hey there rollaclubbers. i have been thinking about building some sort of buggy for a while now. and we have a ke70 at our disposal with a rooted body but good running gear. has anyone attempted to remove the body from the chassis on a keto before? and how hard would it be? I'm mad keen on getting stuck into this thing, and building some sort of rollcage too. if anyone can shed some light it would be awesome. cheers brendan

i guess you know that a rolla does not have a chassis,they are mono construction, so,if you cut the body of down to floor level it will basically fold in half.Only way out of this is a full welded chassis eg like a beach buggy,not the type built on a vw floor pan but the racing type with full fab chassis.

If you leave it alone from the dash forward you may be able the weld up enough bracing!Really depends where your going to cut and what you plan to leave.

and where are you going to drive it?

 

unless you access to some massive private property, places to drive non registered built contraptions do not exist.

 

i considered creating a motor bike engine powered gokart quite a few times, only to establish that there is knowwhere to drive it legally.

 

but like jimmy sais, best just to leave it all intact to keep its original rigidity. then add some roll caging if you want, make things a bit safer.

As for somewhere to drive it my parents own a 90 acre property full of contour banks and gullies. And with the body, if we cut everything out beside essentials, could a roll cage welded in keep it rigid enough?

For the amount of pipework etc that you would probably need to make it half way safe for you,you could build your self a bare buggy chassis and just add the running gear!As in the video,if you take much more than that off your just asking for trouble,might become a transformer and turn into a metal coffin for you!!

This is probably going to be a stupid question, but since all the panels are already shagged, could you cut the panels off and leave the frame on and reinforce the frame? I haven't had a real good look at it so i don't know if the panels are load bearing?

Even shagged they still contribute to ridgity,in my opinion anyway!

just srtipp it out weld the diff take out the rear springs weld in a roll bar so u don't die take out all the glass and go for it

 

Why take out the rear springs..? you'd be on bump stops or bottomed out shocks..

 

Even if you just take out the doors, eventually it'll fold up.

 

ke70's havent got the strongest chassis.. and you can't seperate it from the body anyway..

 

Only way to do it properly is slice off the body, 2x4 tube, re-inforce the chassis, Angle brace it and cage it

Get rid of anything more than what I did in the video, and expect the car to fold up like paper in no time flat.

 

It will literally bend around you, as it was mine was already splitting at the seams all over the place, and the A pillars both split from stress. :o

 

Personally, I'd leave the panels, doors and anything that could add rigidity, bin the windows, trim and basically anything else that doesn't make it run, then brace everything. Do consider a roll bar seeing as the roof has all the integrity of a coke can.

 

*protip* leave the door rubbers on, it'll rattle like a bastard and drive you nuts after a very short while.

 

Even with all the extra bracing it'll be light enough to go anywhere, just have some half decent tires on it and you're set.

 

Oh, it's not very often I'll say this at all, but in this case a weldy is your friend.

 

*ninja edit* Wear a helmet, the little bolt that holds the seatbelt in place next to your shoulder is directly in line with your head in the event of a sudden stop while traveling sideways, I have a decent dent in my helmet from exactly this, and we're talking hospital time if you try to shift that bolt with your skull. Just something to keep in mind.

my oppinion is just drive it as it is!

 

weld up the diff, make sure the tyres are good, wear a helmet and have a ball!

 

less time building, more time driving. then as things start to fall off, and interior starts to be destroyed, pull it off/out and keep on driving!
