If it has a factory tacho dash you can splice into the factory tach wire on the back of the dash, So is yours the chevy nova?, like to see pics if it is as i have only seen the AE82 style chevy nova.

^^^^^ Yep, Sounds exactly like heat loss/resistance (voltage drop), Also try puttin a relay on if you already havn't (Can't see it noted) as it will sometimes fix the problem.
