Nice! How does it go compared to the MR2?
-
Today me and my friend decided to finish off the pedal box, here's how that went: Original steering column mount: Steering column mount removed: New steering column mount made: My friend welding it on: I don't actually have a pic of the finished product but here's a comparison (though not a very good one) of how it sits in the car: Original pedal box (you can see the steering column pushed all the way to the right, preventing the steering column cover thingy from fitting on): Modified pedal box (now the steering column is straight, thus the steering column cover thing fits on):

Yeah where is this new car of yours?

Haha not likely! It took so long to make. If I had to do it again I would just buy a universal 3-gauge panel and screw it to the dash, cheaper, easier and probably wouldn't look too bad either.

Thanks Dave. I can understand why you didn't make one, it took so much effort. I spent like 3 days making this one, it's not really worth it. Anyway here's some pics of what I did today: Gauges installed: Switch panel finished(missing one fuse because I blew it when I was testing the circuits): Taking the pedal box out for the 2nd time :bash:: Pedal box out: Hole for clutch master: This afternoon I took the T18 pedal box around to where my friend works so we could weld on a new bracket for the steering column to bolt to, but just as we were ready to cut the bracket and weld on the new section the power went out lol. So I left it there and he said he'd do it one day after work, he's such a nice guy!

I had another go at this today, it isn't the ignition barrel because I unplugged it and then ran wires from the pins inside the plug to connect the circuits. I could get the dash accessories to come on, the ignition to come on (well the oil pressure/charge lights on the dash came on so I'm guessing that was the ignition circuit working), and I could get the starter motor to turn over as well. BUT the problem was that I could not get them all to work at once. I could get the accessories to come one, the ignition to come on, but with those 2 circuits connected the starter motor would not turn when I connected the starter motor pins inside the plug. Then I disconnected the accessories and ignition circuits and ran a wire from the starter motor pins and the starter motor would turn over, but then the ignition circuit would not work. And occasionally the starter motor would turn over when I connected the ignition pins inside the plug. What a pain in the butt! I'm guessing the ignition and starter motor wires have started to short out on each other somewhere because the car wasn't doing this before. I'll just have to try and fix it when I come down next, which is like 7 weeks away :bash:

^That was excellent!

Definitely! Track days would be awesome.

Went to move the AE82 this afternoon, and it wouldn't go. So I had to push it with flat tyres :lolcry: Something is wrong with the starter/ignition wiring and it was doing funny things when I was trying to start it. In other news I finished my dash cluster surround: (It looks all wonky in the photo but I think that's just the light, I'll get a pic of it installed soon) It holds 3 gauges and 2 LED warning lights. And tomorrow I'm finally getting the T18 pedal box welded up so the steering column lines up properly.

Torque wrench? Just buy one from Repco. I think they have the Warren & Brown ones which are supposed to be really good.

Alright I'm doing that tomorrow! Thanks for the help Altezzaclub.

Hey RC! So this afternoon I tried to start my recently acquired AE82 4AGE bigport, it started fine but after about a minute of the engine running the starter motor re-engaged the ring gear and I had to turn the engine off. I then tried to start the engine again and the starter motor was engaging and cranking the engine when the key was turned to the 'ON' position instead of the 'START' position, and the engine would not start. So I tried turning the key one notch further to the 'START' position and the starter motor stopped. I tried this numerous times with varying results, occasionally the starter would not crank when the key was in either position, and occasionally the starter would just make a really loud ticking sound. I had a quick look at the wiring for the starter but everything seemed intact and it was getting dark so I gave up. Someone seems to have installed a relay into the starter circuit and I suspect this may be the problem, though I don't quite understand the relay circuit so I'm not sure how to attack it. Tomorrow I plan on pulling the exhaust off and having a look at the starter motor and the wiring, so any suggestions on possible causes of the problem would be great! The only other thing I could thing of that's causing the problem is the ignition switch, it is quite worn and the key can be removed while in the 'ON' and 'ACC' postion. Has anyone had problems with the ignition switch before, do they short out sometimes? If anyone knows what it might be I'd love to hear your ideas. Thanks!

Can't believe how much of a score this was! Looks like so much fun too.

You can have pinks for the AE82 once I've taken the engine out, deal? Okay sweet.

I just realised I have to wait until the semester is over to start work on it anyway :( dayummmmm

Yeah well my engine is red! And red defeats racing beige.

Hey Willis I challenge you to see who can finish their 4A conversion first?
-
That is a fair bit now that I think about it, we'll have to race them when I get this finished! Yours would probs be twice as fast. Should have, if there is a cruise or something soon you'll have to take me for a spin. Get that cold start injector and o2 sensor already!

The twin cam wheel is very worn, if I don't end up using it you can have it. Yeah yours was the one I was referring to, it is way quicker. Actually I went in another 4AGE KE70 when I was looking to buy one few months ago, it was another orange KE70 with a black-top 20v which seemed super quick, but the guy was absolutely flooring it. This 4A that I have is still infinity times better than the 4K lol, but I was expecting a bit more from it. Turbo would be super cool but it can wait, maybe next year?

Neat car, the quadlights look really good!

Pretty sure they have an electronic distributor as well?

I got that AE82 home after a very boring drive from Byron to Brisbane and then back with a car trailer. So the car was a project car that never really got finished, the engine was rebuilt but sat for a year or so and never really went anywhere. The car itself hasn't been registered since 2008. This afternoon I started it up and took it for a little spin around the block after it had warmed up. The car dove fine, but the brakes were seized and not many of the electrics worked which doesn't really matter because I won't be needing those anyway. I didn't really rev it very hard nor go very fast, due to not having brakes, but the car didn't really seem very quick. I was expecting it to have a bit more go, might need to do some engine mods later on? :hmm: Though I've only been in a 4AGE powered car once before and I don't remember it so maybe I was expecting too much from a 1.6 litre engine. Other than that and the smoke coming from burnt oil on the exhaust the engine seemed fine. Here's some pics of the car: Twincam wheel!! 4AGE bigport And then I put some switches in, missile switches add 10hp per switch. And I've almost finished off the gauge panel, just need to sand it up and paint it. I think I'm going to wait until mid year break to do the engine swap, as I've only got a few more days of holidays before I go back to uni and I'll never get it done in time. I might just weld a new steering column bracket onto the pedal box and finish off the dash and switch panel before uni starts again.

I like that Varex! Is it legal?
