JiP Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 Hey guys, i hope you can help me. I'm having issues with my 5k. Lately i've been constantly stopping oil leaks. On the weekend we took apart the head and replaced the head gasket. Now it still leaks under the rocker cover. Its got a new seal but still leaks. I spoke to someone today and i told them how my catch can has never filled up. They think my PVC value is blocked. Anyone else agree or have ideas? Quote

PCV valve i replaced mine once cause i thought it was blocked seem to help with the milky look inside the oil cap but i don't know whether that was due to me driving it harder or not ?? try it they're cheap as chips. JiP Posted February 24, 2009 Author Report Posted February 24, 2009 Well i need to replace it now. :hmm: Its now broken. It is spitting oil out of the broken bit. The main of the oil splatter is coming from under the higher side of the rocker cover seal. I can't see if all the work done on the weekend worked cause of this leak. Quote
kangaroosa Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 I used to find that over tightening the rocker cover down caused leaks. Just do it up firm without causing the rubbers (the circular ones under the nuts) to distort. Quote
coln72 Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 How long has the catch can been on? I ask this as my old mans was running one for a short time and it was pressurisingf the crank case. It actually shot the dip stick out far enough to short out on the coil. Quote
Trev Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 The catch can on JiP's car is vented. Quote
JiP Posted February 24, 2009 Author Report Posted February 24, 2009 The can has been installed for about 4 months and still empty. I don't know if its cause the car pissing out oil and there is never anything to catch or something else. Quote
SLW42 Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 take the catch can off and maybe see how it runs without it and if it still pisses out oil then you know thats not the problem!!! just and idea Quote
coln72 Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 The old mans was vented too. It was found that one of the fittings was too small. Nothing showed up until its first serious run when it started to break down badly. Open the bonnet and there was the dipstick against the coil. Quote
KE30_KE35_KE55 Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 How much blow bye has the engine got? to test this remove the oil filler cap with it running and see how much by passed compression is exiting the filler cap. Quote
towe001 Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 This kinda reminds me of the time my uncle was complaining of his camry having a lot of oil leaks etc etc mechanic after mechanic after mechanic as he drove back from darwin couldn't figure out where the leaks were coming from till one at gympie pulled off the hose that goes from the cam cover to the carby and tried blowing through it.... it had that much carbon and crap in it, it wouldn't even bend. Couple of bucks later and no oil leaks Quote
JiP Posted February 24, 2009 Author Report Posted February 24, 2009 Both hoses were bought with the catch can. So i assume they can't be blocked. Quote
Trev Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 And the car does not have the above normal amount of blow-by. Quote
towe001 Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 Just remember what "assume" means ASS of U and ME and its always the simple things that can cause the most trouble Quote
Taz_Rx Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 One of my fav saying is also "assumption is the mother of all f@$kups!" :hmm: ...Anyway, if its leaking on the drivers side of the motor it may be worth checking if all of your sparkplug tubes and/or O-rings aren't leaking. I've tried invane befor the fix a "tappet cover oil leak" only to discover it was actually coming from the sparkplugs. PCV valves are pretty easy to check, just blow/suck on them which will tell you the direction and how much resistance is in them. Quote
