam idles at 1200-1500rpm - Use a stock flywheel, not a lightened one. One reason flywheels weigh what they do is to dampen the motor's vibrations somewhat. Go back to a stock one if the current one is lightened. 1 Quote
oh what a nissan feeling! Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 An expensive but gauranteed fix. twin webbers, + tune, in my experience will make any cam sound like a baby. Quote
ke70dave Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 more mufflers! and point the last muffler at the ground not straight out. Quote
parrot Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 The only way to realistically tame it down is to put a milder cam in it. It will probably be a lot nicer to drive too, which is probably a good thing. Quote
kylo33710 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Report Posted July 30, 2012 it also has a full exhaust system, not sure what it is but it sounds great. (would attract cops though) it does have a lightened flywheel but it came with a spare stock flywheel also. it has twin webbers also, but i think i am going to put a stock carbie in to make it look that little bit less modified. do you guys think a cop would know what a lumpy cam sounds like? even if i set the idle at 1200-1500, and if i ever got pulled over i would just switch the car straight off, that's what you're suppose to do anyway, right? oh what a nissan feeling! Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 find a guru, and get those webbers tuned. Quote
kylo33710 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Report Posted July 30, 2012 any tips on how i should say i want them tuned? Quote
oh what a nissan feeling! Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 No, tbh not really. We had L series datsuns, so without any experience with K motors i can't make any recomendations. We had some serious cams at times, but this old rally bloke we used to use could get it to purr like a kitten. don't take them to any tuner, you need an experienced webber tuner Quote
aurnob88 Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 get it tuned properly, get a better muffler, Quote
kylo33710 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Report Posted July 30, 2012 so i should aim for quiet exhaust, make sure the car looks stock as a rock, and get it tuned by someone who knows what they're doing with webber carbs? thanks for all the help guys Quote
