  1. Balancing will give you smoother, cleaner revving engine. It will cost about 200 bucks on top of the cost of the rebuild but isn't hugely necessary. To balance, they remove mass from each piston-rod-gudgeon pin assembly to match. Your machinist should be able to supply everything you need, pistons, VRS kit etc. I used API Engines in Lonsdale, Adelaide, but I'm now going to TW Engineering in St Agnes for my work. Top dudes.
  2. Not quite. It burns slower and in a more controlled fashion. explosions or faster burn just creates overly high cylinder pressures. this tech moderator is under his bonnet after doing a head gasket! Also, you can run more advance because it is a slower more controlled burn. Sounds counter intuitive, I know, given that you need higher octane in high comp motors to avoid preignition!
  3. Engine builder will measure bores and tell you what needs doing. I'd be expecting a 20thou overbore at least. Pistons will be needed to suit the bore. Engine builder will be able to balance all your rod and piston assemblies. Head can be done by the same engine builder. Block will need only really the rebore and you can have it dipped to clean the shit off it (paint it up nicely). Get new camshaft bearings and welsh plugs. Loctite, just regular thread locker will do. Permatex gasket sealant for the various gaskets. Give the sump a clean with some degreaser. Check the backlash on the oil pump as per the factory manual. Should be fine. Check the FAQ for tips on how to shim it to get more oil pressure. Thats basically it for a good tight running motor.
  4. Exactly right. vagen you should be able to get those power figures out of your motor. There's race 3K's here making 130-140hp at the flywheel without turbos.
  5. Back on topic please otherwise it'll be locked. No need for abuse.
  6. I'd be guessing that the money they spent, she aint an original camaro either, probably all new steel.
  7. Most engine builders would have come across the K series engine so I wouldn't worry about who you go to. They are a very basic motor, especially given that you aren't aiming for more power. Engine builder will be able to tell you what parts you'll need. Pistons will depend on the rebore requirements. There's no need to get silly and put better cranks or rods in if you ane building a stock one. Cam depends on your need for power gains. Head will cost 200-300 for a reco. I just paid someone else to do it, plus I can't grind seats. I built a K engine recently and there are relatively few pitfalls for a beginner. For some reason it was very hard to find the 46.5mm welsh plug at the back of the motor, get ready for a lot of "are you sure it isn't an Imperial size" questions. For gearboxes and lots of other parts, go see Peter Robinson Automotive, Carinish rd Oakleigh. 9544 1162
  8. I'm running 28mm chokes on my Dellortos on my 5K. I can't remember specific jets but they weren't far off those calculated by felix's web page. I got lucky and bought a set that were jetted for a heavily worked 3k, which meant it was very driveable. BUT, getting them dyno tuned (~300 bucks) by a tuner who is good with Dells netted me 50% more power! This is the commonly recommended book for tuning: http://www.amazon.com/Build-Power-Dellorto...o/dp/1903706750 This is good as it details the workings of Dells in reasonable detail, not so much on the tuning: http://www.bevenyoung.com.au/prdt1555.htm
  9. For starters, I'm guessing your value of 175(psi?) is your cylinder compression value? Just keep in mind that this value IS NOT the compression ratio. If you want to calculate your compression ratio, and then work out how to increase it with a head skimming, then you need to take a number of measurements of your bore, stroke, dish and head volumes, piston crown to deck height, Crown to Ring land etc, HG Thickness and then calculate from there. Compression ratio: a Volumetric function Cylinder Pressure: a Pressure function 175 is sounds like a good healthy value. You should talk to your engine builder about how much planing you will need to increase comp ratio.
  10. Any sidedrafts, dellortos or su's will give good gains. Rebuild them properly, jet them properly and get them dyno tuned.
  11. I spent about 2k and did most of the work myself to get 68.8rwkw. A couple of hundred more to get some porting done and I would easily break 100hp. That 2k included a fully rebuilt and balanced 5K, twin dellortos, dyno tune, 5 speed, camshaft, etc. You could save some money here and there as well, but you won't make that power.
  12. Best thing to do is just PM the people as you find their pics and request their permission to use. On the same note, you should put pictureson the net without considering the possibility that it will get used elsewhere.
  13. So you're asking people to go to your site, trawl through until they find pics you've posted and give permission to use it?
  14. http://www.rolaclub.com/ And even more risky is typing it in, hitting enter and then walking away to make a coffee when you're at work.....
  15. Yes you will definitely need dyno time. You may get them in and running, maybe even driveable, but for the performance you'll need a tune. Mine went from 45kw to 68kw, 50%more power.

    Found!

I had a car stolen and subsequently dumped in rosewater many years ago as well.
  17. What's your budget. You'd be looking at 1000 bucks for a rebuild, done on the cheap, but done properly. You can probably pick up a warm to hot 4K for that, but you might be waiting a while. In Australia at least, it's not like worked K engines come up all the time.
  18. yeh these things are nuts. There's been a few people making them over the years.... Very cool.
  19. Interesting. Learned some new shit. Sounds like a convoluted way of doing it to me!
  20. From the other thread that I closed: First, what motor. You wont get far without some specifics. Second, how do you no there is no spark? Is it just not sparking or have you pulled a plug out and wired it up to test while you crank it?

    Spotted

Looks tough Luke (And I don't dig ke70's!). Just needs a bit of a height reduction!
  22. Firstly, what motor. You wont get far without some specifics. Secondly what car. Thirdly, how do you no there is no spark? Is it just not sparking or have you pulled a plug out and wired it up to test while you crank it? Edit - Thread closed, you already have an open one in the AExx section.
  23. ^^^^^^^^ Read those two lines right there. That's probably as good as you'll get with lots of $$$$$
  24. CA18s run no gasket on the sump, just silicon from the factory. Won't work on a K though.
  25. Mate, your 5K should have an electronic dizzy on it, no need for points. I'll look up the spec and get back to you though.
