because you can send and receive filthy disgusting pornographic stuff? (and boobs) haha.

As for the money/wedding thing, I'm struggling at the moment with the same thing.

All our family and friends keep asking what we want for the engagement party.

I've told them that we don't expect anything from anyone.

But they all insist, we have owned our house and lived together for 4 years, so don't need anything, we have nice new furniture and house is full of knick nacky decorative stuff.

So they offer cash.... OK, I don't want to take it, but people are so insistent.

Then some of them ask how much I want! how do you answer that? I;ve just been saying "ten mill should do it" and laughing it off.

but it is EXTREMELY awkward.

We'll probably have a wishing well thing at the wedding, but same thing is bound to happen.

Both katrina and I had pretty much nothing when we got married. she was living at home, and i was in a share house and the other housemates owned most of the stuff. we didnt even have a queen bed!

Engagement presents were pretty random, but we got alot of useful stuff.

we went the gift registry for wedding, that worked well, we pretty much got enough kitchen stuff from presents. We took back a few presents that we didnt want or need and exchanged them for useful stuff.

We got alot of gift vouchers which helped in buying more house crap as well.

Though agreed no idea what to buy people that already have a house setup and don't particularly need anything.

We had a wishing well too as Cara and I have been living together for ~3.5 years now, don't need extra house stuff. A couple of the people on my dad's side were real traditional though and insisted on a physical present, but most people these days are fine with a wishing well, even if it is essentially just paying for the cost of their meal. I think we ended up with about $2k on the night from ~50 guests, but that was blown away by my uncle who couldn't make it because he got offered some extremely lucrative work over in Thailand, so he sent us $3k - the instant that money cleared, our home-loan deposit fund started :D

hahaha, essentially all the money we get for engagement or wedding will be going off the debt incurred in the process... lol

Etiquette is a funny thing. I hate the idea of giving money but what is the point of five toasters. People will generally give more when it comes to money and I think this is why some opt for the wishing well idea. You can easily get a present for less than a monetary amount and the old saying about the thought that counts springs to mind.
