Trev Posted January 14, 2012 Report Posted January 14, 2012 I honestly laughed at this, and would laugh at them in person. There's road rules, follow them. I know, people really don't understand what it is like to be on a bike until they are on one, you also soon learn when you come off. Quote
Tume Posted January 14, 2012 Report Posted January 14, 2012 WGMG: Trying to wire up a new headunit on an import using plug n play because I don't want to hack up the wiring. All the plugs that are just close to it are always off by the shape of one pin or 2. -.- Eh I'll do it later when I become in need of music. Quote
ke70dave Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Automatic transmissions, namely my complete lack of understanding and ability to do anything with them. My girlfriends brother and wife have a 96 nissan pulsar, completely not mechanically minded, but pretty switched on (doing medicine at uni). ~8 weeks ago the auto transmission packed it up. sort of just reved up and down, no drive in any of the gears. 2 options: 1: rebuild auto, ~$2000 including labour 2: get 2nd hand from wreckers, ~$1000 including labour (gbox was $500 i think) keep in mind a 96 bsae model (GXi?)pulsar is worth maybe 4-5k? They are very strapped for cash (wife's wage, he's at uni full time doing medicine) so went with option 2, on sort of my recomendation but with no responsibility attached, i figured they can't be unlucky and get a dud one right? car has only done 160k's i think. saturday just gone, the automatic transmission packed it up again. when i got to it, it was low on oil (very low...but still registering on the gearstick at least) which can be attributed to a leak i found just after they got the replacement done, which they did nothing about of course....no drive in any of the gears, wouldnt let me go into "p" with engine on, horrible noise came out of it. and it didnt really load up the engine when you engaged "D" at a standstill, just sort of did nothing. Now this was on the side of the road where it packed it up. there was about 5 of us standing around, me being the only tech savy person there. And i had absolutely no idea what to do with the automatic gearbox. we added a bit of oil, didnt change anythign what so ever. how does it work? seems you can't make the car do ANYTHING with a stuffed auto. at least if you break a gear in a manual, you can get home in one of the other gears (at the expense of the clutch....). and if you break a clutch you can get the car home, at the expense of the starter motor.... stupid autos. Evan G Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Did you replace the torque converter? Quote
ke70dave Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 dunno.... good question though. Quote
Evan G Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 also did you bolt the tc to the flex plate or insert it in the trans first? Quote
ke70dave Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 well i didnt do any work at all they paid a shop to do it. some transmission shop down at capalaba, needed the car back ASAP. Quote
drkbrth Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 Automatic transmissions I have diagnosed your problem, sir. Quote
love ke70 Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 sounds like torque convertor providing no drive, but i know about as much about autos as you. i had one doing that, the more oil you put in the better it went. did you check oil level running or with engine off, should be checked with engine running, car in drive(?) someone chime in here... Quote
ke70dave Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 wow really? i checked it with engine off...... but i filled it up above the fill line...(just) it went to the shop today.....will hear the story tonight hopefully... Quote
Ke slider Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 engine on , in Park or N, so the touque converter is full, also might not of jsut been torque converter, may have been, bands also Quote
Trev Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 and if you break a clutch you can get the car home, at the expense of the starter motor.... How? The starter is driven onto the flywheel which the clutch engages on, if the clutch is stuffed then the started won't matter. I bet that the radiator or trans cooler was never replaced with the auto change, when n auto shits itself it normally sends filing all the way through the oil passages (radiator and or oil cooler), if you replace the auto and none of the other components then you risk contamination. And don't forget that a lot of the internal components are submerged in the fluid so any servo's or pistons will get metal contamination. 1 Quote
