  1. I forgot all about picking up the castor bushes from Fulcrum, they delivered some gear to work today & they were kind enough to drop them off as well. I'll get photos tomorrow, but the standard rear bush for the front control arms has the bolt hole in the centre of it, in these the hole is offset, giving slightly more castor. Probably better for the people with power-steering but *meh* I'll live. When I get the time, going to swap the Main Jets in the carbs as well, these 185-ish jets are just too big, will put the 160's in & see how things go. Managed to track down a replacement idle adjustment cable so that I can finish getting the carbs in sync.
  2. The next motorkhana event is on Saturday the 12th of April (Link to 2014 Calender: https://drive.google...dit?usp=sharing) at the TCCAV Grounds, 31-67 McGrath Road in Werribee. I don't have the Entry Forms/Supp Regs with me just yet, but it starts at 12pm with a Come & Try Day which is FREE to enter for those who haven't done motorkhana before & the twilight motorkhana event starts at 5pm. Just need $25 for a temporary CAMS licence if you don't have a full one. Provisional Results from yesterdays Theo Wintels Memorial Trophy - NGK VMC Round 2 are in & I'm pretty damn happy. Not just because Blue Thing didn't blow up either. I finished 16th out of 45 Outright, 14th on Handicap & 5th out of 19 in Class A. Courtesy of an awesome photographer guy who was out there yesterday, got a couple of action shots. :) Along with a few other club members. Batch didn't have a great day, it was all going well... ...until the tail-shaft let go after the third test. Also, bonus BT External footage, doing Oh What A Feeling for the first time.

WMMH - Getting eye-balled at the traffic lights by an SS Commodore (with Chev badges) full of flat-cappers, then watching them take off as if the Devil himself was after them & nearly lose control cutting someone else off getting onto a freeway on-ramp. This doesn't make me happy, but driving along the freeway to see said Commodore pulled over by the Highway Patrol does. :yes:
  4. In other good news, haven't seen any oil smoke since yesterdays tuning efforts. Plenty of dust though. Loving the dust, all of the dust!
  5. Today went well, only had one minor drama, after Test #10 I parked at the next test area, got out & heard a hissing noise. Cue rapid swapping back to my road wheels/tyres on the front for the last two tests. Looks like some dirt/rocks have gotten jammed in the tyre bead on the front-drivers wheel, most likely due to sidewall flex from running 25psi in the tyres, being sideways & some potholes. At least it didn't come off the rim like some other unlucky souls. For the full video playlist starting from the first test, click the link below. Please note the lack of fuel pump noise. :D
  6. My ears have no clue what is meant to sound good & what is bad, nor what effect turning the screws have exactly. Thus, gauges. :P For example, I thought the burble was a good thing...nope, that was carbs out of sync. :( Fuel figures are getting better, so close to that elusive single-figure mark! Though the throttle feels SSOOOO much better, hauls arse on an on-ramp too. :yes:

  8. A massive thankyou goes to EvanG for the use of the carb-synch gauge-set. He was right about the 'burble' noise when the throttle is just opened too, so out of synch! The bad news is that I snapped my idle control cable, so things are as good as they can get at the moment. Things sound better too, though number 3 still needs some love, cable ties/clamps on the hoses made no change to the flickering. :(
  9. Feeling a little more optimistic about all of this! Cylinders 1 - 4 from top left, Cylinder 1 is the only 'moist' cylinder now (though it's looking better), the other 3 are looking okay. Going to lean out it's idle mixture screw & see how things go. Thinking I need to go smaller main jets, test-drive will confirm. Yay for data-logging! The shiny bits you see on the intake valve side of the number 3 piston aren't marks from contact with the valves, just carbon-free shiny bits. Checked out the valves with the mirror attachment & they look okay. Spark plug inspection Round 2, things are looking better. Cylinders 1 - 4 from left to right.
  10. From top left, cylinders 1 - 4. From what I can tell with the inspection camera, there is still evidence of cross-hatching on all the bores & no broken metal bits. That fluid on top of the pistons you see, is mainly petrol, with a little oil. Cylinders 3 & 4 look healthy, 1 & 2 not so much. Am going to lean out those carbs a touch & see how things go. On a side note, changed my driving style to load up the (chrome, not cast) piston rings a little more & the smoke production has reduced. Update again: Leaned out the idle mixtures on carbs 1 & 2, total air:fuel ratios leaned out 1.0 at idle & 0.5 at full noise. Also dropped the fuel pressure from 2.0psi to 0.5psi, the exhaust now smells less like an oil fire & more like burnt petrol! My 185 main jets may have to go though, will try the 160's instead & see how things go now a few bugs have been ironed out of the fuel system setup.   11. Not sure quite how to word this update, so I'm just going to wing it. The hope that nothing is terminally wrong is getting stronger. Topped up the oil on Monday night & drove BT to work on Tuesday. Started first crank (on a cool morning too), idled fine, drove as per usual. Had a chat with several people wise to the ways of 4A-G's, including an hour-plus long phone call to kickn5k (Stu, love you long time man!) & it was on my way to borrow an inspection camera that I began to notice a few things about when & how the oil smoke was appearing. So here's my thoughts: Air:fuel mixtures are seriously rich at part-throttle (you know, sitting on 60km/h, 100km/h etc, that much throttle), which is where I do spend the majority of my time driving at, 13.0:1 (air:fuel) at best, 11.8:1 at worst. When coasting down a hill with no throttle applied, I saw 10.5:1 at worst. It is when I apply throttle after the engine has been running for a short period of time at these ratios that the smoke appears in volume. Rich mixtures will wash oil off the bores/burn it off, as well as dilute the oil, reducing the viscosity, As I was running a 10w-40 oil, it didn't take much for the oil to be able to seep past the rings into the combustion chamber & be burnt off. The used oil reeks of petrol. Going to do my best to lean the part-throttle mixture out & while I haven't yet had a look inside the bores to check for any glazing of the bores, it is next on the list of things to do. I have also changed to a Penrite HPR 50 oil, slightly thicker, the smoke clouds still appear as per the above circumstances, but less of it. I'm also taking the opportunity to 'load up' the rings as much as possible, so lots of throttle but keeping under 3,500rpm. Have been finding a few hills on my travels & putting them to good use. This is because I was enlightened that the chrome piston rings I'm using (instead of cast rings) take a wee bit more/are a little more finicky to bed in. BTs only done ~1,700kms at this point, so it's possible that they haven't yet bedded in properly yet, the fuel soaked oil/rich mixtures most likely wouldn't have helped them either. For the spark-plug-reading gurus, a photo of the spark plugs that are ~1,000kms old, cylinders 1 - 4 from left to right. 3 & 4 look okay (relatively), it's 1 & 2 that have me a little concerned. Enough of my rambling though, I've had bugger all sleep the last few days so I'm going to go pass out. The inspection camera will tell me more tomorrow. P.S - Finally got the T3 injector port plugs in the mail & installed them, very happy with the quality of the product.

  13. Found the culprit responsible for my persistent fuel leak, leaking from the seam where it's pressed together. Throw in bin, replace with new one, triple-check for leaks & contemplate filter-type change. Even with the leak, fuel economy figures are getting better. I slept in, but still made Cars, Coffee & Donuts...just. The bad news is, burning oil. Lots of it, as in, I filled two lanes of the Citylink tunnel with smoke when I gave it a bit of a free-rev for the sound. :(

  15. I have had my C56 gearbox bolted successfully to both a 2A-C & a 4A-GE 16v BP engine, so I believe the answer to your question is yes, they do fit.

That awesome moment when after replacing the fuel pump, testing the switched 12v supply, testing the LPG trigger relay & relocating the pumps earth point twice, I find the pumps positive wire had worked loose from where I had connected it to the supply wire. Didn't crimp the spade connectors, basically, the problem wasn't pump failure, it was my mistake with the wiring. On the bright side, the new mounts make it very quiet & I have a spare pump. Fuel pressure's a steady 2psi & she's running a touch leaner too, should help the fuel economy figures. Having the return line seemed to make it easier to adjust the pressure too.
  17. Replacement fuel pump dummy-mounted for photo, now mounted permanently with thicker rubber mounts. A.K.A old sway-bar bushes. Remember that injector port plug that went MIA at Calder Park? It didn't go far after all... While retrieving a dropped nut re-configuring the fuel system, guess what I found on top of the steering rack? These are also in my plans.

  19. I presume Kevin Dennis Holden/Hyundai etc & Harrop Racing are sponsors of Calder Park, so they have the right & left (respectively) lanes named after them. The fuel pump died on me in peak hour traffic yesterday afternoon, loved it, really...... Thanks to a fellow TCCAV member/blindkidseeks I was hooked up with overnight parts in the form of a new fuel pump. Discussion on Facebook has lead me to re-connect a fuel return line & also to mount the pump on thicker rubber bushes. Hopefully it lasts longer than the original.
  20. Removing the drivers seat makes things 'easier', but you're right, getting in is one thing.....my spine hated me Tuesday morning. I still don't know how to convert the O2 wideband logs to video, but in the meantime, things are looking pretty healthy.
  21. It's like a disease, but.....good. No, I'm not going back to EFI, especially not after cutting the fuel rail in half. Just a temporary measure until the proper plugs arrive. My kind of clearance, much better now. Had to cannibalize the Toyota item for the push-rod, the Honda item was slightly shorter & meant that the pedal was almost to the floor just to hook it up, even at maximum length adjustment. Swapping these is easier when they are both out of the car, not when in the car, just as a heads up... Basically cuddling the steering-wheel but upside-down is the only position I could access things.
  22. Evolution, not revolution. Not much has changed visually over 9 years. This is also the same car that I said I'd NEVER modify. :rolls: Blue Thing is becoming a bit of a hybrid beast, input from Toyota, Yamaha, Kawasaki & now Honda. If it doesn't fit, make it fit. The two bolts holding the Civic clutch-master to the firewall were spaced slightly further apart, so out with the hand-file... The rubber seal over the piston/bore was a tight squeeze through the hole in the firewall, but it made it through. Slight adjustments needed to the clutch pedal position & some alterations to the Civic's clutch line are needed, but it all fits relatively easily.
  23. Thankyou Sir, you're right, the rush you get from pushing your car as fast as it can go is the fun part. Knowing that you built it & it didn't blow up when most likely to is a massive bonus. :yes: DPB ran a faster time than me in his EFI 16v BP powered Orange xE7x, so I'm aiming for mid 15's now. I still want the Gulf colours, there's a TCCAV Drag-Racing Day coming up soon, stay tuned. Also, made some edits to the videos/photos so they match up. *facepalm*
