madKE35coupe Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 Hey there guys and gals.i have been a tyre fitter since i left school in 2006, and i just kinda feel like I'm not going anywhere with it? I have been thinking about getting into something different, but there arent many choices out in these country towns. Has anyone else been through this stage? Not quite sure what to do :/ Quote
Clapped out Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 Is there anything in specific you want to do? Is relocating an option? Quote
altezzaclub Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 Can you branch into wheel alignments? They'll always be a need for tyre fitters, (like there was for blacksmiths now I think of it...) but it is a pretty limited career. Where the growth seems to be is in computer systems in cars, you could PM Rob83ke70 and see what he reckons. He's a tech for Peugeot, and is constantly updating on ECUs with courses. Same when he was working on road trains a few years back, the ABS braking systems were all computer controlled and most older mechanics knew nothing about them. Its a bit of a tough time to find jobs with the economy slowing down, so don't burn your bridges without something to go to! Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 Young and unattached, go to the mines. Earn a lot of money in a 5 year period, save it, and do something grand, like spend 10 years living like a king in Thailand. Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted March 9, 2013 Report Posted March 9, 2013 Move to the coast. I could get you a job at my work. Quote
ke70dave Posted March 9, 2013 Report Posted March 9, 2013 how about a tyre fitter in the mines? http://mycareer.com.au/jobs/eyre-peninsula-area-sa/mining-oil-gas/mining-maintenance/8781265+tyre+fitter.aspx?RefineUrl=%2fsearch%2fjobs%2fSA%2fport-augusta-and-eyre-peninsula-sa%2f%3fs%3d500%26sf%3d3&utm_source=Indeed&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Indeed $40/hour! New environment, could lead to something else. Quote
madKE35coupe Posted March 9, 2013 Author Report Posted March 9, 2013 Well i am married with 2 kids so i didnt really want to be away for weeks at a time. And the tyre fitting jobs at the mines would be great but it costs about 5 grand just for the courses and tickets :( Quote
7shades Posted March 9, 2013 Report Posted March 9, 2013 Mobile tyre fitting? Get a business loan and the required vehicle/equipment and work for yourself. I know its more of the same, but mobile fitting is HUGE overseas and hasn't really taken off over here yet. People will happily pay extra for convenience. Also you're rural, and all Ag machinery fitting is pretty much done on the farm. Combine the tyre fitting with a lube service and you'll never be short of work... Quote
madKE35coupe Posted March 12, 2013 Author Report Posted March 12, 2013 Heh, lube. Not that kind of lube reed :) you wouldnt want this stuff anywhere near little tommy. A good friend of mine actually buy their tyres in bulk from china and have their own mobile fitting business. I just don't know if i want to do something different.....tyres get a bit boring after a while Quote
