Twin Carbs Or Efi On Worked 5k?

Featured Replies

What do people think is a better/more powerful/more tunable setup for a worked 5K?

The EFI setup for K series motors or twin carbs?

If twin carbs, are Aisans up to the job or is it really worth the extra for webers?

Currently have the EFI setup going but its having warmup / idle issues possibly due to the cam, and i can't help but wonder if it would all just be easier with carbs...

Any help / experience / advice appreciated,

Cheers ;)

Oh and its running a standard computer.. i assume this offers very little scope for adjustment, are these setups worth putting an aftermarket computer on?

Ive not had a close look but the only tuning thing i noticed was at the air flow meter (bottom left of the pic). Is that all?

Yeah AFM is about the only thing tunable.

Definately worth going aftermarket ECU. Try and find something cheap that also has ignition control like this maybe...

You can then also upgrade your injectors as they'd be near maxxed out already on a worked 5k.

If you've already got the EFI on and running you'd be absolutely INSANE to remove it for any form of carbies. :jamie:

Cool you bought No Dice's car. wicked.

I'd stick with the EFI and tune it. If you don't mind some electrickery you could run a Megasquirt, that's probably as tuneable and cheap as you'll get it.

You wont get much change from 1000 bucks to go twin carb and that money spent on EFI will be a much wiser solution.

As a carb man, I'd back Philbey!

The carbs will cost you at least a grand and quite likely twice that before you're finished.

If you can fit an aftermarket tuning computer you should be able to set the injector system up better than carbs, although I'm not sure how tunable the early injections were. You might be short of some sensors compared to the systems from a decade or two later.

The tunability is all in the ECU. You will need some appropiate sensor for the given ECU too but thats no major drama. Most aftermarket ECU's use MAP sensors, not AFM's, but this may be built into the ECU anyway. You'll probably need a new water and air temps sensors at the least.

having played around with both, I'd say stick with the EFI and just sort out your tuning, side draughts are worth power but like everyone has said, it will cost.

Webers aren't the only side draught out there, dellotto's are (IN MY OPINION) a better carby, and cheaper too.

The other thing is, you can't bet the sound of a set of well tuned Juggs!!! :jamie:

Appreciate the responses, thats pretty much exactly the sort of stuff i wanted to hear.

Just a few more cars to get through and that little puppy will be at the top of the list

I do have a spare haltech F7c but thatd be fuel only, ill see what i can come up with.

Is the person that originally worked this old girl on Rollaclub? Id love to know some of the specs and history!

having tried both, top end they are pretty much the same but with fuel inj the low and mid rosponse is far better and more efficient, spend the money on an aftertmarket ecu and enjoy the overall difference, it is very noticable as you wiil find out. :D :D :P :( :( :(

PS. try a new external fuel pressure reg, the ability to adjust the fuel pressure may help with your start ups and idle problems.

Twin Carbs all the way! Plus lumpy cam! I love mine!

Not sure which would be the best for overall performance...but seriously,

Carbs...

The Induction!! Soooo good!!

Definately stay efi, and as someone else said look into megasquirts, theyre cheap and very cool

yep agreed

ive been stuffing around with megasquirts on my mates 12a rx7, for the price, you get ALOT of features.

can be a bit tedius though to get running well, you do need to spend alot of time tuning (if you road tune that is) and you need to be pretty good at wiring to get it all wired up, especially if your going to build new circuits for extra features.

if your going to go aftermarket ecu, you may as well get one that does fuel and spark (unsure what you do about CAS on k motors, but I'm sure its do-able). then you can fiddle with the ignition timing too.

in the rx7 we have a best time of 13.096 for 1/4 mile and that is just from us road tuning! still going after 18months to.

carbs on the other hand are cool, since they are old school, and everyone loves the noise of decent carbys.

(my dream is a 1970's skyline GTR with tripple carbs, damn that would be cool)
