well i'm using old K50s so i'm no stranger to sloppy shifting. my box at the moment is well f@$ked, the bearing noise is getting worse. i should get the exit shaft bushing replaced in my good K50 this week and swap them on saturday before i drive to brisbane again hmm. what am i talking about i can't afford to do shit with the engine at the moment anyway. whoever started this topic, put an L20 in your ke70

i have a friend called michael, he has a jap import ae71 panelvan with a jap import ae86 4age motor in it. it's a really nice clean car, and chops v6 commodores easily mick recently bought himself a nice little late model ke71 for 500 bucks and has been driving it like he stole it. he lunched the diff this week (snapped a spider gear in half), so he pulled it all apart and went to the wreckers and got a new one that looked the same i get a call friday to ask for some tips, and away the boys went to work on the car. they call me back this arvo, they've got the new diff center in, but it makes his god awful noise. mick took it for a strap but it sounded like there was a two stroke motorbike in the boot! i go over and they've got the borg warner's inspection plate off, and it's definately not like a ke70 diff i've seen before. instead of everything being internal to the housing and a pain in the arse (like a ke55 bw), this one has two bearing carriers (like a crank bearing) and out the center pops, just leaving the pinion in the housing we have a play around for a while, and i suggest it's gear noise, definately related to the pinion and ring gear. i was thinking perhaps they have vastly different clearances and aren't meshing as well as they could? we get the old center out, and the ring gear is held on by 6 bolts, mick suggests swapping the ring gears to change clearances. so out it all comes again as we're fastening the center into a vice, i say "hold on, count the teeth. i've got... 35" mick goes "... 37" count again, 35, 37. aha! we swap the original 4.11 ring gear from the stuffed center onto the good center, and ditch the 3.9 that we got from the wreckers. bolt it all back up, and she spins beautifully. make a gasket out of a folder and permatex 3, put the old oil back in and bob's your uncle! so i guess the pinion from a 3.9 and 4.11 in that series is different, unlike a jap U series where all the pinions have the same teeth, just different bearings. what's that diff called? it's definately not like an early ke70 diff. the wreckers said "nah we always see those in ae71s, you need this different center" and their suggested one was indeed the right one another day, another corolla problem solved!

because i'm lazy, does anyone know how much an L20 weighs? do people put them in 1200s and the like, or is that considered "too front heavy" like a 3T in a ke20?

what RON rating is avgas? can you tell a car's running it from the smell (say as badly as lpg)?

lancers don't have 4g63s, evos do. if there was any danger of my car sounding like a fart droning fwd shitbox then that idea would be RIGHT OUT, instead it would sound like an evo or galant - nice :P 7a-fe is superior to 1zz-fe. you'd use a 2zz-ge if you were going to bother. and whilst they may be nice motors, f@$k they're not cheap, nor is any brand-new-model motor really. even 3Ss are still fairly expensive

i don't think anything "came out" with 4g63 rwd, but people make them. jett racing have one in their datto ute, and i heard of somewhere up the coast that sells them in rwd config to put into street cars porting rotaries depends on who you talk to. some experienced porters will say if you're going to bridge, just go the J, you'll get more power and they're about as driveable as one other. you can run a pp on the street, it's just not pleasant at low speed, like any ultra worked na motor really

ok now for a serious suggestion - how about an L20 from a datsun 200B? cameron who i bought my ke25 from used to have one of these in a ke30, and he said it was a friggin torque monster! and lets face it, a 200b engine is going to be cheap, easy to work on yourself, and you can probably get some decent go fast bits for it because it's a datsun and thats what datsun people do. it's a good idea if you want to go old skool. in fact, i can't fit a 12A, maybe i'll do one of these instead and if i could afford it, a rwd 4g63 would be really nice :P
