Well this morning I spent a few hours cutting thorough that bloody clear coat. Despite using different grades of sandpapers and liquid solvol (as its abrasive) like a cutter its hard work. The result came out good however there are patches of clear coat I have missed. Is there an easier way of removing the coat, with a paint stripper- or will it damage the alloy. I was also thinking about those little flap disc sanders buying a few different grades and giving that a go. I would appreciate your advice. I put the wheel on temporarily for some tease pics. These arent water marks, thats the clear coat I mentioned.

Hey Baker, Yeah a bit of progress has been made, still need to do some small rust repairs and a manual conversion. Yeah attention to detail is paramount to me (or close enough) :) . The aim is to strip off all the old clear coat so the natural finish of the alloy is noticable. I might repaint the centre cap centres as two are more an orangey colour, and possibly the red border that embossed into the alloy I might do that too. Yes the ae71s came in that interior, come to think of it you don't see many. It was a bit grubby but with a good old school clean it came up a treat! The interior in you're ke70 is identical to whats in my white one, blue vinyl trim and door cards with no map pockets. If you're after a set of front cards with speaker holes let me know

In exchange for a rear louvre I had Paul gave me a set of CS-X alloys. Complete with screw on centre caps and matching wheel nuts. The existing tyres on the ae71 are new so they will go onto these, but first I must do what I do best and thats giving them a thorough clean, rub down and polish.... Just a few before and after pics for you're entertainment. Before a scrub with solvol paste and a hand brush After I initially wanted to polish these to the point of the finish being like chrome, however with this design of wheel it will be much harder to do and will take up time that could be better spent on other tasks for the car. With various grades of sandpaper i'll stip back the clear coat to bring back the fresh alloy finish that was quite reflective anyway. It will still be a standout

We were behind you when you were doing the u turn on the Hume Highway. I was so close do bringing the ae71 down there but my mate already had his ute set up :bash: . There was another white ke70 in the car park - looked like a drift hack and sounded preety worse for wear. There was an early ke30 that looked preety tidy, bloody auto though :n:. If you saw me, I would have at the beige flat front ke70 and the red ae71 opposite. Did you get anything from there though?
-
Hi mate, I remember initilally when you bought this as a parts car and thought thats too good to pull apart. If anything it would benefit from some tlc. So I'm glad that you have decided to fix her up again, and yes that colour is awesome especially if the finish is spot on . Good stuff mate.

Welcome to the club mate! Its nice to know another Corolla nut who owns a ke70 and ae71 :y: My ke70 and ae71 are both sedans.

I went to pick a part today on the hunt for specific rear mudflaps and I was lucky enough to find a RH one, so now I'm still looking for another. I have been in contact with some members on here and ae86dc so hopefully a mudflap/s will surface. I couldnt help myself, an ae71 csx was being scrapped so I went through the interior to find another genuine tape deck. A grand total of $10.00 for this and the mudflap  :y: Very happy. I gave the tape deck a quick clean and plugged it up in the car and its a worker, so the neighbours heard a mix of Billy Idol, Tears For Fears, Frankie goes to Hollywood... Never hurts to have a spare!

Nice work mate, keep up the good work! Is this coming on the Kinglake Cruise?

I saw this when a mate and I were turning into pick a part today (We were in a white XF ute). It looks very nice on the exterior but after the initial polishing it will looks perfect. Good work on keeping the original plates on the car too :y: :y:

Too easy mate, always happy to help a fellow enthusiast ;)

Boo, In regards to the "air injection" dads old Toyota Liteace KM20 had the air injection engine - only it was a 4k. With that too, it still had the injectors and air rail attached, but the previous owner disconnected the air pump. I was under the impression air inected motors only came in the commercial vehicles as they were imported from Japan where the emission laws were more stringent.

Welcome mate, nice to see a clean standard ke70! More photos please. ;)

I'll say its off a late 70's Chrysler Lancer, the coupe body shape. Edit: I was right.... http://www.sigma-galant.com/viewtopic.php?...366&start=0

Maybe thats fate telling you one day you'll own one, I always passed the red ae71 near grandmas when I took minty for a burn and look what happened.... I'm the proud new owner :D

I have a preety good memory when it comes to names Leah :P When you see a rusty Corolla you always appreciate the one you have ;)

For $30.00 they're preety good. They take a little pursuasion to fit i.e filing edges to sit further in or flush, but on the whole they are the essential goggles for a slanty front. Being nostalgic, I'm sure you'd like this, red car looks familiar dosen't it :D

This Corolla is quite refereshing to look at, a subtle car which stands out Good work :D

Found this for you Joe, I wonder what the difference with the olympic edition is? Colour coded wheels, grill what else? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Headlight-Protector...=item19bbd5efbe Ebay doesnt supply a description pic, so here is mine.
-
Haha even I spun out when recieved it, as it was present :bash: and I've never seen one before! Headlight protectors can be bought off ebay for a buy it now price of $30.00 plus postage. And weather shields sell for about $60.00+ postage. I know I can find a cheaper shild elsewhere, its just a matter of waiting.... You should put a gennine tape deck in the lower console if you happen to see a csx at u pull it. I looked for ages and finally came across one, installation was easy as its all stock anyway and then with the ipod I had and the cassette adapter I just plug it into the ipod and pop the cassette it and it belts out the best of 80's music :laff:

Combined auto salvage is self serve like pick a part, I just go in and ask if there is any ke70s out the back and whoever is in there says yeah go out the back to the last row. Ive been there a few times so they know who I am too.

Hey fellas been talking with dad about the conversion and he has suggested to start installing new brake shoes, rear wheel cylinders and the rubber flexi line to the rear diff assembly as its not on the car yet, so at least thats one part which is complete (apart from bleeding). In the meantime I'll buy new oils for the gearbox and diff and then its preety much doing the task of the conversion.
-
Hey Joe, Nice matching grey interior trim like mine, But I need a dash mat too. Whats the back rest on your driver seat like? is it torn or is it good. I recieved my venetian that I won off ebay too so the resemblence between yours and mine is getting much stronger. P.S nice photos taken at the servo :laff:

I'm thinking seriously but there are three vairables which may stop me. 1, Cousins hold an annual car rally and from memory its mid November, as I organise I'm a staple. 2, Rust repairs on the ae71 need to be done - Only time to do it is weekends. And I still have the ke70 to work on too.... 3, Manual conversion on the ae71 needs to be done - Only time to do it is on weekends
-
Neil, go to Combined Auto Salvage in Cooper st Somerton. A very tidy white flat front ke70 is in there with a preety good front bar.
-
Those wagon roof racks look the part indeed, and those wheels - just tops :rolls: One tough but respected ke70. Keep up the good work Reed.
