Millaz88 Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Ok guys been looking at a cheap easy enough conversion with a decent power upgrade from the crappy 4k in my e7 Now I have been looking at cheap twin cam engines that have a reasonable spare parts market and proformance upgrades Now the g4fk which is a twin cam hyundai engine out of the excel have been around for a while and there are plenty of guys racing them around the track They don't run a dizzy and have 74kw standard so with cold air intake and decent exhaust system and 98ron fuel should bump it up a tad These motors go for around the $600 mark with 3 month warranty from wreckers Just wondering what you guys think of my idea?? Any input would be nice Not interested in 4age conversion tho guys so don't mention it lol Quote
ke70dave Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 sounds great, but can you get a RWD gearbox to bolt to it easily? Quote
Millaz88 Posted May 25, 2011 Author Report Posted May 25, 2011 I have a mate who has an engineering shop with a couple cnc machines so I would prob have to talk to him about an adapting plate or bellhousing to suit corolla gearbox Quote
altezzaclub Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 The guys who rally them will know a few tricks to make them go, and there should be some aftermarket bits to hot them up. Any car that has had a one-make racing class would be a good choice, I remember the N15 Nissan Sentras ended up with a following after they had a racing class. The gearbox would be one big problem, and the water system another. Check the sump to see where the low point is compared to the KE70 crossmember. Your mate would easily fab up engine mounts and odd bits, but you might find the geabox input shaft is too short to engage the crank or wont fit around the flywheel. How about a Mazda MX5 motor & box, they start off as RWD. Quote
Millaz88 Posted May 26, 2011 Author Report Posted May 26, 2011 I had thought of mx5 and also s2000 running gear but excels are so readily available at most wreckers just seems easyer and cost effective to me amd if it all works out easy it could be a cheap upgrade for other rolla owners Quote
the_van_can Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 great for something different, realistically your probably going to be putting in as much effort and money as putting a ca18det in. Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Do it man, be a pioneer. No one will know until its tried :y: Quote
mrduke Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 What about suzuki gti motor? Has anyone done one of these? People put 4k's in sierra's so why not some payback... Quote
smitty1 Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 The early Hyundi stuff was a variation of Mitsubishi gear. There may be a jap sigma 5 speed that would bolt to it. Cheers, Ian Quote

Cheers, Ian The G4FK was Hyundai-designed though wasn't it? The earlier Excel engines were definitely old Bitsamissing engines but the Alpha was the first one they designed themselves. Quote
Millaz88 Posted May 28, 2011 Author Report Posted May 28, 2011 From what I have read on the net the new twin cam engine it the same old block with diff pistons and a twin cam head Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 From what I have read on the net the new twin cam engine it the same old block with diff pistons and a twin cam head That's just the G4FK (twincam) being an upgrade of the G4EK (single-cam), they're still both the Alpha engine (like a 4AC and 4AFC) Quote
towe001 Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 What about suzuki gti motor? Has anyone done one of these? People put 4k's in sierra's so why not some payback... The only problem you'll have is the dizzy location, being at the back of the head. But there are ways around it. Cheap ways, expensive ways and the expensive way that you thought of as the cheaper option. Suzisport makes an right angle adapter for the dizzy. But at $400 its one of the expensive ways. Quote
Des Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 I know of a GTI motor running high compression pistons, cams and twin 45mm side drafts Webers. Its also RWD but in a race car clubman thing. Sounds fantastic and 11,000rpm is a walk in the park. Quote
Millaz88 Posted May 29, 2011 Author Report Posted May 29, 2011 Yes that's the good thing about these engines they have no dizzy only a crank angle sensor and 4 could one for each cylinder so easy upgrade to ls1 coil packs for big spark and what not Also remember reading somewhere that the 2ltr Hyundai intake bolts up but don't remember where I seen this but would be interesting to see if there was any improvement in doing this Quote
