Alright guys and girlies.

 

 

I spoke to a random engineer though I think he might be a backyard one.. He claims that I would need a blue plate for my 1981 KE55 Hardtop if I put a 5k in it?

 

I am 17 this year, and would rather 5k over my 4k anyday.

 

 

Can anyone actually clear this up? Do I NEED a blue plate? I might give a few engineers and QLD transport a ring sooner or later again and hassle the shit out of them to actually see if I can get it without a mod plate..

 

I've also heard other Rollaclub members say that I don't have to, though I want a little few more suggestions..

I know in Canberra you cannot legally put a 5K in a KE55 without engineering...they are something like 2.5cc too big...they JUST don't make it.

 

Register it with the 4K, then swap...the chances of a cop noticing when you get pulled over is VERY slim...

 

Unless you don't wanna take chances, then engineer it

If I do get it blue plated, I cannot drive it.

 

 

New rules say if I get the engine mod that needs a blue plate, I cannot drive it. =(

it's all down to interpretation of the engineer...i've had 2 tell me i can swap a 3k for a 5k without an engineers cert (blue plate), while another one has told me i need to get one.

Admittedly my car is a ke70, but i had mine roadworthied and registered (from unroadworthy and unregistered) with a 5k about two months ago. I can't give you the actual reason why, but I'm almost 100% sure its sweet. I even had the chick come out of the office and inspect my engine code and she just said 'oh, it must have had a new engine put in it at some time- your engine code is different to your vin'

Still, check with the transport department.

here i am told by a reliable source,

That if you have the right papers proving it is from the

same engine series etc, that you can put one in a Ke20.

 

So i assume it may be allowed in a 55, although your rules may be different.

 

I say get it reg'd then drop it in afterwards (thats what i will be doing because

of our stupid P laws) :)

It is stated in the big book that my engineer has, that many 'same family motors' are allowed to be put in to various cars without a mod plate.

 

eg 202 into lj torana

 

In this big book it actually lists the allowable same family motors for each car, from memory the 5k was allowed, but to be sure you need to consult an engineer, cos that was a few years ago.

 

even if the engineer is to busy, ask him if you can have a look through the book.

I think it was called 'code of practice for light vehicle modification', or something similar.

I have done a few engine changes now in my car. I rock up to department of transport with car and go old motor died and a mechanic replaced it with anew one. I need to up date details they come out read number BANG mtoro was legal 5K in KE30.

 

I also did a4K in ke30 paid rego soon as eftpos was accepted said OH i need to update engine number again used the motor dies story involving a Mechanic swapping it for me and wham easy as 2min later my car had a 4K in it legally.

 

KE70 are easy to get a 5K in legally as the KE74 was stock with a 5K so anywhere you can do this no mod plates. You can also play with the fact KE55/30 got T series motors so I think with that book mentioned above 5K will bolt in legally.

 

Also there is a power figure. a 3K-B puts out I think it was 4KW more than a 5K SO some states where they limit the motor to its power out put for the swap use this excuse and it will pass. Think that is in Vic they do that.

 

Can be done easy. Mates gemini has a jacaroo motor bored and SC12 on it legal no mod plates due to "same family motor" so 5K if you present your self correctly be polite and don't hassle make car tidy clean and stock looking will get a 5K in no worries with no blue plate.

Geminis came out with a foctory 2L and who is gonna know that his engine is bored :)

Anything can be slipped through. My last KE55 had a 5K in it, and it passed rego because no one noticed.

 

Legally (in ACT) a 5K into ANY corolla needs to be engineered.

 

It doesn't matter what engine came out of what, and what it is in now, the rules are based on the increase in percentage from factory spec engine (in ACT) so if your car came with a 3K, you can only use an engine that is 15% bigger than 3K. If it's a 4K, 15% is JUST smaller than a 5K, so technically it is not legal.

 

I personally don't care, and have risked it many times, along with a SC'd 5K in a car that came with a 3K, so it just depends on how much you want to risk.

Many many moons ago in Vic, if it was under 1600cc it was ok. So my KE35 was registered legally with a 5k. Insurance was ok with it as well - even running the twins etc was ok :)

I would have to strongly agree with nissan feeling and cam, I'm all the time down at DOT getting engine numbers changed with rolla's (larger capacity engines), i have never ever had a problem, DOT has never told me i have had to get a mod plate, just to be on the safe side, give em a ring. Laws always change!
