  1. I have a YH81R dyna.... much more unconventional than a falcon lol... I might add that it has increased CR, ported head, 260 degree camshaft, electronic dizzy, and extractors..... makes it even more unconventional.... Robert.
  2. wet down the ground around your makeshift booth before you start - it'll keep the dust and shiz from flying around. +1 for what oh what nissan said!!! NEVER use bog over paint unless it is specifically for that purpose - I learned that the hard way! :locked: I find a couple of books that help me are Gregory's Spray Painting and Gregory's Car Body Repairs - can't remember where I got them from - more than likely supercheap or repco. Also - I find you can get tins of paints from local paint shops that are the around the same price and better than SCA paints. Get a book it'll save you in the long run!!!
  3. we managed to fit a set of 8" wide rims (not sure of offset) under my ke55 for the speed weekend in Bathurst a couple of weeks ago. One wheel weight was scrubbing on the strut so that had to be pryed off - fairly close fit. SO should be able to fit 7's? to your ke55. Although the rims we had were 13s and had slicks on them with a lowish sidewall (can't remember specs, sorry). Might I recommend rolling the guards?
  4. well from experience, the ae92/ae93's with a 7afe are known for gunking up the engine and blowing lots of lovely smoke out the tailpipe. I went down to sydney to get one for the bro in law and didn't notice it blowing any smoke. Got home and did an oil change and there was stop smoke in it :locked: Now it blows a shitload of smoke (better with thicker oil) and burns the oil quite well that it's probably getting an oil change once a month now with the amount of cycling the oil goes through. That's all I know thus far with these that I am under the impression is a common fault with that engine.
  5. Looks fantastic - now if i can get the motivation to finish my ke20...
  6. I got my hubcaps today!! WHOO! Now I shall polish them and then camera them and then you shall all see my beautiful shiny hubcaps :P
  7. just get one in good condition, keep it clean tidy and well maintained, pop some sensible wheels on it (try 15's) with really good rubber, don't make the exhaust too loud, and enjoy driving it.... nothing like a little car with good rubber and good air conditioning as the daily driver!! ours has monroe gt gas shock absorbers all round and a lot of nolethane suspension bushes courtesy of previous owner, and new steering rack bushes (that I put in!!) with pirelli tyres on 14" stock steel rims (actually off a kia jb rio) and aside from the engine burning oil its wonderfully quiet and has great air conditioning and handles brilliantly. I have 185/60r14's on it at the moment (stock size is 175/65r14) and it was either going to be those or the 195/50r15 depending on what rims I got cheap, it turned out I had my choice of either 14's off a rio or 15's off a jazz.... was thinking about toyota yaris 15" hubcaps lol.... I have no problems with nice black steel wheels as long as the tyres are good!! the previous owner had retreads on the car, with the front two being chomped out from having 16mm toe in.... hmmm.... and the steering rack moving 20-30mm wouldn't have helped either.... its all good now lol... I wouldn't stress too much about modifying it, if you are keen, do little things at a time but make sure you look after it and keep it in good condition. I'm sure a set of ceramic coated or heat bandaged extractors and an exhaust pipe 1/4" or 1/2" larger with *good* mufflers wouldn't hurt anything! cold air induction is always a good thing too! Robert.
  8. http://www.gates.com/part_locator/index.cfm?location_id=3002 gates say that both the 5s-fe and the 3s-fe are NOT interferance engines.... maybe time to check this with toyota, and then maybe I should ask the boss what on earth is going on??? Robert.
  9. Coarse green buffing compound hey? What's it called? The silvo's going ok apart from the rusty areas where it needs a little more arm work. I'm hoping to get this thing on the road soon so I'm not driving my race car as my daily - just got done for negligent driving :no2: I would've been better off being caught going 10k's over the speed limit - less points gone and less fines, considering it was a low speed uey with wheel squeal... perfectly in control and noone around to hurt. :) Ah well, wrong thing, wrong place wrong time saga
  10. So the general consensus about the eBay ones is that the door and windscreen rubbers aren't too bad but the trunk is ratshit. Does anyone know where to get a nice trunk seal from?
  11. I started off using Mothers aluminium polish for the tail light surrounds and then Rob used it all, so I used silvo to polish all the other chrome bits. I really like the results you get with silvo, does the job twice as quick and twice as good as mothers!
  12. So, since the last time I've posted I've been busily cleaning bits and being very indecisive about rubbers. I've also discovered that I need to paint inside the boot as it was lightly covered in white paint and has surface rust appearing. Over the past couple of weeks I taped up the old toyota badge for the boot and resprayed the background bit black. I took the tape off and discovered lumps in the job and assumed that they came out of the spray can's nozzle. After getting frustrated I didn't touch her for a couple of weeks and went back to it yesterday. I sanded back the lumps on the badge only to discover that they were part and parcel of the badge and were actually imperfections from the factory. GRRR! So i taped it up again and put another couple of coats of black on and polished the chrome bits. Looks a treat now - it's on the car!! I also pulled apart cleaned and polished the parkers yesterday and reattached them to the apron and cleaned up the rear trims. One of them is going to need a bit more of a thorough clean though. So after finally choosing which grille I wanted to use I went to clean and polish it today. I took one look at the one I chose and saw that it was a bit mangled and out of shape. So we have an identical one. I cleaned that one and started polishing it only to realise that it has rust that has penetrated the chrome... I had a look at the other three and chose the one you see below, and swapped the badge from the mangled one onto the one i'm using. After a couple of hours polishing it came out a treat - another half hour tomorrow and the little bits of surface rust at the bottom will be completely gone. The grilles I wanted to use The finished product (bottom - you can tell cause it's all shiny!!) :S I also polished the headlight surrounds and the 'corolla' and 'AMI' badges. Plans for the next few days are to polish the exterior chrome bits and bumpers and attach all these and the aforementioned parts to the car. I also have to either fix or replace that pesky tail light, get another lens for the left side fender indicator and a replacement passenger side headlight surround as it has some cracks on the corners, a little hole and it's a bit dinted. I also have a lady coming over next tuesday to have a look at fixing some of the flaking paint issues i have lol I also got hubcaps off ebay!!!! Woohoo!!
  13. OK. So I want to know everyone's opinions for once and for all so that I can make the best decision possible. I am currently trying to reassemble a ke10 and have been umming and aahing about rubbers for it for months. So the options are: lilavadee - boot rubber, 2x door rubbers and both windscreen rubbers = $150 +$49 post rare spares - approx $600 - $700 for a "full" rubber kit excluding rear quarters clark rubber - approx $900 for a full rubber kit scott's old auto rubbers same price as rare spares or buying the rubber in lengths myself and cutting and mitreing them to fit (not really keen on this). What are people's experiences with these brands/retailers?
  14. is toynationals still in dubbo next year? I won't know whether I'm going or not until the 2010 BLCC calendar comes out. There's usually not much going on in the way of cruises and they are all usually based around Sydney/Newcastle/Wollongong areas. There's a few of us around here, as Keith said there's me and Rob, there's Jake, Mic and El are from Dubbo and fatbastardcustoms is from Bathurst. It may be a good idea to try and get one organised... I would volunteer but I have a 21st to organise, a house to renovate, a ke10 to go back together plus 2 jobs and going back to TAFE next feb. :S What sort of rollie do you have?
  15. Thanks heaps guys! That's really cleared it up and my curiousness has been satisfied.
  16. Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone could clarify rear swaybars for me. Up until recently (when we were trying to get new bushes and links for the rear swaybar in my ke55) we thought that the swaybar was factory. The suspension place that we got them from said that there were no listings for parts for a ke55 rear swaybar. I'm quite sure that not all of them came out with one. It's just your standard CS 1980 ke55 4 door corolla. I was just wanting to know whether the swaybars were stock on a certain class of them, whether it came from a later model or if it's all aftermarket. Cheers Kylie
  17. whats the drama with steel rims and slicks? Robert.
  18. check the speedo cables attached correctly first. I have a tacho in my car and because i have swapped gear ratios and diff ratios and tyres and wheels my speedo is all out of whack, but I've driven behind my other half doing 100 and mine will be reading 110 and the tacho will sit on around 4k, so I just go by the tacho. You could always do a swap or figure out by what percentage your speedo is out (i.e. mine's around 10%, so at 60kmh zone i should be doing 66). Or get an aftermarket one. I know a friend who uses their GPS nav to tell them what speed they're going.
  19. sooooo not much has been happening since the last post. I fitted the taillights and discovered that i forgot to put the rubber gasket behind one so I took it off the other day, fitted the gasket, put it back on and then promptly broke one of the studs off the top of the taillight!! I hate old cars lol Also, had a similar story with the fender indicators - ended up buying a pair of aftermarket ones off eBay - must say that they're pretty nice for aftermarket. Got them and put them on and must have done it up too tight or something as I managed to put a pretty major crack in one of them - so I ended up putting one of the old ones back on that side.... I've still got to speak to a couple of women in town who apparently do really good touch up work as there are some flakes of paint missing off the panel near the where the valance should be and on the bottom of the rear windscreen lip. Painted the rear toyota badge black the other day - I'm assuming that's what it was to begin with as it had a very small remnant of black left on it. Unfortunately there was crap on the end of the spraycan nozzle so it's got little lumps in the paint. I'm going to be re-doing it. So after all this stuffing around I've effectively done nothing as I've frigged everything that I did to the car up and I'm not extraordinarily happy. Going to be working on it today and hopefully getting somewhere. I want to have it done relatively soon so I can dedicate the ke55 to racing and then start on the ke20, which will be my street/tarmac event car and the ke55 will be dedicated entirely to dirt.
  20. So...been a while...again! Lots has happened since last time I posted. The rear swaybar is now back where it should be and my bodyroll is almost completely non-existent. Some cock also stole one 8 off each side of my car during race week - I'm assuming they were going for car 8 or something? So I've had to paint a white square and black 88's on each rear door, not the best job in the world I managed to tear a little bit of the white square off with "safe" tape when i was doing the 88s and the stencil I used was home made so it wasn't completely rounded. All in all an inexpensive and successful exercise as I only paid $4.50 for the paint cans and didn't get charged for the paint, a couple of bucks for sandpaper, about $8 on masking tape free photonews newspaper (about the only thing it's good for) and nothing for some grease and wax remover that I had still lying around the shed. So around $13 and I have race numbers again! Alot better than $80 for the set of stickers ;) We've also had the friction plate die in my clutch in the past month so there's a brand new clutch. Took the opportunity to lighten the flywheel at the same time as we had been thinking about it for some time and the opportunity presented itself. Robinson Toolmakers in Bathurst took 2.5kg off the flywheel and it makes a huge amount of difference - one of the best things we've ever done for the car under $300. The bloke took the lip off one side and than skimmed some more and then turned it over and scalloped the other side - I think Rob took pics before he installed it - I'll have to find them... Robert (rob83ke70) and Keith (altezzaclub) also had a play around with the suspension for me last week before the khanacross. You'll see the pics of it on the "Leaf springs in race cars" (?) thread - can't remember exactly what it's called. Anyhow, they took one of leaves out of each pack chopped it in half and laid it arse about on the top front of each pack - seems to do the trick quite nicely and has lowered the car by around 20mm at the back so they took a very small amount from the coils at the front to lower it by 10mm. Still debating as to whether to lower the front a little more to match the rear end. So it got a wheel alignment to give it a bit less positive camber and also swapped the rims the front tyres were on as the whole outside corner of the treads were gone. It also turns out I have a bent strut that is affecting the amount of positive camber i have. Looking to get that fixed and also get the left hand shock absorber replaced as it's spat all it's oil. Still checking out adjustable strut tops which I'm aiming to have installed before the 5th/6th December as the BLCC is having a Speed Weekend and I would like to wind some negative camber into it to give it a bit more contact area around the corners. I'll hopefully have some pics up soon ;) Cheers Kylie P.S. my car was on the local win news last night :jamie: Unfortunately it had me hitting a witches hat
  21. Hey, I was seriously thinking about getting that rubber kit off eBay for my ke10 and then saw your post... What's wrong with the rubbers? How bad are they? Do you have pics? I was wanting to get them off lilavadee but if they are shit then i am not going to be wasting $400 (need 2 one set for other half) on them. But the other option is to get them off rare spares or a similar place for $600 plus for one kit  Loving your car btw, it's good inspiration to get mine rolling on the road again :jamie:
  22. Robinson Tool Makers in Bathurst machined 2.5kg off the flywheel and balanced it with the clutch. They took the lip off one side and skimmed it and then scalloped the other - we weren't expecting nearly as much machining as that but are really happy with the job and how it performs  Better than the engineering place in town who told us they could machine it but wouldn't and gave a Rob a big lecture how lightening flywheels is dangerous and he didn't want us coming back suing him or whatever. For f@$ks sake it's a racecar, we both know how to drive it and Rob's a mechanic - you'd think we'd have a little bit of an idea and an attitude of "Oh shit! I fuct up - maybe that's my fault and not the machine shops?" Anyway after giving Rob the big spiel about that he told him that he could get it machined elsewhere and bring it back to said engineering place for balancing...Yeah right!!!
  23. very very minimal axle tramp (hardly any at all really) in the khanacross... combine this with 2.5kg less weight on the flywheel and a lot of rain and it made for a very fun day. Kylie was happily going places in 2nd gear at full noise (and good accelleration) where she could only use 1st before! Robert.
  24. Khanacross was really interesting this time around. Not only was the car a totally different animal, it was also raining! The axle tramp has disappeared almost completely and the car now gains traction and goes! The handling or ride does not appear to be adversely affected by the change in height and rigidity either. Lightened flywheels are the bomb! In places where i would normally only ever make it to in first on the track i was into 2nd and powering on, it spools up so quickly now - half the time i got it 8grand rpm so quickly i didn't realise how much the poor thing was revving before i was changing gears. If i can ever stop hitting witches hats and garages (an extra 5 and 10 seconds a pop respectively) I would have come around 4th or 5th, but due to hitting several in the last 1/2 of the day i came 11th out of 21. Cheers
  25. I used magna internals in a bosch distributor, and I use the standard magna module and a high energy electronic coil. performance ignition services in victoria should be able to regraph it for you to suit the cam and compression. Robert.
