  1. Interesting engines often have a heap of issues with parts availability and lack of performance options though. In soemthign you are looking to "race" having something with decent parts availability is a mass consideration (well, should be if you are wise enough) Theres definitely some interesting old pommy alloy V8s around the place, 1UZFE would keep it in the family, but I doubt you'd ever fit the thing in the engine bay (the quad cam heads are a pain in the butt) If you wanted to be REALLY interesting, an early pinto motor (the type that the escort club cars are running) are easy to find (would need to import though) and there are a shitload of off the shelf bits for them in the states.... wouldnt be another one like it here.

  3. You obviously haven't had much to do with the court system and traffic infringements then..... MANY people take offences to court to get off (I've had police, legal reps and even a few court staff to chat to about it...). I know of numerous people who have simply elected to take their fines to court, knowingly guilty, due to loop holes and other areas that they knew would either get their offence wiped, or atleast garner a reduced penalty. (one point for 6 months because you need to get to work, or maybe attend some seminars and not have anything on your record etc) and yes, in cases where there is no law stating a minimum penalty (e.g. Skyes law in NSW that mandates a 5 year prison term for those who run from police) it is entirely at the judges discretion to hand down a sentence they think is fitting (given the evidence provided by both sides on the day) I'm going to leave it at that respone and stop chalking up the GMGs going on, you've got an opinion of the system from your day in court, I've got mine..... WGMG: Hashtags.... coming soon to facebook.... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323393304578360651345373308.html Hipsters will be rejoicing
  4. So wait, when you lose your licence in QLD, they actually cancel your licence? not just suspend it? In NSW, when you lose your licence as long as you keep it current during the period (not expired) then when the suspension is lifted (once you read the end of the period) you can just start driving again. (well its atleast that way for points and even immediate loss of licence traffic infringements.... been there done that...)
  5. So you take exception to one sentence that on its own has a completely different context..... This bit here- They see that a percentage of their costs come from judges, security, admin staff etc etc processing cases where the defendant has pleaded guilty to charges (which if it was all charges, would be people aiming to get a lesser penalty or some leniency in their sentencing, like not losing their licence, one point program, drivers ed etc) And they decide that those people using the courts to their advantage should have to pay. So you get the follow on to people who arent there doing that (like yourself) If I do the wrong thing (speeding, dangerous driving etc) and get caught, cop gives me a fine for what I've done, turns out it means I'm going to lose my licence, so I go to court, knowingly guilty, but hoping for a reduced sentence... even though Ive done the wrong thing, knowing the penalties and knowing how they could affect me.... (which is an entirely different subject, realistically, if you are guilty, you cop the sentence, other circumstances like getting to work etc shouldnt count, do the crime, suffer the penalty. if you are too stupid to realise the impact on your life, thats your own fault) THOSE PEOPLE should have to pay for wasting the courts time. Pull your head out of your bum and reread what you are replying to, there is NOWHERE in there that I imply people should be charged money if they are innocent. I do however say that people who go to court to please GUILTY (and this is in relation to driving offences) for the sole purpose of getting leniency or some sort of altered penalty to the one they got handed, should definitely be charged a fee. Why should they expect to be treated differently to anyone else that gets done for the same offence (if they are GUILTY) No where did I say that you should have been charged the fee.... far out, high horsie be gone. and FYI, I'm not a party lines voter, I'm someone who actually looks at the state of the party and their policies and goes from there..... Blaming the premier for something that is infact a more grass roots inception is pure political BS and infantile.
  6. I think you're misdirecting your hatred... The bloke didnt sit there and say "how can I make money from the courts" There would have been a group of people, working in that department, being told they needed to break even to cover the costs of their overstaffed departments, too many privledges and whatever else floats their boat. Those knob heads then go into overdrive to figure out where their staffs time goes. They see that a percentage of their costs come from judges, security, admin staff etc etc processing cases where the defendant has pleaded guilty to charges (which if it was all charges, would be people aiming to get a lesser penalty or some leniency in their sentencing, like not losing their licence, one point program, drivers ed etc) And they decide that those people using the courts to their advantage should have to pay. So you get the follow on to people who arent there doing that (like yourself) realistically though, it isnt a terrible idea, if you choose to take an offence to court, knowingly guilty then you should have to pay for the use of the system to get a lesser penalty. Anyway, back to the original point, those people coming up with the ideas arent of any political party, they are the guys sitting in departmental positions, that report to the other guys, that then give briefings to the ministers, that then go to the premier with their plans to save money.... regardless of who is in power, the plebs that come up with these plans are all the same and they still happen....
  7. Its nuts how much more viable modifying the ls2 onwards is over the LS1 (and thats saying somethign given how easy it is to make power with an LS1) Extractors, OTR, custom exhaust (its what we do lol) and a tune by sams performance netted 277kw at the wheels and a mid 12 second quater in my brthers VE SS. anything over 200rwkw in a commodore ute would be good fun though, they slide around enough with just a six pot driving the thing! haha.
  8. The other issue with acrylic windows is how it breaks (or doesnt completely) Glass tends to shatter and turn into smaller pieces, where as acrylic, when it breaks, turns into nice long pointy shards that are perfect at getting all that dam red stuff out of your fleshbag.
  9. N/A alloy V8 is going to be your best friend I would think. Lighter, no lag, simpler... If I was building a track only car, id be recessing the firewall, setting the engine as low and as far back as possible in the engine bay and going from there.... As much as I love 2Js, they weigh a shitload and with the added height and length, they would defniitely decrease the handling dynamics.
  10. You can buy the bundy tube from repco/bursons (not sure about supercrap) Cheap flare tools are shitty, middle of the range price wise work fine though, I haven't found the need to spend a fortune on a snapon one yet (and I've made a shitload of brake lines) Best advice I can give is to remember to put the flar nuts on BEFORE you flare the pipe. Invest in a pipe cutter (small clamp ontool with a cutting wheel, you simply tighten, then roll around the outside of the pipe, tighten again roll and you have a straight cut.) And always leave a good inch or three past where the end of the line will be, while bending you tend to take from that end. Leaving spare means you wont come up short (same for when you do the flare, it takes a couple cm of pipe length sometimes.) Always remember that when you first install the line, you will need to do it up tight as a nuns nasty, then undo, do up once or twice more and then final tighten. Usually the flare tool leaves a bit of an uneven surface (after all, it is crushing it into shape) Doing it up a couple of times helps the male-femal parts work into a groove and seal up properly.
  11. Clear indicator tails look heaps cleaner (on your old one)
  12. Still undecided whether I'd buy a whole kit from MB or custom make one to suit what I want (and use the landcruiser arms/geometry) thats a while down the list though, LS1 conversion is first :D If you are ever looking at buying wheels again (especially something that is widely available in the states) give me a yell. Summit and Jeggs are cheap as shit for that sort of thing (tirerack for tyres) and I have a guy in Cali that does awesome deals on shipping to Melb.
  13. I have no idea how he drives that thing so low. haha. especially round western sydney
  14. If I go that way, it will have a full custom rear clip, so the chassis rails wont be a problem lol. Its stupid though, the airbag idea originally came from getting the dog in and out fo the back of the ute as she gets older. lol. Thats pretty cheap for new wheels and tyres these days
  15. haha, I've been looking at some wheels from the states (3 piece billet) but just havent come up with the coin yet (weddings do that) But atleast you have some tray width to play with, I'm contemplating pumping the rear guards slightly on the ute to fit a fatter tyre, But,. that all becomes null and void if I fit a landcruiser 4 link and bags like I plan... lol
  16. Thats cheaper than I thought. wow.
  17. Congrats on the bub! If you don't mind me asking, how much did the custom bar set you back?
  18. We were looking at Lexan products (long story short, it had to be essentially bullet proof, was for the roof of a high lift container fork, while it had bars accross the roof portal, there was the possibility something may fall between them, from 8 containers high and smash the driver in the face..) Found the same thing though, after keeping samples in the weather for an extended period of time (big forklifts don't exactly get shedded down on the docks) their clarity degraded to levels that were unacceptable for our situation (or for any situation where you need to see clearly through the product. I can't say I'd be keen to go "plastic" windows on a street car (unless I had the $$ + time to replace 12 monthly) with some patience, a decent cage builder could easily build you a functional cage that would be fine for daily driving (and hidden enough not to attract the wrong attention. I think the issue with 90% of peoples cages is that they are built off a jig and built to be easily installed (bolt or weld) I'm just about to do a cage on an MR2 which is going to be fun given the space restrictions and the cams regs on angles etc.
  19. TRUCK YEAH! Convos are a tough looking wheel on any fullsize early holden :)
  20. The other thing I've run into trouble with is UV stability of any sort of "plastic" windows. We were trialling a heap of variants for applications on industrial forklifts and none were anywhere near UV/weather stable enough for long term use. What are you planning to do with the 86 once your finished? I'm guessing road registered and regular driving as per your other builds?
  21. PM me 4AGE conversion bits price ;)
  22. the slag looks more like MIG than braze/solder etc But definitely looks like drain pipe sections
  23. Paint it something less standout, lose the wing and body kit, (fix that horrendous interior) and the concept isnt too bad, reminds me of the Kombi ute things, could be a cool thing, just been horribly riced out.
  24. Grab some expanding foam (or some epoxy resin), V out the cracks in the dash, fill, bog, file, paint OR trim it :) Those wheels are bloody bright! straight red tinter? Needs some rusty steelies to go with the roofracks :D
  25. Suspension component failure during a hard launch/wheelstand I'd say?
