Hey guys,

 

5k started to make a clack clack clack sound about 5 mins before I got home.

The sound is similar to a tappet being out of adjustment but much louder.

During driving there was no power loss or decreased driveablility. Initially I thought

maybe a bent pushrod had bent but after taking the rocker cover off I see that the pushrods are all straight

and are not fouling against anything.

 

What do you guys think this could be? One of the hydro lifers are shot or something worse????

 

I have a 4k sitting in the shed so I do have a spare motor in case this is a terminal problem.

could be anything really.

 

id whip off the rocker cover and inspect the valve train, turn the engine over with the rocker cover off and check to see if its all working as it should (cut the spark though).

Spun bearing? Were you driving it in a spirited manner?? :)

Valve train is all in order I've spun it by hand and had it at cranking speed.

Sometimes the clacking sound is there at low rpm but when you raise the rpm the clacking is constant.

I rarely ever reach 5000rpm with the motor but yes the foot was down on the throttle, when I lifted off I heard the

clacking and then it just started to get louder and more constant after that.

 

Ow well...... 5k out and 4k in it seems. Pain in the arse.....

Could be bottom end bearing but really need someone to listen to it to confirm.

very difficult to diagnose over the internets, but yeah certainly doesnt sound good.

 

just make sure it isnt something simple first. ancilaries playing up, clutch maybe, water pump maybe (i dunno, just check all the things easier to fix things you might miss before you rip it appart...)

Yeah, do that ^ one day I changed my center drive shaft bearing because there was a clunking noise and it ended up being loose wheel nuts. FML.

I can definitely hear it coming from the engine, sitting there idling you can

clearly hear it coming from the rear side of the engine.

 

Quickly checked everything else and nothing out of the ordinary.

Either way it seems as the engine needs to come out.

you're right though Twinky, motor has to come out.

Well I suppose this gives me an opportunity to rebuild the motor.

Clean up the 4k and stick it in then in the mean time fix the 5k.

 

I'll take another day off work soon and then I'll find out exactly what the problem is then.

Could be way off here but check the exhaust 3 bolt flange gasket..

 

In my mates car the nuts backed off and everytime you drove it it made a loud tapping sound that sounded like tappets but was actually exhaust..

Flywheel bolts...

It's amazing that for such a simple engine it can still be so many different faults. :hmm:

Times like that I wish I lived next to a trustworthy mechanic (oxymoron, I know) that loved to help his neighbours.

grab a long length of hose or a long screw driver and at least try and centralise the area the sound is coming from, does it click click click faster or louder with rpm?

That really doesn't tell you much. You need the rocker cover off and check it hasn't spat a rocker arm, or sneezed a valve in the guide or even broken spring. Could be the piston chasing the valve home.
