Ok so alot has happend, Boxing day the motor came out and was chucked on an engine stand

A few days after i pulled the motor apart, wanted to know if it def did a head gasket or not. So whipped the motor apart down to block and.....

post-10684-0-47912500-1357359322_thumb.jpg

Hmmmmm yeah i sure did blow it :P ahahah

So a gasket kit was a must!! Water pump was not to bad but will be replaced as ive got it apart so why not, Clutch was ok but same thing while its out might as well hahah

After a close inspection and a chat to a mate we found some slight holes in the block itself around where the gasket ring goes, prob why it blew the gasket. So should be able to fill with some metal fill and get away with that i think, also the head is still good so will just clean and give it a port match for the webbers ;)

While the block is on a stand i will also pull the crank and pistons out to give the block a good clean! Make sure everything is spotless for when i put it back together :)

Also dad found a cam in the shed for it ;) it is marked with 609 on the rear??? Does anyone know what that means??

Hopefully the Motor will be back together and running soon :D Updates to come

See ya

Jimi

Ok so ive done some more research and found some cool shit out, my cam has diff specs as to the camtech ones. My cam is actually bigger then that lol...

I did some measurements myself to figure out how much more lift I'm getting

post-10684-0-82715300-1357816553_thumb.gif....

Standard cam..

Base circle+Lobe lift - Base Circle

Exhaust- 36.34-30.52= 5.82mm

Intake - 36.50-30.90=5.6mm

609 cam....

Exhaust- 34.02-21.96=12.06mm

Intake- 33.26-21.02=12.24mm

So that means I'm getting and extra 7mm lift!!!! Thats huge plus also my base circle is also bigger which means it is open for longer. The duration is also diff which will help ;)

I have a spec sheet here.....

post-10684-0-45756100-1357816964_thumb.jpg

So this cam is going to be huge!!! Should give me a nice lump at idle with the webbers ;)

I also got another head of a mate, He said it had double valve springs and was just collecting dust. So i jumped onto it and got it for a steal :D

post-10684-0-41296500-1357817197_thumb.jpg

Has been sitting outside for a little but is not that bad, it also has already been ported abit :P It was on a 5k block with a turbo, he tried to run 25psi then blew it up lol Turns out he blew a hole in the piston so it was to be stripped and inspected for cracks etc....

So dad got a valve compressing tool so we could pull the valves out of the standard head and my new one :P So i have never removed valves from a head so dad showed me how to do the first one and i was off ;) Pulled all the valves out and bagged and tagged each valve and then put each head in diff boxes :)

post-10684-0-23389400-1357819070_thumb.jpg

So i had a good look over the new head and its not looking so good :/ There must have been some water in the head at some stage while sitting around...

The seats look a bit far gone but they might be able to be cleaned up??? Idk might get it blasted and pressure tested just to make sure, also the head is alot thinner then the standard head so it has had some work done to it sometime ago...

post-10684-0-65235900-1357819118_thumb.jpg

Here is a pic of the seat in the standard head looks much cleaner and not rusted :P

post-10684-0-81281200-1357819150_thumb.jpg

Here is what i really wanted off the head :D The double valve springs :P

post-10684-0-75880900-1357819129_thumb.jpg

This should help when i rev it now :D

Also got the metal filler out and filled some of the holes in the block, will let it set over night and give it a sand tomoz. If it still needs some will just add another layer till I'm happy :)

post-10684-0-29397700-1357819139_thumb.jpg

Also my gasket kit arrived, water pump to come and a new heavy duty clutch is on its way as well :D

Just need to send flywheel out to get machined and get it lightened ;)

More updates to come....

See ya

Sorry mate, but are you sure about those cam specs? That works out to be 18mm lift at the valve, which is a hell of a lot. You'd want to be doubly sure you're not going to bind your valve springs or hit the tops of pistons with that cam if you've measured it correctly.

Also, for a khana and rally car you do want some torque, I'd be worried that if the cam is that big, you're not going to have any until a fair way up your rev range. You'll want a very numerically high diff.

Hahahhaah maybe i did measure it wrong or add it wrong lol idk even so that a huge amount :P

Hahhaa na trust me ive been told this cam will be fine and will give me what i want!! Plus the webbers will make it sound so SWEET!!!!! Na 4:1's FTW!!!! Hahaha

Ill just drive it and then see if i need to change ratios and all that jazz, dad said it can't cost more then $500 when i get stuff ;) So some homemade stuff and good knowledge will be needed ;)

I'd back that up. You want drivability not big power at high revs. Big cam plus webbers will mean nothing until the cam and carbs start working together, then it will be wheel spinning, while someone with a more drivable combination will be disappearing up the road.

Trust me, been there done that with KE20's. My less modded 5k would run away and hide from our big cammed, high comp 4k cause you could use what it had. The 4k would be waiting for it to come onto its cam, waiting, waiting, oh shit I'm facing the wrong way.

Slow down a bit... make sure the cam will not coil-bind the springs.

I think 0.41 was the max lift Crow said before you need non-standard springs, and you have 0.443. That's one reason I bought the 606 grind.

I don't expect any of the K springs to handle it, they usually talk about Holden 202 springs for it.

While the block is on a stand i will also pull the crank and pistons out to give the block a good clean!

Get it balanced with the lightened flywheel if the pistons are out, it will rev much better.

Are the front struts carrying inserts or still original wet struts? If they are inserts they are proably road ones, so they pull the car down and hold it down. If they are wet ones you can change the valving so the car lifts up easily, which is what you want for rallying. Stiffen the down valves and soften the up ones.

When you weld the diff don't weld the teeth to each other. Fill a tooth space in each spider with weld. The next thing will be hunting for a 4.6 or a 4.9 diff I suppose.

We ran lots of camber and Steve loved it, the car turned in for once in its life. We also removed both sway bars, front and rear, and will try them once the car is running sweet. Without them it has a lot more bite.

Might be some ideas in here-

Well alot has happend since last :P Pulled the motor right down, gave the bores a clean up and then chucked some new rings and bearings through it :P

Pistons are in and the motor turns over nice, the cam is in and waiting to get dialed in.

I have been playing with head atm like porting, so i practiced on a old head to get the feel of how soft the heads are and to see what the air grinder did :P A work mate was over my shoulder making sure i was doing it right, the idea is to match the port to the webber manifold so then we ram force the air in :D Old skool trick and should give me some extra kick ;)

So I'm doing the head ill be using atm and its going good :D Just need to do a little more and clean it up but smooth it also

The engine is coming along good, dad did the oil pump mod that we found on here and I'm looking at getting the sump baffled this weekend so i don't have to worry about that side of it ;)

The flywheel has been sent of and is getting lightened and machined :D Clutch will be here soon.

I have almost all the parts so i can put the motor back in :D Then alot of work to make it run and all neat..

More updates and pics to come :D

See ya
