I could use it for creating my own weather systems, and envoking global climate change... :harhar:

OH HELL YEAH!!! REAL racecars!! hehehe
-
Just goes to show how many different versions of each model there is...

Funny you mention the windows, as I have never seen one WITH glass!! Both mine, and the other 3 local ones up here all have metal panels. The reason for the standard height/ driving lights/ mudflaps is that this one is gonna spend time off the beaten track... I'll be looking at using it for going up scrub, officialling (hmm... competing??) at club rallies etc. My old van had frequenbt visits to the Great Lake and driftin' down on the beach!!

I'm not exactly familiar with the 70 series... but You'll quite possibly find too that an A-series motor in that shell won't be legitimate for PRC rules. Unless you were to make the KE70 an EXACT replica of the AE71 (ie guards, bonnet, door... basically anything that is different between Ae and KE needs to be changed) Also, are you building this car to last for 6 months or 6 years?? If you don't want to throw it away after 2 seasons of racing, I strongly suggest you seam-weld the shell. Its a *c**t* of a job to put it lightly, its dirty, time-consuming, and monotonous. You'll have to strip the car back to a shell, and have a mig welder handy for about 3 weeks. But when its done, you'll have a bomb-proof shell, that will be 10x stiffer (more car control), and will last alot longer!! Anymore questions about prepping a rally car, don't hesitate to ask. Have a chat to anyother of the rally guys on here too!! Knowledge is power, and its better to build a car right the first time!!

'72 Datsun 1200 Vs. '72 Toyota Corolla 1200
st.nick replied to mikeys toy's topic in Automotive Discussion
Back in the 70's when TTE was running TE20s and TE27s in the WRC, they were a tad lacking... One did however win the 1000 lakes rally in Finland, but the rest were 3rd, 4th and 5th placings. The little Corolla was always behind the 8-ball, with an engine quite a bit smaller in capacity than its European rivals. However, the TTE mechanics worked 'miracles' with the engine by fuel injecting and added a 16v head. This bought the engine up to a 'reasonable' 185BHP. Toyota started to homologate a 2L Corolla Levin, but decided to continue rallying using the Celica. Homologation required 400 road-going examples be built to make the car legal for rallying (imagine owning 1-of-400 Factory-built 200+BHP rally-bred TE37s!!!) :D ... Apparently, alot of the TTE staff wanted to keep the Corolla as the rally car, but Head Office in Japan decided the Celica was the 'sports car' of the range that they wanted to promote through Rallying. Pity... Would have been nice to see a TE37 or RE37 WRC car hosing all the Escort BDAs!!! History Lesson over... -
...and the Corolla XX model coupe??

Ok, this is P:36 with the later model Sigma lower arms. The later ones, as said above, are longer than earier versions. From the front, it looks ok. not that noticeable Caster is well forward... But from the back... The wheels look like they are the wrong offset. It actually looks quite shit!!
-
f@$k!!! Its got panel windows!! =) Ive NEVER seen one with windows... Shaving bumpers?? You mean removing?? Its illegal... :( I got fined for having my KE30 in "group 5 trim" hehehe. I'm thinking something like the old rally escorts 'bumperettes' for something different... You follow??

I killed my old (worked 3T-c 5sp, LSD... tidy) KE36 by rolling it in the forest. Was a sad, sad day. sob I wanted another KE36... ...and I found another one. Its a bit ratty, but IMPORTANTLY... everything is straight. The 3k Bigport is knackered, and was gonna be replaced by a ?T-g. For now, its getting a kinda-fresh 4K. It'll be daily driver/weekend warrior for uni next year. I am more into Handling and Stopping than BHP. As a result I have learnt HOW to get the most of these cars, and use the small amount of BHP that K engines have... Momentum, braking late, and hurling a KE at corners!! So Project:36 (P:36) is gonna get the best setup possible, easy-easy setup!! No Corona Struts, Pug discs etc (tho I've put sigma arms in). The 4k will get extractors, bigger carby and a side-pipe. I'll keep looking for a T-g and box... Then P:36 will get serious!! Coming from a rallying background (3 years of Tas Championship in a 250BHP 4WD 323 turbo), P:36 will sit at standard height, with 4 driving lights, mudflaps etc... Interior is a KE30 dash, no carpet, no stereo. don't need carpet or stereo in a racecar!! Watch this space...

Just fitted **late model** Sigma arms to the front of "project 36". These are the 2 piece units that have a 'bolt-on' balljoint. The early model Sigma lower arm looks identical to the Corolla unit, but about 1in longer. I had no worries fitting these to the KE30 2dr, but coz I used shit bushes, and the chassis isn't exactly straight, I couldn't get a conclusive measurement. I haven't had a chance to drive "Project:36: yet with the new arms, but what I found with this swap was the following: Sigma balljoint doesn't fit properly into the Corolla unit. The Nylock nut does tighten up, and there is plenty of thread, but its definately not the fit that the corolla balljoint has. I guess the shank on the Sigma balljoint could be machined down... The Sigma Lower arm bush is longer than the KE unit. It will fit, but I had to press the arms into the crossmember with a trolleyjack!! 'P:36' will be pretty stiff in the front suspension once its on the road!! I guess with new bushes, you could grind the ends on them down a bit to make them the KE length... Once the Sigma arms fitted, the 4 tie-rod ends are all wound almost to the ends of their threads... I will have to research longer TREs when I get a chance... The front track is HEAPS wider than std. The wheels hang out of the front guards, and look almost ridiculous!! P:36 wil probably get "levin-type bolt ons" (anyone got sources??) to hide the massive overhang. Front track looks SO out of place, it needs to be matched by either a wider diff or different offset wheels on the back!! Needs to be about 50mm wider atleast. The KE Caster Bars are fine, but need the longer bolts from the Sigma to bolt them in. I'll do some pics tomorrow, and I'm pumped as hell to give this thing a thrash!! With 'fully wound up' caster bars (Ive had the bend the front guards to get clearance for the 205/13 tyres at the front), its gonna turn-in like a muv'fuka!! =)

 ^^^ Completely agree!! =) If you blantantly bash a car manufacturer without supporting evidence, then you are truly an idiot!! However, if you can positively prove "My Toyota IS better than your Nissan" with hard evidence, then fair enough... Not hearsay, not going on results of Factory Racecars, not "but my mates s13 flogged a gt-4 last week"... But, Factory BHP outputs, torque @ ????rpm, power-to-weight and distribution, braking distances, bump-steer etc etc etc You can win any "my car is better" arguement providing the facts are in your favour... Less your arguing with a bogan, coz they never listen!! =) I also agree with the fact 99% of cars built had atleast one good feature. Has anyone ever used a Hyundai Excel at a track-day?? Don't laugh... The 1.5L twincam is a punchy little motor. True, the suspension, brakes and structural rigidity left alot to be desired (nothing 50mm coilovers, 4pot brembos and a full seam-weld and cage wouldn't fix!!). But the bog-standard Excel was a match for the bog standard Mirage (both were renta-cars!!) :(

True... Don't have to be a f@$khead about stirring up the competition!! However, a bit of trash-talking never hurt anyone!! All arguements can be settled at the track (or by statistics and literature)!! =) I had a mate with a Merc. Now, me being a BMW owner (and Merc being BMWs closest rival), I had to give him a bit of grief about it!! So he sold the Merc and bought a BMW too!! He didn't like being told that his 1969 Datsun 1000 coupe would be running 2nd to a 1969 Toyota KE15 Sprinter in Targa Tasmania in a few years either!! :(

Not to piss anyone off or anything but the recent influx of V6/ca18det/rotor etc threads has got me thinking... Is mixing and matching brands really a good thing?? Do we want to go to an "All Toyota Day" and see KE's with Nissan engines?? :D Imagine the outrage of jamming a 250 cross-flow in an immaculate VB Commodore (don't like either myself, but imagine how the bogans would react!!)... Surely its the same deal with Toyota vs. Nissan?? Arch enemies from year dot?? It a shame to have the whole "Hey man, sweet Escort... Pity about the f@$king Bridgeport!!" thing going on... Retrofitting is cool as... don't get me wrong. Imagine a Lexus 4.0 V8 powered KE30!! Its just mix-matching brands has got me well miffed, thats all. Thoughts??

I'm in Devonport. I have the orange 75 2dr (see above), a KE36 panelvan (which is currently getting the things needed to register it), and a KE30 4dr which is in the backyard under a tarp, completely stripped to be a rallycar. The shell is straight and is ready to be seamwelded. Its 100% complete.... Anyone want it?? or bits of it?? let me know

Stock KE30 could still make its own clouds... My tidy old KE36, with worked 3T-C, extra leaf, Gabriel Black shocks. I upgraded front brakes and suspension (fixed errors made by previous owner). This thig was seriously evil!! She died a sad death when I barrel-rolled her in the forest. Damage was minimal, but it tore the front left rail and wheel arch away from the firewall... Kaputski!! sob The old girl at her best... She looks no where near as good now, and with a rapidly disintergrating chassis rail, she's not too well  ONEDAY... I'll give her all the attention she needs, and get her back to her respectable best. Will pull my finger out and get some more pics of the cars online here... Including "Project 36" :P

Well isn't there quite a Corolla tuning scene in Tassie!! Crazy... I've owned no less than 6 KE3Xs over the past 8 years (and a KE15 sprinter), all starting out with my one-owner '75 2dr sedan. She's had a long life, and needs some serious love (I learnt to drive in the old beast), but I still have her!! Beautiful old car!! I also had a KE36 van with a worked 3t-c which was an evil beast, and have a stripped out one-owner KE30 which was gonna be a rallycar, but I'm not building it anymore (anyone want a straight, complete shell??). Ive also had several wrecks for bits and pieces, and have shit loads of parts... I recently acquired another KE36, and am trying to source a 2 or 3 T-g and box. Hmmm.... easier said than done!! Anyone who knows of, or has one lying around, PM or email me, and we'll try and work something out. See you out there, and keep perfecting the artform... Ciao, Nick
