If you have access to decent octane fuel, 10:1 is a good compression ratio to aim for.  Different markets had various compression ratios from standard so realistically you need to measure and work out what you have. Often the pistons will have the ratio cast into the piston crown.  But you can’t assume the head has never been touched previously, although it may only have had a light skin previously.

    if you have a good machinist locally, they can probably advise you. 

    don't go too far though. It’s no fun trying to drive around a car that pings evrytime you put it under load. 

  2. Start off by checking the health of your engine with a compression test. That will determine whether everything else is worth doing now. If the compression test isn’t good, you will need to have a look at the bottom end. The motor I described above never had the bottom end touched. 

    Then it would be port and polish the head with a shave to raise compression, camshaft of your choice ( err toward the milder range), extractors and a 1 3/4 inch exhaust. If you know a good machinist, get your flywheel lightened. 

    Carbs are not hard, the accelerator linkage is the hardest bit.  You don’t need to change to an electric fuel pump.  The standard fuel pump is fine

     

  3. So we are in the new place as of yesterday, and the AE86 is the first to make it across today. Got an unregistered single use permit and drove across via the “most direct route”.

    Of course initially the car didn’t want to start, but some new 98 octane sorted that out. Then on a tentative initial excursion there was a bit of a rattle from the front right. Turned out the top nut on the damper insert was slightly loose. 

    Then the drive across. Hella fun to drive after all this time!

    The other two will now need to come on a truck and then I can get things underway at last

  4. All my manuals are in storage at present. Can someone remind me how to back off the rear drums on a KE1x, they are pretty seized  

    I’ve got it up in the air with the wheel off and trying to flick the notched wheel on the cylinder through the two access holes in the backing plate?

    Flick it up or down?

     

  5. Has anyone used the rubbers from Phil’s in a KE1x or KE2x. Interested in fitment. 

    I seem to recall that the RX3 springs are meant to fit in a KE2x so possibly the rubbers may fit. 

    I’ve got some urethane ones I got from Japan, but unsure whether to use those or actual rubber. Have gone away from urethane everywhere else.

Getting ready for our big move to the new three car garage (with attached house).  Despite regularly popping out to talk to them all, I’m sure they were starting to doubt me.  Reminds me I really should give them names.  Here’s no.1 poking her nose out after seeing sunlight for the first time in a long time

    So a day of freeing up jammed calipers and the like.

    I did wonder why it was so hard to push, but then found this!  It was fine when I last moved it about 3 yrs ago. In my defence, it was hidden up against the side fence.

    Not looking forward to moving my parts store, but am looking forward to a short blast in the AE86 on a temporary permit, and getting that on a club permit at last. 

  7. Wow that is a beauty.

    don't underestimate the 2TC. I had one in a Celica many years ago and with basic head work plus compression, mid range cam, exhaust, lightened fly wheel and twin Weber side draft carbs it screamed. Plus assuming you are US based, a 3TC upgrade gives you 200 extra cc. This sort of work isn’t hard, and is hella fun.  

    The ‘modern’ way is to install a newer EFI engine, but bolting the engine/trans/diff in is the easy bit. The fuel and electrical systems are not. And unless you can do this yourself, will cost quite a bit. 

    And then you may also need to look at upgrading brakes etc.  With the T engine, the brakes can probably remain with an overhaul and better pads. 

    Do some reading around the forum and go from there.

  8. Yep. My wife would however see it the other way, although the shed has been a sticking point in the house search. Plus daughter wants this, and son wants that. 

    Fortunately we are all happy!

    they can even park their cars in the driveway, or on the street. There is a car pecking order here and Corolla’s take precedence

  9. Exciting news news in the Parrot household as I finally have a shed that does justice to the collection!  A three car garage!

    I will now have all three cars in a position where they can actually be worked on, instead of crammed down the side of the current garage  where they are essentially inaccessible.  Meanwhile the AE86 won’t be permanently covered in sawdust from son’s bat repairs.

    In a few months after settlement you can expect a photo with the doors up and cars inside!  

    Wife says, you will have to throw some of your old parts out.  Err no says I. I’ll be putting in racking for those.

    Oh, there is a house attached but that’s the boring bit.
