the battery is in the boot of my ke70 currently have the earth bolted to chassis and then have a seperate wire going from the block to chassis is this right?

Yep, that should work fine if they are good clean contacts.

thast how it is from factory. Only difference is the battery is in the engine bay, not the boot.

 

factory there is a short chunky wire that goes directly from your battery negative terminal to the chassis.

 

just make sure, like ae82gte above me sais, make sure all connections are good.

In my ke20 the negative terminal runs to the engine block. If I run it too the chassis the car won't start...:hmm: I believe it's because the starter motor earths through the block and that is what need the most power out of the entire car. Although I don't have a million watt stereo.

...strange things!

On several cars that I've had (generally A-series powered) the big fat earth from the battery runs to the gearbox (being FWD cars) which is effectively the same as going to the block. A much smaller earth runs to the chassis to make sure it isn't floating though...

Battery in boot you'll need one earth strap in the boot to a good body/chassis point and one in the bay from block to body again.

I just had the one in the boot and it wasn't happy. Put an extra one on the block in the bay and everything seems better.

the only weak link in the system would be an earth i found going from gearbox to chassis ill sort that out today and see how i go. ill let you know if its fixed kinda sucks driving at night and all of a sudden you lose power and have to switch off ur lights to make it home even worse when theyres no street lights in your area to help guide u lol lucky i eat lots of carrots

the gearbox to chassis link doesnt need to be that big, i think it will only be there for your reverse lights.

 

in fact i don't recall there being one from the gearbox to chassis on my ke70.

 

you just need a chunky wire from the engien block to the chassis for your starter motor, and other electrical stuffs (temp/oil pressure senders)

I would imagine its an alternator problem and nothing to do with your battery. You should be able to disconnect the battery and run the whole car on the alty, that is what they're for, but don't do it because they don't like the voltage spikes!! However, if you are draining the battery while driving the charging system is faulty.

 

Once you have checked the earth connections put an ammeter on it or see an auto-sparkie & test the alty. I assume you ahvea full-size +ve lead to the starter?? Don't forget the longer the lead the more the voltage drop.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Yea the positive cable to the starter needs to be changed i think because it is one size down from the rest of the cable running from positive

I hit up a battery shop when I moved the battery to the driver's side and had them make up a +ve cable the right length with terminals crimped on.

 

That still won't affect anything except the starter motor, that's the only time the battery has to produce full power. The rest of the time the car runs off the alty, and it only needs 25-30amps to run a car at night. So you're not getting much at all from your alty.

It is ok, but not ideal. In order to get the best out of the whole system a copper earth cable should be run the length of the car.

I have known of a few V8 powered vehicles that have been unable to start once the battery has been put in the boot, add a good earth and they started fine.

 

Voltage is what moves electricity, 12 is not many, so compensate with good cable size (not the steel body of your car) for low resistance.
