demuire Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 I'm not sure if this has been posted up before, but this is pretty cool. I want to learn how to fibreglass. Then I'd probably fibreglass my entire car, just cause I could. The Flea Quote
kangaroosa Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 An extract from his bellhousing section. "To have a custom part like this made would be well over a $1000 US. After the favorable exchange rate of the US to AUS dollar it ended up costing me only $281 US! What a steal! " Shame its not the other way around. Quote
Super Jamie Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 that so looks like my ke25, if i didn't know any better i'd say it was the same color. it's a deluxe and everything! :P haha my wheel bearings looked the same :D super interesting about the aw11 r&p notice he's had the car with no paint or primer on it for 18 months and it's still not rusting. don't make em like they used to :) Quote
TRD ke70 Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 Another corolla saved, and what a fantastic job he's doing.he's even got his wife in on the act. don't like the transmission idea but i can understand why. Quote
Joch666 Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 (edited) He does a good job. Wonder what he charges for big cars... muahahahaha :P Edited June 26, 2005 by luxobarge Quote
rjenman Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 makes me want to try making a mold for a fiberglass hood and/or boot lid as my next project :P Quote
ancullen Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 Why stop at just the bonnet & boot lid? I'd love to get good at doing fibreglass by starting with a reasonably basic project like the bonnet, then move on to all the my other body panels. You could save a fair bit of weight, but it'd obviously take quite a while to do. Another advantage is that if you were good enough you could flare your own guards and add scoops & cooling vents and the like. Quote
rjenman Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 Mmm yeah like that insane bloody all carbon fibre WRX :P And as for custom vents and flares... mm yeah carbon fibre IS a much easier option for that sort of work as opposed to metal. My first thought about making a carbon fibre hood was the possibility of custom vents. :D as for intense custom fiberglass fabrication this was posted here a while back"custom fabrication lol Does anyone know the legalities of replacing steel panels with carbon fibre? Its dangerous in that it doesn't crumple so it ruins what progress they made in crash testing... but less important if your car is built like a submarine anyway lol.. i doubt queensland transport shares that view.. mikeys toy[RL] Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 if you guys only knew how HARD it really is.....it would take you two months to make a hood, then about two weeks for every one after Quote
Mr Revhead[RL] Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 fibre glass illegal? you poor guys I'm looking into carbon fibre for the aw11 :D helps that i knwo a guy who works with it and geton with him quite well :P Quote
ancullen Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 As it's illegal you'd make it a track-use only car. You couldn't enter improved production (as body mods are limited to a small spoiler), but for something just for tooling around in (which would be a bit of a waste of time & effort) you could make something REALLY cool. Mr Revhead[RL] Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 hell fibre glass is fine here! :D of course anything structual has to be ok'd. hell the aw11 s/c has a glass engine lid stock!. as for smash protection.... what panles offer much in the way of protection? its all in the structure behind them! demuire Posted June 27, 2005 Author Report Posted June 27, 2005 You couldn't enter improved production (as body mods are limited to a small spoiler), I don't think that's entirely true (but I don't have my CAMS manual with me so can't check it out). Other body mods (flares, front spoilers etc) are allowed, but are restricted. Quote
