Got a good early 30 dash surround?

Yeah that smoke usually comes from blow by, it's not unfair to expect a bit, but a lot could indicate something more is wrong.

2003 Sportivo Performance Upgrade Possible?
snot35 replied to brettlz74's topic in General Mechanical
Earlier lift may not help and may even hinder. The factory sets up the point for a reason, usually you'd only change it if you've changed other fundamental engine characteristics. You may have luck with the old cold air intake and exhaust tricks, but you'd have to be careful not to go backwards. I'm not entirely sure it would be worth it. -
Yeah TIG will give you a beautiful weld without much trouble on mild steel. If you have the means they're fantastic. Otherwise MIG is just fine. The fine wire also allows you to use less heat. Just as long as you keep everything clean and use the correct tips and rollers for the wire that you are using, it's actually surprisingly easy to get a good result.

Yep, I'm with philbey. E size bottle is better. I've been using a Cigweld 135 for my stuff and it does a brilliant job of panels. It would probably struggle if I started doing engine mounts and that sort of fab, but I haven't tried yet. Cigweld spools are available from Bunnings pretty cheaply. Disposables will last long enough for you to determine your settings and that's about it. There are so many variables involved in getting good welds, I'd avoid trying filler rods/materials that are being used outside of what they're designed for unless you have a stack of materials and time spare to do a lot of practice runs first.

I've been using 0.6mm on the repairs I've done so far, seems to work really well.

It could well increase the compression a little too much depending on what's been done to the head. Plus the ports are tiny. I think the 4k ones are generally bigger, or you could port it. Go with Evan's suggestion.

I think you're exagerating what I'm actually trying to say. I see 30's and 55's that are tidy that are $400 like in this case. Then some that aren't that much nicer and people are asking $2k and upward. If they've put the cash in then great, but at the end of the day most of these cars are old and high in mileage. I'm not saying the same price, I'm saying the difference seems disproportionate.

Don't Honda motors turn in the other direction? You'd have to flip the diff or something.
-
That looks awesome, I only hope my 30 scrubs up that well! Have you still got the chrome windscreen and grill trims? That would set it off even more :S

I would have thought that was pretty good for a 30 if it's in good nick. I mean, I paid less for mine, but I was extremely lucky and it needs a little more work. If there in really good nick people seem to ask a lot more for them, which always amazed me. Not sure about the 82. Depends what model. If it's a Twinky it's a bit more, if it's a knackered CS or similar I'd say it would be worth bugger all.

Oh I don't know, they seemed to wrap that BDA is some pretty decent rally cars. Other than that, I do believe you're right :S

I guess there are good and bad sets. Mine were square tops. I removed all the stupid emissions gear and then that was that. Most of the genuine stuff could be used on them too. I'm just using them because I know they are a working set. Oh, and they were free ;)

I've got Hitachis on the Lynx manifold, they're not running or tuned yet though. These were carbs that I previously had on a 180B SSS and I found them to work really well, so I'm not worried. They also were modified to fit brit SU needles for tuning. Haven't made the linkage yet, but I don't think it's going to be too difficult. From memory something hits if you mount the carb directly to the manifold, not that you would, so I'm using the Datsun phenolic spacers as well and it all goes together well. I also had to drill the lynx manifold because it only had the vertical bolt holes, not the ones that sit at an angle. Not a big deal though. I think the manifold may also need to be opened out because the intake side doesn't quite open up to the 38mm that the Hitachi is. Just buy the set for sale on here. I was lucky and got the manifold for about $130, but you have to jump on them when they come up ;)

Love the hard top too, and the KE1x's. Very nice!

Mitsubishi_galant_gto- Shed Some Light Please!!
snot35 replied to j.c grime's topic in Automotive Discussion
I think he was asking for info about the car, not everyone's opinions. And the twin cam was only in the GTO-MR apparently. Either way, you'd be up for a hell of a lot to restore it given it's rarity. I'm not sure how worth while it would be. -
Is there anything decent about that motor, other than cam?

Japan only, which often means some end up in NZ 4G32 powered but with a twin cam head. Only two valve per cylinder like a 2TG, hemi head and twin side drafts I think. 5 speed and maybe LSD as well? I couldn't be sure. Ultra rare. I'd pillage the drive train and put it in something a little less (but still quite) rare like this guy: www.hoonboy.com -
I think you're referring to Albins off road. I think the best bang for buck would be to get a T50 and the TRD gearset. They are still around. I think it works out to be around $2000-$2300 and you'd obviously need to source a K-T bell housing, which would be the hard part. I think the place in NZ that has them is called Palmside or similar. I can dig it out if you like. For road rally I'd stick with the 2.6 first rather than that ultra close. I'm not sure there would be that much difference between straight cut or helical, but that's probably for a different post  Depending on class you could start thinking about glass panels?

It might be good to get a bit of proof reading happening before hitting send, these things go both ways. I, like most others here, are very keen to help fellow corolla owners. We can't help if we can't actually understand what is being communicated. Now we understand why that might be difficult and will be more patient, but meet us half way.

What Would You Do Make This Car Look Sexy? ('85 Corolla)
snot35 replied to levvyy's topic in Automotive Discussion
First car I wouldn't worry too much! They end up pretty ragged if you're doing it right. Maybe source some twin cam mags, maybe spoiler etc if you're going to paint it. Otherwise I'd probably just do rims and keep it tidy. -
I can't even read that first post. Something about Rudy and a donkey?
-
You racing this car, or is it your daily?
-
Oh I appreciate things are worth what people pay, I just find it amazing what people will pay! If you can't get any tail lights then I guess there's no choice, but paying that much for something a little different? Each to their own of course.
-
$800 for tail lights? Are you people serious? :)
