Hey thanks for the reply! So I'm a bit confused as to my options... 1) Don't bother with the cam at all and get the 32/36 weber jetted to suit a 5K with shaved and ported head (weber was what started the whole cam issue) 2) Get my 5K hydraulic cam re-ground - I've been told by two parties that this is not a good idea. 3) Get JDM 4K Dished piston push rods and 3F lifters - this would require a lot of searching around from what I've read from threads on the topic. Still unsure if I'd run a 4K solid cam with this setup or get my 5K hydraulic cam re-ground? I'm thinking just take the easy way out and don't bother with a cam... but a cam would kinda finish my car in terms of engine mods; there's not much else I'd like to do. Cheers.

Awww crap. I never even looked past the General Information section. So it says that you can swap the lifters if you find the 3F ones... but can you use solid lifters with a hydraulic cam? I'm not worried about high revs, it's getting the cam re-ground that worries me. A solid cam will apparently mean less hassles since the hydraulic cam getting ground produces spring(?) pre-load issues... Edit: Couldn't see anything relate to machining rocker posts for hydraulic cams... will double check. Found this: But I don't think it's what you meant... haha.

Hey. I've searched for this topic and have found camerondownunder's thread but I'm still not sure I have the info correct. I'm considering swapping my 5K hydraulic lifters to 4k solid lifters and swapping the 5K hydraulic cam to a 4k solid cam. The reason for this is that I've rung up two cam places (Tighe and CEC in WA) and they both said that re-grinding a hydraulic cam will cause problems. I've been trying to figure out ways to get around this and so far I've been told that a solid lifter conversion might be the go. I know there are people who have done this and used A12 push rods or something? But can it be done how I've described it? As in, just convert to 4k solid lifters and 4k solid cam and not change anything else? Cheers.

I just rang up Tighe cams and Camshaft Engineering Company and they BOTH said that the spring pre-load changes when you grind the 5K cam. They said that you'd need to account for the pre-load by adding length to the push rods or using adjustable rockers from a 3K... Why has no one (on rollaclub) mentioned this? Surely if people are getting their 5K cams ground they'd be notified of this problem by the company doing the grind... why not let other people know?

That's friggon hot! What are those wheels/specs?
-
I just did! Thanks for all the info on the cams, Chris!

Chris to the rescue! Haha. Awesome.

Cheers guys. Can anyone answer my questions about the duration? Also, which profile would best suit a daily 5K? I wouldn't mind some lumpiness...
-
Cheers. I thought tighe cams were a brand... haha. Are they a company that grind cams to a certain profile and have names for those profiles (eg. 104)? And they're based in Queensland... would that mean I'd need to take my engine apart, get the cam out, send it to them by courier to have it ground and then sent back to me? Hahaha... this is going to get tricky... On their website under Toyota profiles they only have a listing for a 3k and the FAQ I'm pretty sure says that all K series except sprinters have the same camshaft. Is that right? If so, I could just buy a K series camshaft and send it over or buy one off someone over east. Cheers. Edit: I'm still learning about how the camshaft works within the engine... so they're saying the higher the "advertised duration" a cam has, the longer it is letting fuel/exhaust in/out? Hence the lumpier sound? They say strong midrange is 270 advertised duration and mild is 280... what does this mean?

Hey. I'm buying a Weber at the moment and the guy jetting it asked me what had been done to the engine so he could jet the weber accordingly. I found out and told him that the head had been shaved and ported to 35mm. He asked me if I was sure that there was no cam. I said yes. He said: So, if I get bored of the Weber (which I can see happening), I'm wondering which cam will go well in a 5K? The FAQ says But by "best for power 4K/5K", does it mean best to produce a powerful 4K/5K or best for an already heavily worked 4K/5K? Also, does the FAQ mean to say that you can get your stock cam ground to match the specs of a Tighe 104? If not, how much would a cam like this be likely to cost? Cheers.

I know nothing about porting haha. Also I don't have a die grinder. :P -
I'm interested as long as it's after my Weber is installed, which should hopefully be this weekend.

Cheers. You mean it was not that much better performance but still noticeable or not noticeable at all (apart from induction noise)? Apparently I could do it with some files... so I'm thinking about doing it. -
Hey. I'm about to get a weber and was wondering if anyone has made their carby porting holes (top of the intake manifold) bigger to allow more fuel/air to get in. If anyone has, how did they do it and did they notice a difference? Cheers. :P

Are they all photoshopped? Haha.
-
OMMMMMMMMMMMFG..... f^^^ yes is all I can say. That's the best (non-rally) driving I've seen..

PM'd.

Pleaaaaaase do an article! So many people give great replies that would be perfect candidates for an article yet no one seems to want to write one up. :) If I had the knowledge I'd write heaps haha.
-
Another great reply! Cheers! :y: Only concern I have is if I'll be able to do it myself haha... No doubt it would be cheaper... for someone with no electrical experience, is it feasible?
