Don't upgrade to vista. You might as well unscrew the case and put a fragmentation grenade inside.

7shades: Windows 7 is coming soon. I think you'll like it. Its like windows vista...but it like....works! :)

Strange that microsoft gets rid of Bill and suddenly theyre capable to churning out quality software...

My laptop runs vista... and guess what? Its dead. BSOD and needs to be nuked. No surprises there...

So I'm currently operating on my 5 year old clunker of a desktop, which runs linux and works fine other than the hardware itself just doesn't cut it anymore.

I still hate computers.

Everyone who whines about vista is silly. Its like people who whine about new cars cause they are too complex to work on themselves. Vista works good. I have run it for ages, and it works better than my xp, especially for networking. Ah and windows 7 is just a better version of vista. So stop grinding your gears about vista, its probably your fault it doesn't work.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Personally though, i ran vista on my desktop for a few months....hated it and reverted back to XP. Though atm i'm posting this from my laptop that has run vista since i got it new and it hasn't had any problems at all. I do agree though that vista is quite oversized and bulky for what its meant for.

I don't mind Vista at all. BUT you need a powerful computer due to higher overheads than what XP needs. You really need 3-4 gigs of ram and at least a dualcore processor.

My main home pc (Quadcore 2.4ghz with 4 gigs ram), has run sweet, though I did recently do a reinstall after 16 months of pretty much trouble free uptime. The licence for the security software ran out so I nuked it to freshen it up.

My missus' 2 year old laptop ran Vista (Dualcore 2.0ghz with 2 gigs ram), was painfully slow. Her new lappy (updated Dualcore 2.13ghz with 4 gigs ram), runs way better. I'd put XP on it but couldn't be bothered as it is running happily. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Personally I've had more trouble over the last 18 months with XP on the 3 kids computers. Well really only on 2 of them. One of my sons has my old machine which has had XP going strong for about 3 years now without a reinstall.... That thing is like the K motor of computers.

Really I don't mind computers, they just give me the shits big time when things don't go to plan. They can be worse than working on cars in that respect.

i fail to see how vista is easier for networking than XP.

XP, you just run the wizard and its done.

vista might be alright vista to vista, but its a bit ridiculous, you must rename all computers to this workgroup name etc etc, like, why couldnt they leave the default workgroup name the same and those issues would not be present. but i think thats computers in general, change for the sake of change

WGMG - these last 3 days of work ever since getting the boot. I have no motivation whatsoever, yet I need to stay until COB Friday to finalise everything, set up stuff for the people that will remain after I go (and who don't have a clue about the software packages I use), check everything into the database so the sole remaining drafty up in Mackay can access my work, and most importantly I need the money.

Sucks major hairy donkey balls, really.

Hiro you should just bludge for the last few days and let them work it all out for themselves. Phuck'em if they don't appreciate the hard work you've put in. Leave them high and dry.

Don't worry, I've been bludging a-plenty. Wouldn't mind leaving the managers high and dry (so they think they need me back), but I don't want to screw up the other people working on the project because if things get worse then more people go on the chopping block, or at least moved next door (which is one step up)

I bought a Compaq laptop at the start of Jan last yr and it runs Vista. within 6 months i was having troubles with it freezing up within 10mins of use unless you ran it on safe mode and not being able to start in some cases.

I started using the family comp which has XP and i havent had a problem with it since.

Just pulled the laptop back out and am about to format it and chuck XP on it. Going by what others have said, it seems as my laptop is severely underpowered to be running vista.

I put vista on my computer, its nicer, more user friendly, networking was a bitch compared to XP in my opinion. After 1 month I got tired of how slow it was and over the "coolness" of all vistas extra's etc. I even went as far as getting the incomplete vista, the one they put out as a demo kind of thing before it was realised, it was cool for a while, then you get over it and how slow it runs.

3-4 gig of ram, really :y: our desktop has only 1gig and its fine. About the only time it wants to spit the dummy is right after bootup if i try to load firefox.

For some reason the early version of vista could only see up to 3 gig of ram. My little brother found that one out when he went all out and bought 8 gig of ram. Microsoft didn't really bother fixing the glitch till service pack 2 for vista to see past the 3 gig limit.

There's something like about 4-6 different versions of vista. The home edition has two different versions - a basic version and the home media centre version. Not sure about the business versions.

The same can be said for the xp to vista upgrade but the only difference this and the full version of vista is that the xp upgrade is a pile of poo.

When we setup the network between the vista desktop and the vista laptop it was pretty well much like a usb "plug and play" style. Name each confuser and it was a go.

Started getting the idea of setting up a media centre in the lounge room on the old xp clunker desktop. So i pulled it out of hibernation re-formatted the hard drive, put xp back onto it, set up the media crap, set up the wifi card and vista was wanting to connect to it.

But anyways whats grinding the gears at the moment is that Monday at work i threw my back out sliding a few boxes around. Went to the chiro that day who did some work to it and told me some things to do and not to do. Still in pain Wednesday so made an appointment to see him again that arvo and saw the doc as well who gave me pain killers, anti-inflammatory pills and the rest of the week off. And if i'm still having pain next week a CRT scan might be an idea.

And all i did was shift a bloody box with a good postural position (arms close to my body, back straight, etc etc)

Its been that bad that i couldn't even put my own bloody socks on. Toilet duties - painful experience and no bloody way was i wanting help in that area no matter how painful the experience. Todays still a little painful but a lot better, like, if i'm careful i can pick my son up :y:

while we're talking firefox vista and XP, whats with the massive page file usage i get from firefox.

my comp will idle around 350, with a few firefox tabs will go to over 700mb PF usage easy, and sometimes over a gig, and yes, it lags the shit out of my comp, but explorer just freezes and crashes way to often.

can't work out why i get so much shit written to page file, have 2 gig of ram...

thats basically the only reason I'm tempted to reformat at the moment...

and towe, where abouts in your back? i get a similar thing around the shoulderblade/rib region, its a muscular thing, get it when I'm really pushing hard on something, and then just breathing hurts for a few days. but if youhad a good position i dunno how you managed it, mines from pushing as high on a wall as i can, while reaching the other hand down to nail the brace to the ground, always good for muscle strains..

i know how you feel with the toilet duties, you just hope its a clean job with not too much paperwork :y:

Yeah, about the same area between the shoulders down to just under the ribs. I don't understand how it happened either but i have been having a lot of trouble with my back, been seeing the chiro about it for a while to get it all fixed. But i don't know, maybe my back is telling me that it's about time i got out of this line of work. It really hit home you could say with not being able to do simple things that are just taken for granted, like, putting socks and shoes on etc etc, knelling down to give my boy a cuddle and being able to pick him up.

With networking, I agree it is stupid how the default workgroup names are different between vista and xp. Once you get them right though it is pretty easy to network them.

I couldn't live with 1 gig. Sometimes for work, I'll be running access2007, multiple excel spreadsheets, an image editor, webpage editor, 20+ firefox tabs, listening to music, plus running a virus check and more all at once and still have a responsive machine. Quadcores + 4 gig of ram is great.

Firefox: I used to love it but these days it seems to be turning into bloatware. The firefox addon extensions are to useful to me to switch back to IE (which I'm not a great fan of). I'm on my xp netbook with 2 gig ram atm and in task manager it says firefox is using around 120mb. That is with 6 tabs open. Firefox is a greedy resource pig.

Towe it's not worth it if your work is ruining your body. Plus from what you write in here it doesn't sound like you really enjoy your job with your dickhead supervisor.
