Hi

I'm looking for advice on flywheels. I have a K series powered clubman sports car and I have a 5k for it. I want to fit a light flywheel. I have seen a TODA one listed for a 4k but it is very expensive. Can someone tell me (a) if there are problems fitting a flywheel for a 4k onto a 5k motor and (b) where do you get a light flywheel which costs less than a whole engine?!

From what I understand it is not really worth the price/effort to go to a lightened flywheel..

I wouldn't have thought that the case, especially in a race car scenario. I don't know the dangers of lightening the original flywheel but I'm sure you could always take one to a shop and get them to suss it out.

 

Failing that, I can't see why it wouldn't be possible to get one made from billet aluminium if you supplied them a flywheel to base it off... can't say I know how much this would cost though but can't hurt to get a quote.

I had my standard flywheel machined to lighten it up a little, whilst i was getting the clutch contact surface machined. It cost me a total of $70.

The guy before me put mine in so i don't know how much it was or what it is even but does it rev up quickly :thumbsup:

JUN makes 3.7kg and a 3.4kg flywheels for 4Ks however I imagine the price is much like TODAs.

your talking hundreds of dollars for like 1kg reduction. I don't think its feasable, machining your current one will smooth it out giving you more clutch grip and lighten it up abit at the same time as kangaroosa said.

Light flyheels do make quite a difference. Until you want to go up a hill, which in this case isn't applicable. :thumbsup:

 

Most good engine shops should be able to do something for you, however you'll never get down to the weight of a Toda or TRD f/w. However, you're not selling your first born to get it either......

Like Redwarf said it does make a difference just got mine done and I must say it does get to 7grand a hell of a lot faster.

 

But it does take a little away from the staying power up hills????

 

I just had the stock 4k one done, good shops now how much to take off them.

Lightening billet flywheels isn't a probelm, just don't go there with a cast one, my mate know's of a RX-7 driver that wrote off their car and tried to amputate there legs when it exploded, not very pretty.

1. Can a 4k flywheel bolt straight onto a 5k motor (are the cranks the same in every detail?)

2. who currently makes custom aluminium flywheels? (do they cost less than the $800 for the TODA?)

I have decided against a lightened iron one, just aluminium sheet between it and my legs

in the FAQ section, in the "building a tuff 4K motor" section, there is a really informative few paragraphs on lightened flywheels :P its really interesting :y:

People have been lightening cast iron flywheels for years, its just the ones that are done excessivly that cause problems.

 

Think I remember that unlightened flywheels in grey motored holdens would let go if you could rev them hard enough.

it certainly is.....not put in yet, but I am hoping for great things from it. I thought I would get a steel flywheel as there is no protection at all for my legs if it lets go. And they rev quicker which makesa big difference in a flyweight car (400kg!)
