    Noobs

I don't think this is a terrible idea. There is a lot of information out there and it can be a little bit of an overload. Even if you have an idea of what you want to do, sometimes it can be hard to find the specific details etc (I have had issues in the past using the search function on various forums and sometimes what a google search brings back is just a little too vague). When I first got my 86 a couple of years ago I did a little searching around the interwebz and found a guide that someone had written for new 86 owners. It essentially went through the various components of the car (engine, suspension etc), some initial things you should take a look at (known issues etc) and some potential direction for changes (eg saying things like "it's best to mod/change this straight away, but don't worry about X until you have done an engine conversion"). With that in mind it might be worth making up a guide for new KE owners, putting in the answers or links to some of the common (and often stupid questions). This could be as simple as something like: Engine - The stock KE engine can be considered quite slow, this can be fine for a daily but most enthusiasts crave more power, here are some links to discussions about the common engine conversions: Leaving the engine stock (as discussion on why you shouldn't bother) Working the 4k 4K Turbo 5k Conversion 4AGE (1.6l) Conversion 13B (rotary) Conversion Holden V6 Conversion V12 Jet Engine conversion There already exists the FAQ/Wiki containing information and links to working a 4k, but this could be daunting to newbies, so creating something targeted towards could help answer their questions quicker and more efficiently and mean less questions for more experienced forum members. A lot of forums though often have people who can be slightly elitist and, while they are willing to provide their opinion experience etc, they are often unwilling to do so to the n00bs or anyone who has less experience/knowledge than them (which defeats the purpose). There seems to be this opinion that if you want the information you should really have to work hard and scour the internet for it. While I believe that we can't provide all the information inexperienced people will need (and they should also do their own research), we can (as a community) at least provide a decent starting point (so that people will be able to quickly determine that fitting a 5liter V8 engine into a KE35 isn't a simple bolt in job).
  2. I know some of the dudes are going along with the Canberra Celica Group. I'm hoping to have gotten off my ass and fixed my 7K KE55 and bring it along.
  3. I saw him at the servo (while in a KE70 on the way to look at more KE70s). We ended up having a little 70 party with all the colours of the rainbow!!
  4. So J Riftin and I set out to do a bit of work on the 70 over the weekend. We got a bit done. A fair bit of time was spent screwing around trying to fit the hardlines for the handbrake and clutch. Currently two of the trumpets are fitted (as we wanted to leave some room at the back to play with wiring etc). The gearbox spacer is in, giving a little more clearance between the firewall and back of the engine, though not quite as much as we were hoping. We decided not to bother connecting up the heater. Hydraulic handbrake is bolted in. Throttle cable is hooked up. Fuel lines connected in the engine bay (started looking a surge tank to mount in the boot). I've updated the list above with the tasks complete. Couple of pics of the installation of the trumpets. The trumpets are 43mm and were purchased from SamQ. I've heard that these air filters (http://www.pipercross.net/competition/products_socks.asp) are probably the best for something that won't restrict the airflow too much. Otherwise I will probably run it without filters (as it will be a track car not driven on the road/dirt).
  5. Confirmed. There will also be a Motorkhana on the 30th of October. And the 26th/27th is the Matsuri 2 day drift event at Wakefield.
  6. Not much has happened recently on the 70, as I've been away for work and J Riftin and I have been participating in some of the local events (Celica Club Cruise and MG Car Club Motorkhana). I recently found out though that a 2 day drift Matsuri is being held at Wakefield raceway at the end of November, and was so excited that I have signed up. This means that we now have just over 2 months to get the car drift ready! For this to happen though we still have a bit to do: TO FIT: Gearbox x/member spacer (Sam Q) Add gearbox oil Change Diff oil Attach water lines to heater core Velocity Stacks (Sam Q) Fit Extractors Install Drive Shaft Install fuel pump, lines, pickup etc... Re-install/fabricate dash instruments Push button (for start) Hydraulic handbrake and modify lines Bonnet pins Seats and belts Fire extinguisher (need to purchase) Radiator (need to determine which to use and how to modify, ie AE86, AE71 etc) Fit Rear AJPS Springs and shocks Engine Service (oil, filters, Alt belt) Tighten Clutch master cylinder Attach Clutch hardlines Decide on wheels, purchase tyres Coilovers Making/fit: Exhaust system Modified hydro brake lines Tune of ECU (as it might be lean once the velocity stacks are fitted) Paint bonnet (Black) Weld diff Need to test the following: All wiring (and that engine starts etc) Appropriate lights work Brakes (especially rears as the state of the drum brakes are unknown) Steering works (as some of the parts were from the 86) If by some miracle we manage to get all that done and we have lots of time left, we can look at some of the optional cosmetic stuff: Stickers!!!11!! (Need a custom "SLOTH" across the car somewhere and probably the number 70 on the doors) Drift-spec bumper Looks like we have our work cut out for us....
  7. A couple of weeks ago I was down visiting the old girl and SlothSnr and I got it started again. The car had been sitting neglected for just over a year (had been busy with my old 86). We changed the oil, sprayed in some Start Ya Bastard, jumped the battery and she started! The engine was making a terrible noise (which I had heard once before, just before a rod slipped out from under a rocker) but I planned to take a look at that after I got it shipped up to Canberra. A couple of days before it was to be shipped I got someone in Melbourne to start it, with no success. After replacing the battery though it started without any problems. The car carrying company then picked it up and dropped it on a truck. A couple of nights later I met the truckie on the side of the road at midnight to pick up the car. When he tried to start it though it just wouldn't start. I applied some manual choke to the twin carbies and after a couple more tries it started... but sounded like it was about to explode. After idling for a little it was doing a bit better, but still sounding as rough as guts. We took it off the truck and I braved the <1km drive back to the house. Putting my foot down the car barely moved. The thing sounded like a helicopter! The brakes also barely worked (but without the ability to get much speed that wasn't an issue). The next night I opened up the rocker cover to discover that once again the rod had slipped out... the same one as before! I believe this is because the valve/spring is getting stuck and not opening all the way, meaning there isn't enough pressure on the rocker to hold in the rod.
  8. Got any pics of the rims john? I have a pair of 15s, would like like something that is a close match.

  10. Hopefully at around midnight tonight there will be another KE in Canberra..... Though it's not running extremely well :bash: and looks quite terrible at the moment :fuzz:
  11. There's a SDMA hillclimb on the 25th I believe. You could always look at 180sx's, they are fairly cheap. I've always wanted an Evo.... maybe when I'm rich.
  12. Some of the parts for the conversion (xmembers, pedalboxes etc) are starting to get really hard to find and really expensive, everyone seems to be doing 4A conversions at the moment (I seriously think I have seen new person doing one every 2-3 weeks on rolla club). I'd definitely go with the option of a half finished project, you will save some money and can get a lot of the hard work done (saving lots of time).
  13. Yeah, I'm usually keen to meet up as long as it's not too much effort and I'm not too busy. The next couple of weeks are pretty packed (CCG Cruise, Motorkhana, Khanacross, working on 55 & 70), but it's probably best if people just start organising stuff.
  14. There's a CCG cruise on this weekend, if you wanted to meet some local car enthusiasts might be worth a look. The CCG guys are pretty good. http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/act-events/69749-ccg-coast-cruise.html
  15. The holes in the hat are actually for a specialised tool... no idea where you would get one though.
  16. You'll also need a pedal box (another thing that's always overcharged).
  17. A friend has an aluminium ebay radiator in his AE86 and said he had no problems with it. Thanks for posting up that link, I've been looking for a radiator for the Silvertop in my KE70 and all the previous ones on ebay were super expensive... might give this a try, if I do I'll try to remember to post back.
  18. I had a K50 on my worked 7k in my k355 (though it only made 56rwkw) and never snapped anything. I believe mines got a 3k sump.
  19. If you search around peoples build threads etc you'll probably find one, but most likely it will be modified in some way (velocity stack etc). The figures quoted by Toyota are usually a little... generious. My RWD silvertop made 68RWKW when it was in my 86... so you'd hope for something between that and the qouted 121KW

I would offer to take you... but my KE70 track car is almost finished, and we'll probably be working on that (should also do an oil change on the Integra before the Motorkhana).
  21. This one won't be going on the road unfortuntely... just the track

I'm still in Melb this weekend :( And I have a feeling there will be a little bit of work happening over the next couple of weekends on my cars ;)

In the more immediate future: 11th September MGCCC Motorkhana (couple of Rollaclub members will be out there having fun). 18th September (I think) Khanacross I'm keen for a coast drive at some point.
  24. Nice car Aladdin, I'm assuming from the tape on the headlights that you do some form of motorsport?
