  1. Once the new engine was sourced, built (very amusing watching 3 guys load the engine into Blue Thing via the hatch using a forklift & lots of jiggling about, not so amusing when the fork nearly punched a hole in the hatch glass that had not long ago been replaced) & brought home it was out with the old & in with the new. Well so I thought  By the by full credit to my mechanic, his honesty did him out of a fair amount of work but as I was low on funds he pointed me in the right direction with doing it all myself (with the help of a few mates of course!) Being a bit of a pedantic (read: Anal) bugger at times I thought to myself "while I'm here I may as well..." (its a curse that phrase I swear) & while the engine was out began to replace pretty much everything that was knackered, half knackered & cleaned/painted everything else. The reason for this is it had previously suffered a massive oil leak which spread oil absolutely EVERYWHERE inside the engine bay and somewhat beyond so away I went with the degreaser, scrubbing brushes and scourers. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of this stage of it all as I was without a camera/phone with camera. The remaining bits of air-con gear were removed, the new engine went in (old one went onto a stand & stashed away), everything was hooked up & I swear, the moment before I turned the key (to turn it over with the ignition disabled in order to build oil pressure up for first start) is the most nervous I have been in my life. Relatively simple in the grand scheme (replace identical engine) but having never done anything like this before & NOT screwing it up I was one happy fella when she fired up!
  2. Greetings, I've been meaning to try & compile a thread about my other-half... I mean my car build (takes all my time & money, may as well be :P ) for a while now so here goes. It all started out back in 2006 when I became the (not-so) proud owner of an AE80 Hatch which was affectionately named Blue Thing after I discovered the 2-AC engine & 4 speed manual box not really good for much other than getting from A-B rather slowly unless pushed hard. I did however gain much driving practice after being a pizza delivery guy for a few years & found I had a liking for the handling characteristics of these little hatches, just needed a bit more poke. Shown here with horrible 13" steelies the morning I discovered someone decided to take it upon themselves to smash the windshield, rear passenger window & the hatch glass :o NFI who or why but, thats the 'burbs for ya :glare: Skip ahead a few years & I've finally had enough of the lack of go from this thing & decided rather than try & made a silk purse out of dog-poo I'd be better off just buying a good car to start with. Having always had a hankering to have a 4AGE between my strut towers I was willing to move over to the dark side that is FWD in order to have a car that came with one in the first place. Yes I could've gone the AE86 route but (probably due to the hype over Initial D ) the every man & his dog wanting one factor put me off & not having the time/knowledge/skills/space/money/tools to put a 4AGE into a KE70 it was pretty simple for me, the AE82 it was. No not the prettiest shape in the world but I liked the boxiness compared to the AE92 & financial reasons put later models out of reach. It had to be a hatch as I'm not a fan of the seca's, never have been, never will be. Kinda like SV22 Camrys...don't like 'em, dunno why :hmm: Not being a RollaClub forums member at this particular point in time (nor having internet access readily available) meant that dfunkt was my treasure hunter/liason & mentioned that someone here was looking to offload theirs (to buy a Valiant? ), so after a nice cruise & a few drinks (its my shout next time Nobby!) a deal was struck & I became the new owner of a white AE82 TC hatch....plus quite a few spare bits for it! There's alot of praise (& abuse) for these cars scattered around so I'll just say I was happy with the car I had. It came with a few upgrades, from memory: Exedy HD Clutch, SAAS pod filter, ?? cannon muffler, lowered springs, Whiteline Rear Swaybar & 15" Enkei Rims. I returned it to stock condition (like I said, came with spares lol) for RWC/Rego to not have any hassles but as it turned out, I did have a small problem... There was a lovely knocking noise coming from the engine & I will never forget the look on my mechanics face when he popped his head up from under the bonnet after I had started it & gave me the signal to kill the motor :( Long story short I was then making lots of phone calls trying to track down a rebuilt bigport 4AGE as I just wanted to replace what I had. Turned out finding one, let alone at a decent price & in the same state as me was harder than I'd imagined.
  3. I don't think you've wasted anyones time, its nice to have to sit down & have a think about a problem to help someone out from time to time. Plus this thread answered a few questions I had of my own so you saved me alot of effort! :y:
  4. Heya altezzaclub, I found using 4"/5" ribbed hose from industrial-style dust collectors to work quite well, even with multiple bends. My airbox draws through this as the inlet is tucked in just behind the lower part of my front bumper, have yet to suck up anything other than an errant bug. Wow, sounds like someone didnt take their smile pills.... :n:
  5. The Pick-A-Part on Sydney Rd in Campbellfield has a clean white KE55 4 door atm. No engine or box, dash has been had a go at, rear passenger wheel arch rusted out badly & no front guards or suspension. Interior looked clean as, brown vinyl(?) seats with no apparent tears or major wear so might be worth grabbing, doors with glass & boot looked in good condition. Pretty sure the diff/rear suspension was still there as well. I scored a $500 if-I-can-find-one-new sunroof for rebuild project for $90 so its been good hunting today
  6. I might just be able to drag my butt outta bed in time for this, its not as early as the wake up for Hanging Rock was...well was MEANT to be >| Count me in!
  7. Bugger, just discovered that the next meeting is the same night as when I'm due for evening child supervising again :sob: Will try to make other arrangements so I can be free, although she is 10 so just I might lock her in the car with her DS & the dogs
  8. LOL That dude was creepy & hilarious at the same time!! :glare: I also found this whilst wandering through the sea of Harley Davidsons in the bike section It appears to be a chev-based V8....would go like stink in a straight line but lord help you if you wish to stop quickly or umm...turn!! It'd weigh a ton! :laff:
  9. Heya all, just back from Hanging Rock & thought I'd post up a few shots for the benefit of those who couldnt make it  A great day out, way more cars than last year despite the weather looking dodgy early. Although to quote dfunkt "there's more Mustangs here than Ford ever brought into the country", I hit 50+ before I lost count :(
  10. If you're ever in the bowels of Sunshine West you see some absolute shockers that nearly make you crash as you're staring at the damn thing wondering how the heck its still going let alone registered! :blinks: After watching that video I needs to gets myself to Norway ASAP!! Is it sad that I find that kinda activity appealing?
  11. Doh! Missed out due to supervising a small child for the evening but am keen on making the next meeting...heck maybe even finally sign up :laff:
  12. A quick visit to your local wreckers with a screwdriver should sort you out a few spares for yours  $1 entry & everythings cheap...I love Pick-A-Part!
  13. I'll be there to say g'day & check it all out, well that is if dfunkt's kind enough to let me bum a lift? Back at work now so used to 6am wakeups again lol.
  14. Amen to that, may that tincan RIP once I salvage what I can from her lol. Still have that Cressida lip hanging around, might be up for grabs once the carbon lip's finally finished (read:I get around to it)
  15. That is awesome, the advantage of the rust is so that theres no stress if you lose it into a snowbank :laff: Scary part is tho I see cars in that condition (& worse) driving around our roads every day... :blinks:
  16. According to my Haynes manual for an AE82 the color codes for the wiring going to/from the alternator (for 1988 & later models)is: Yellow-leading to the 7.5A Charge fuse (the manual says Yellow/White for 1987 & earlier models, the rest of the codes are the same), 2 x White-leading to main harness & a Black/Yellow-leading to the 7.5A Engine fuse. Hope this helps, as for the AE71 I have no idea, sorry dude.
  17. Luckily I managed to 'borrow' a vacuum pump for when I did the layup of the bonnet, its still a work in progress (i.e not finished & stashed in shed) & I think I still have the mould floating around gathering dust somewhere :hmm:
  18. When you're setting the timing on a 2AC you need to have the bottom vacuum line from the distributor disconnected & plugged, otherwise your timing settings will be out.
  19. Sorry for extra post, I am only just beginning to relearn internet browsing on a PC rather than a mobile phone! Front bumper lip layup Front bumper lip close up Airbox for AE82 TC Passenger mirror for AE82
  20. What altezzaclub has said is it in a nutshell :-) Having done a bit of this kinda stuff both for employment & personal projects, I can recommend that you do some browsing via Google etc for different methods/techniques & traps for new players if you're going to take it on yourself(such as methods of preventing air entrapment in you laminates). Getting it done professionally will equal $$$$, not necessarily because the materials are hugely expensive but because you're throwing labour cost at it & to get it right takes time. If you're still keen on it I can recommend that you have a few practice runs on some smallish stuff to get the hang of it then go nuts :-) By the by fixing rubber has been near on impossible to do with a neat finish (i.e heat sealing & glues=FAIL :-( ) but what has worked for me in the past is a small metal backing plate with screws holding the edges together but mounted at the rear so it cannot be seen. can't believe I forgot this....here's a shot of the front lip I made for my AE82 a while back...I don't have the tooling for this one anymore but it was pretty simple
  21. Heya guys & gals, just wanted to wish you all a happy, safe & cop free GOR cruise! I shouldve been there but unfortunately work on project car took longer than expected (as well as having to find a new home for it) so instead of cruising I will be dumping primer on bare metal so the damn thing doesnt rust on me! :-( *off to sand bog yay*
  22. Heya dude, running a search of the forums helps alot but to save you some time and effort this link should help you out. Its from the Toymods forums and has been a huge help in my AE101 Twin piston onto AE82 Twin Cam upgrade, hope it helps you too :-) http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/showthread.php?t=142&highlight=ae82+brake+upgrade This one may also be of some assistance... http://www.twincam.info/index.php?showtopic=1063&st=0
  23. A V8 powered Corona?!? Holy sweet mother...never ever would I expect to have one of those blast me from the lights, freakin awesome! Then again with a 2AC 'rolla, EVERYTHING blasts away from me at the lights lol
  24. Hey,the old 3 ribber aint too bad! It powers my hatch (when I have a fuel pump that works) on a daily basis quite nicely :-) Though it is a 7 rib block I'm modifying for more power LOL. Bigport head + turbo = GOODNESS
  25. Another place I can recommend to go to for RWC is Keilor Park Clutch & Brake, which is at 20 Berkshire Rd, North Sunshine & I think its the cnr of Berkshire Rd & Salisbury Ave. The owners names is Sam & has been my emergency (read:can't fix it myself) mechanic/RWC guy for the last 6yrs,last one cost me $110 a month ago but is worth it. Provided you're not tryin to register a rustbucket/deathtrap he's generally pretty good, though he will pick the obvious things that need attention & I don't recommend arguing with him as he can always find more for you to fix! Lol. It is a good idea to call first rather than arrive randomly as he may not be able to fit you in, the number's 9312 0044 to save you the trouble :-) Cheers Luke
