  1. Acquired a 3k block, balanced bottom end, bored .75mm with flat top pistons. only needs disassemble, clean, and reassemble How do i figure out what my compression ratio is so i can figure out what cam to get etc? I believe i need to use a syringe to measure the combustion chambers or something?
  2. nice job! I'm going crazy waiting till i can start mine!
  3. It hasn't got a welsh plug at the rear, so i guess it's not a big port. Photo's are a bit hard atm, my mate "borrowed" my camera :glare: I suppose it doesn't really matter if it's bigport or not, (would have been a nice score tho). I'll try and get my camera back to take some pics
  4. found this: "From what I can see all the exhaust valves are the same diameter , but, there are 2 sizes of intake valves . The small one is approx.33.8 mm , the larger is 35.9 mm. I have taken note of the differant valve sizes , in relation to the number stamped on the head. This will help determine valve size ,with out having to take the head off to look. In the following chart "B" stands for Big & " S" stands for small intake (33.8). Engine Stamp # Port Valve K 22 B S K 22010 11 B S 3K# 24010 151 B S " 29 B S " 24010 218 B B " 24010 113 B B " 27 B S heres the code for spotting a bigport head (without taking off manifolds). It's all in the numbers cast inbetween the third and fourth sparkplug holes. The first line is the one to realy look at, more specificly, the last three numbers of the top line should be 010 if youre looking at a bigport. As for the smallports, none of them had 010. For example, the 3K twin carb bigport head, has the numbers: 24010 on the top line, then it has: 149 underneath that. I'm not sure what the first two numbers mean. Now armed with this information, you should be able to spot a bigport head just by reading the numbers on the side of the head. " measured again.. valve is closer to 36mm. so i guess it has the 35.9mm valves.
  5. It's all in pieces and not complete, also been told it's been ported and polished. intake port measures about 30mm, intake valve 35mm. by valve gear, you mean the rockers etc? there is not much of that there. Was told it has k line inserts as well.. what are they? Its just a head from a bunch of parts i got.. I have started collecting stuff :D
  6. Got a 3k head today, the only number on it is 17, had a look here: http://www.rollaclub.com/faq/index.php?title=Tech:Engine/K_Series/Heads It's not listed. Anybody know what i have got?
  7. pics...
  8. good to know.. I guess trial and error will work in this case too.. Can't wait to get started..
  9. What engine is in it now? "standard engine" = not enough info... I don't see any advantage to changing from (I assume 3k) to 5k head. Also "4 barrel carby" ??? on a k motor? maybe you mean twin carbs? for a bit more go cheaply, add a foam airfilter like a 'ram flo', extractors, sports exhaust, and add some more fuel to the mix. otherwise read : http://www.rollaclub.com/faq/index.php?title=Tech:Engine/K_Series/How_to_build_a_tough_K_motor
  10. I really did get very good results with the spray cans. It is supposed to be a very BUDGET street/odd race car build.. I can see it ending up costing lots taking forever and being a a super neat street/show car :rolls: As I said though I don't know bugger all about car paint, after seeing ke70Dave's job for $400 I reckon 'stuff the spray cans, I'll use proper stuff' ;) I'll have to do a whole lot of reading on metallic painting... I'm sure I saw somewhere that you have to be uber careful when stirring/mixing/shaking metallic otherwise you get lots of flecks in one section, and little in another..
  11. That looks pretty good Dave When I did the guard, i did the repairs, primed, putty'd, and put on some paint only to find more small dints etc.. so i would fix them until they looked alright and paint again, to see some more little bits that were wrong, and repeated that process till it was right. I think i would probably do the same when i get around to painting the whole car.. maybe use some cheaper paint until i'm happy with the body work then do the metallic over that.. assuming that won't cause problems? I found I am a bit of a perfectionist.. Reckon it's gonna take me AGES!
  12. Actually I'm not sure i can say I have ever seen a good DIY job at all! good to me means looks like a professional did it ;)
  13. i figure i could get it done for under 1k including all bodywork, primers etc. can anyone else see another way of getting a good long lasting metallic paint job for that price?
  14. lol I have never seen a good can job either, tho i would like to do one to show it can be done! Considered acrylic, don't know enough about this stuff. can you do metallic?
  15. bahaha!
  16. I have been thinking lots about how i want my 20 to look, and I really want to have it in metallic blue. But I need it to be as cheap as possible. I am wondering if anybody has ever used the touch up spray cans to paint a whole car? they are about 20 bucks each (maybe cheaper if i buy 30 or more?) also if you have a prang, you can just go buy some more touch up paint and fix away.. I have some limited experience About 7 years ago i repaired 1 front guard using a claw hammer and block of wood, bog, spray can primer, spray putty and touch up spray cans from supercheap. I think it ended up costing me around $80. But it looked absolutely perfect, not a slight ding/wave/run anywhere. It could have been a professional job. (it did take a lot of trial and error... and time!) I finished it with a couple of coats of clear from the same brand of touch up paint. After all my hard work, it never got installed, so i thought I would give the paint a test. I left it paint side up on the dirt at my mums place, -5 degrees in winter and 40-45+ during summer. I forgot about it, and found it a few months back. Checked it out.. still perfect, no cracking/glazing/rust or anything. I washed it and it was just as shiny as when i did it 7 odd years ago! I know people have done export spray can jobs on cars, how many cans would it usually take? (trying to figure out a rough budget) any comments/experiences/ideas?
  17. x2 ditch the roof racks.. Awesome car! I wouldn't change a thing!
  18. ...... http://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/11306-brake-upgrade-for-ke20/ http://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/1704-bad-spelling-in-posts/
  19. lol I'm not saying it couldn't tow it out.. just that that's not what happened ;)it definitely do it, just need a long rope and a lot of right foot, and absolutely no respect for either car :P
  20. That was not the rolla towing out the hq.. the rolla was going way too slow to get the hq unstuck, did u not see the landcruiser in the background? I've been a 4wd enthusiast my entire life, and you could tell it was the cruiser (or similar) as the snatch strap was not going fast enough for the weight of the 25 to pull it out. Was definately something heavier to pull it out so effortlessly... Believe it or not I have towed out a hq (panelvan chopped into a firewood collection ute) with a ke20 before (growing up out bush and doing stupid stuff in cars) and you have to be going flat knacker to make it move.. There are MANY things you can do in a ke**, crossing deep water, climbing 4wd type hills, 780 degree handbrake spins on wet dirt roads @ 90kmh (and take off straight again in 2nd at about 30kmh), but a tow vehicle they are not..
  21. So I have a ke20, I will be changing to the 114.4 stud pattern. I have acquired ke 30 axles which i will cut down and fit with ke55 drums etc. I have access to an RA40 and a ke55 rear end, one of which i would like to fit after i blow up the original. Is the ke55 borg warner tougher than the ke20? Is the RA40 tougher than the ke55? Is it worth the TEM time/effort/money to cut down the RA40 diff to fit or should i look for something else if and when original dies? I need to know asap, as both vehicles are going to be crushed very soon. I have done hours of research and cannot find these answers. Do i suck at searching or something?
  22. awww but they're sooo cheap on ebay ;)
  23. damn straight the corolla won! would have got up that hill that they "accidentally" went the wrong way to get to.. and if the knob driving it had any clue whatsoever and let it rev it's ring out, it would have smashed them in that drag race too ;)
  24. Gowrie junction.. working on a ke20
  25. ok ke55 axle is shorter. Will install that one. If i blow it up later on I will figure something else out.
