  1. I bought this pedal box a few years ago and was told it was for a ke30. It seems it might not be. Is anyone able to identify it? Maybe another ke? Thanks.
  2. The reason the eBay one is so expensive is that they don't make this one any more. (pbr) Buy a rebuild kit and have a go. Mine was leaking the same as yours. My skill level is very basic and I managed to make it work it again. I have one for sale on gumtree if you're desperate, but I think you'll be fine with the one you have.
  3. Thanks for the awesome advice. I made the graph. It took 8 minutes to get from 9 C to 80 C and then just hovered around 77 to 80. The oem temp gauge sits on about 90% at 80c. I just checked it after a freeway run, and it was still at 80C. It looks like I sorted the overheating. I was watching for bubbles. There were no continuous bubbles but maybe 3 'burbs' over ten minutes. Hopefully that's not a bad sign. Years ago when sky blue Datsun stanzas were uncool for a 20 YO, I paid a mechanic a weeks wages to find a non exisitant overheating problem. After he'd replaced everything, and the gauge still read high, he said the gauge must be faulty. Grrr.
  4. Thanks guys. That makes sense. It'll be good to see if it's a cooling issue or a gauge issue.
  5. I found this on an old thread about the difference between 4k and 5k temp senders. With my motor being a 4k/5k hybrid, maybe my temp is fine and I just have the wrong sender. "When I chucked my 5K into my KE30 I had to swap the senders over. The temp kept reading really high as if it was overheating but it wasn't. There must be a real reason, not cosmetic, as to why Toyota did this."
  6. Do the vdo gauges run off the sender I'm using or do they need their own sender? Is there a safe way to stick a thermometer in the coolant when it's hot?
  7. So I took the ke35 for a longer drive than usual the other night. On the way home, I sat on 90kmh for about 40 minutes in the pouring rain. Everything seemed fine until I got home and noticed the steam pouring out from the side of the bonnet. The overflow tank was full and bubbling away. The temp gauge was on about 10%, which is where it normally sits. The next morning I checked the coolant level in the radiator and of course it was low. I checked the plugs looking for a clean one, wondering if I'd blown the head gasket. All ok here. I flushed the radiator, changed the thermostat and put a new cap on the radiator. The old cap was really loose when compared to the new one, so I assumed this was the problem. Driving around again, it seems fine, but I haven't had it on the freeeway. The temp gauge was still on 10%. I wondered why the temp gauge never went up when it was bubbling away. So now I've replaced the temp sensor and instead of sitting on 10%, it's now sitting on 90%. Now I don't know if it's actually running hot all the time or if there's nothing to worry about. How can I tell where the temperature is really at? Sorry for the novel. Thanks. 4k/5k head. Trimatic.
  8. I've read about that. It was a way to trick the cops so you didn't get a defect notice for not having every factory.
  9. I had a play and it's definatley not working so I swapped it with a ratty one from another distributor I have. Also doesn't work. I've been giving the engine a birthday to try and get rid of the vacuum leaks. It seems to be never ending. Redid the manifold gasket, big improvement. Replaced the vacuum hoses, huge improvement. Almost there but still not happy which is why I was looking at the vacuum advance. Is it possible to buy a new vacuum advance without buying a new distributor, or can they be repaired? Thanks
  10. Thanks. I'll have a play with it tonight.
  11. Just wondering if sucking on the vacuum advance hose would be enough to test the diaphragm or if I need a vacuum pump? (4k distributor) I'm not getting any movement. Thanks.
  12. The ke30 and ke35 has two different dashes. The late ones might have the ke55 dash. I received the wrong one originally which they were happy to swap. You can buy them direct from Protectomat in Perth too.
  13. I think Mackay Hoses makes the correct ones.
  14. I just saw an ad for the rare as hens teeth left side ke35 mirror, complete with the rubber gasket on gumtree. Maybe someone is interested. It took me a year to find one of these. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/kardinya/auto-body-parts/left-hand-side-wing-mirror-corolla-datsun-gemini/1170939595
  15. Or Rakuten. Heaps of Japanese shops sell online here. https://global.rakuten.com/en/category/404390/
  16. With regards to running lean, I think you can do that with any carby if it's not adjusted right. It sounds like you need to do the basic tuneup from the start, as per factory specs. I'm guessing that your timing is out. My jets are resized so I can give you a bit of advise on that one. I'm running a 4k block, 5k head with extractors. The compression is very high. It's a 3 speed trimatic auto box so not known for being too responsive with a 4k. I have a standard Aisan carby. With the standard jets, it's foot to the floor all the time, and a bit sluggish. With the jets resized (one size up from memory but maybe a bit more) my foot is hardly touching the accelerator, and the off the mark acceleration is excellent. Once I get to about 80kmh, it takes a while to get to 100kmh though. The fuel economy is crap. For the auto, I was advised against bike carbs/weber etc. If you've got a manual box, I'm not sure how rejetting would compare to swapping the carby for a weber or bike carbs though.
  17. My brother in law has worked for a radiator company for 20 years. His advice for coolant was don't use cheap stuff and never mix different ones, even within the same brand.
  18. Mine does the same. I Googled it last year and it seemed pretty common with old cars. The consensus seemed to be not to worry about. The large puddle of ATF that mine left on the garage floor when I got home the other day concerns me more.
  19. I wondered that too. No log books. It's actually changed to 9000km max per year. The policy is SGIO classic car insurance. (WA company)
  20. That sounds like a good outcome. Last year Shannons auctioned a ke35 for $6100. I told my insurance co about this and they were happy to raise my agreed value from $3500 to $6000 based on this, for an extra $25 per year. It seems that's auctions might be the basis for how they work out the value of old cars.
  21. 12.9 would scare the crap out of you in a 40 year old corolla. My 4k/5k hybrid trimatic ke35 does the 1/4 in 21 seconds (measured using an app).
  22. Does anyone know if a ke30 windscreen fits a ke35 hardtop? I'm getting conflicting info when I search for this? thanks
  23. I think the stripes down the side are original. The bonnet stripe isn't.
  24. Here are some photos of how an old school carby specialist reconfigured my vacuum hoses a couple of years ago when he rejetted the carby. The car runs really sweet with good acceleration. It's an auto.
