Finished stripping the bonnet today before giving it a coat of etch, and taking it round to my mates place.

Thanks mate, hopefully ! It won't be perfect but at least I have improved things. It's been good to hone my skills so my next project is a step better. Today's weather in Melbourne was beautiful ! :jamie: I spot filled a little more, then rubbed back and layed down some highfill. I also began to baremetal the back of the bonnet and will continue this tomorrow then etch prime. My mate who is now into his second car re-build and respray is going to give the centre of the bonnet a go for me, this should improve things as he has a reasonable hand for repairs now.

I have spot filled a few pockmarks in the doors, now I'm just waiting on the compressor. It's frustrating because I can't progress further untill I have it !

Hey guys, today I etch primed the bits I stripped yesterday. Suprisingly orange peel does not seem to be much of an issue even though it was reasonably cold when I was spraying. I used a direct drive compressor my cousin loaned me a while back because I still don't have my mates back. The thing was absolutely hopeless ! The pressure regulator was terrible and so I had it wound out completely at apparantley 100psi line pressure! lol It also struggled to keep up with the small amount of painting I was doing, I often had to pause to let it catch up. I hope it does'nt die before I get the other one back, I don't really want to buy my cousin a new one (even though it would be dirt cheap). Yesterday I received my new dash pad in the mail, cheers Raven  I'm pretty stoked because my mates have just bought an awesome sandblasting cabinet, so I will be able to do all my door hinges and my fuel flap hinge. Should be an intersting little job, save a bit of cash and it sure beats hand sanding them !

I have now stripped the gutters and down the C pillars. Unfortunately my mate has taken his compressor back for a bit so this limits what I can do. The weather is slowly turning crap in Melbourne at the moment which makes things difficult for paint and panel in my outdoor work area. Due to this I'm trying to keep things moving as much as possible.

I'm simply curious to know what will fit in the gaurds, so I have an idea of what sizes are available to me when I have more serious amounts of power.

Cheers mate.

Front of doorjams stripped and etch primed;

Interested to hear more about this head. I would not have thought Yella Terra ever built anything for a K motor!

Sweet Crown mate, what an awesome cruiser ! :(

LOL Cheers mate, the mower is probably tougher than the old 3k ! (Something to fix when I have rego) A mate welded up the gaurd for me at his work yesterday, but I will need to get him to redo some of it. (When I ground back the welds there was a few holes) I spose the thin rusy steel makes things difficult. I stripped the front of the doorjams today (where the hinges bolt in). Slowly getting there ! I need to keep moving so I can be ready for topcoat soon as the weather slowly turns to shit. Having the semester off because of my operation means I have plenty of time to work on the car which is nice (not much money though becuase I can't go back to work yet).

It's staying white mate. When I started I was only going to touchup a few problem areas. In the first stage of panelwork the topcoat reacted and so I had to rub it all back. When I started rubing the shell back it gradually turned into a more complete respray. The engine bay wont be touched for a while too so that's another reason it is staying white.

Looking good Chris. It's nice to see the build summarised in one page.

Good movie. My respect for Eric Bana increased after discovering his history with the car, and that he was not simply another rich celebrity that binged a nice car.

How straight is the car ? How much rust ? If you are paying someone you really need to go get a qoute or two to see what you are up for. Without knowing the extent of prepwork needed you can't really get a firm idea. Without seeing the car stripped back you don't know how much hidden rust or dodgy repairs are really there, and how much time and effort will be required to fix it.

Look up a place called "The Dashboard Doctor". I'm starting to wish I paid to get mine reco'd there rather than buying a NOS one...

Hey guys, Here are a few pics from recent efforts; I shrunk a few areas round at a mates place and then filled and highfilled the doors, right gaurd and bootlid. They will all need a rub back and another coat (Pics soon). Thanks to the Vic wreckers thread I manged to pickup another left gaurd so I have begun stripping it and will weld it at a mates work tomorrow. Cheers, Dougal

Thats round my area  Up for a cruise with you as well Evan when my 20 is on the road !

Looking good mate. Funny that, some of the most powerful engines in the world are "dinosaur" pushrod engines! What's a top fuel dragster run ?

Hey Jordy, I'm in Nunawading.

Yesterday I was at Pick-A-Part Campbellfield and asked about buying a 5k. The deal is you you remove it yourself from a Liteace/Townnace etc with the engine crane they provide, and it will cost you $215 with all parts ie; manifolds, alternator, air con if applicable etc. I was quite happy to hear this because elsewhere I have seen them for anywhere between $350 and $550. I would go for a 5 speed if I were you to drop the freeway revs (without the need for a tall diff ratio) and then you can retain good pace off the line (assuming you have a short diff ratio). Cheers, Dougal

No one said it's a perfect solution, more a cheap option between an LSD and an open diff. Sure if you want something better, install another diff with a proper LSD centre. LSD centres for Corolla diffs are either rare as hens teeth or quite costly, so most people who upgrade choose another diff.
-
The other option you have is a "spring locker" setup that a place called Tayell Automotive do in Melbourne. 3 Griffith Ave, Bentleigh East, VIC p: (03) 95795529 Old discussion thread Cheers, Dougal

Grabbed the front left gaurd off it today, not a bad car ! I ran into another bloke there who was taking the drivers door, and is in the process of respraying and dropping a rotor in a '71 KE20. I told him to jump on rollaclub. Lol the bloke at the counter didn't know what hit him, he was like "What's with all the people grabbing parts off that orange car ? Is it a gemmy or something?" "Nah mate its a KE20 corolla, I had a tip-off about it". LOL I felt like I got a bit of a bargain at $57 for a gaurd.

Yeah fair call, we all get to that stage don't we !
