I'm not too sure how it works with the carb, but with the EFI car I did it on, I pulled off the intake hose which connected to the Throttlebody, so i could see the butterfly inside it. I had quite a bit of slack in the thorottle cable, so i tightened the cable to the point where I could only a few mm play either direction before the butterfly would begin to open. I'm not sure if a carb would work in a similar way, best to ask someone with a 4a-FC, or get hold of a gregories manual which covers the 88-94 rolla's.
If you're looking to stay with the same generation of rolla's, Ultima/RV would be a good choice as you have the 7A-FE motor, which has a decent torque curve and would be a good daily, auto or manual. Or find a SX/GTi with a healthy 'redtop' 4A-GE, they have more than enough poke for a daily driver, and there is modding potential. You can easily find later model aus spec rolla's with a 7A-FE, but if you want anything post 91/92 with a 4A-GE, it'll have to be an import or a conversion. Either motor is a good choice and will be an improvement over the 4A-FC.
