bingo, i finally got round to getting a nut the matched the diameter of the gear knob thread abot got my uncle to weld it inside the pipe.

 

so now it does screw on and off. Yeah so just cut down the leg of an ironing board with a kink in it. And just jammed the gear know on the end of it.

 

if that makes sense

Haha! Inspirational! Defs gonna do it, but i wont be able to screw on/off so easily... previous owner was 'hectic' and cut the shifter lever a few inches shorter, I'm not a fan. Leverage is good!
