mitch13 Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Hey all, The speedo in my KE70 is to fast by about 20ks. I heard that if i run an electronic speedo that i will get a correct reading. Is this true? Any info on how they work will be appreciated. Mitch Quote
bruce Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Yeah, you can get a speedo corrector kit from Jaycar electronics: jaycar Quote
Teddy Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Sorry mate, it wont work... * Requires car to be fitted with electronic type speed sensor. It will not work with a cable type system * Quote
bruce Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Ok, is it a big task to convert from cable to electronic? Quote
Teddy Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 id say don't bother - if you speedo is playing up, replace the unit in the console; its not that hard to do :laff: ill think more about it 2 morrow, good night! Quote
Medicine_Man Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Wouldn't you just replace the speedo drive in the gearbox with the correct item? Quote
Teddy Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 because the copper element in the speedo drive in the cluster has more of a tendiancy to loose its strength over 20 +++ years of work. Think about it, on the output shaft of the gearbox, theres a plastic helicoil cutt gear which the speedo cable drive runs off - unless the cog has too much backlash, (resulting in slightly unresponsive speedo?) or the actual speedo cable is foobared someway, theres really not THAT much down that end of the line = that could go wrong.. Raven Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Gearbox swaps would make them read differently perhaps? From what I've read, the extension housing has to come off on some gearboxes in order to change the speedo drive.... Quote
Medicine_Man Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 I've had the same problem when I swapped boxes before. There is like 1 10mm bolt that you undo and you pull the speedo drive out and put the new on in, Its seriously not that hard.. Quote
Teddy Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Good Point.. i was just assuming stock box, stock motor, same cluster.. yada yada Quote
demuire Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 If it really was a problem (like if you changed gearbox or diff ratios etc) you can get mechanical adaptors to fix the speedo. They aren't cheap though. Quote
mitch13 Posted August 14, 2006 Author Report Posted August 14, 2006 OK. Its a stock box, and stock cluster. It has a set of 15 insh wheels on it though but i don't think it would make the speedo read 20+ on the actual speed. Even if i change the speedo drive it will still be wrong so I just thought getting an electronic one would fix both problems. Whats your guys suggestions, just leave it and guess how fast I'm going or what? Quote
Teddy Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 if wheels are different rolling diameter, speedo will be out. Quote
bruce Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Here's an example calculation for the speedo correction (with tyre diameter taken into account): Speedometer Drive Corrections Quote
camerondownunder88 Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Hi, The speedo in my KE30 went about one year ago. So I took it to an instrument place in Brisbane. The guy there rebuilt it for me cheap (forget actual price now) and he told me that gear box oil after a while works pas the seal at the end of the speedo cable in the box and slowly works its way up to the speedo. The little bit that gets there he told me eats away some rubber used in speedos and gets between the 2 spinning discs and sticking them together and makes them turn faster increasing the reading and the oil also does a few more bad things. So this could be your problem just starting as mine was about 20KM/h out then a month later I would be in first gear and the speedo would be on the 2nd time around the clock. Was bloody funny when the mechanic drove my car he crapped him self when he read 180KM/h on the speedo in a 60 zone...lol So get it looked at and if you replace speedo gears do seals as well as it will save replacing them a week later when they die.
