Hey guys,

 

I've got the 4k I'm going to rebuild up on an engine stand, have all accessories off valve rocker off, push rods out and now at the point of removing the head but I cannot get enough pressure to losen the bloody bolts!

 

Even cracked out the rattle gun and it couldn't budge them. I've hit them with wd40 and left overnight and still no joy.

 

Also have same issue with sump drain bolt. Anyone ever had this problem and know how to get the bloody things free?

Only solution here is to try harder

You could try heating them up with a blowtorch.

Tighten them in a little to crack the seal the undo them. A breaker bar is helpful or a steel pipe over the end of you socket wrench.

or a steel pipe over your breaker bar for maximum torque (make sure you use decent 6 point sockets)

Also, instead of pulling or pushing the ratchet give it a good thump with the bottom part of your palm, best way to break them free.

As mentioned - slide a piece of CHS over the handle of your ratchet for more leverage.

 

Or - while holding the head of your ratchet - give the handle a gentle tap with the wide face of a significant hammer/mallet. Saves bruising your palm.

Thanks guys, bit of blowtorch heat and a bar over the breaker bar got them off. Still can't work out crank pulley bolt and can't find a tool to hold it in place so any suggestions (not involving using my palm or starting the engine) would be great.

Breaker bar and rubber mallet give it some good solid strikes. Let it sit at your 9oclock when facing the balancer and strike down. Should only need 2-3 good blows.

 

don't use your palm unless you want to end up crippled. Its just habit for me thats been hard to stop

With the crank bolt, I just usually use a rattle gun, I've also used a breaker bar and a block of hardwood before (when it has been extremely stubborn), by jamming the wood inside the engine between the crank and the block wall (obviously with the sump removed), probably not recommended but it works,

I think the block of wooden between the crank & the block wall is how we all do it !

Thanks Guys, I have been looking at the block of wood against the crank option but didnt want to float it as an idea incase i got shot down!
