Ok so it has finally happened I have managed to get hold of a "complete" ac system for the Princess' rolla. When I say "complete" it was "yeah mate its all there" on the phone, "except for the compressor bracket" when I travel 75 kms and land on site. So what I need from you my Corolla Comrades is this. 1. Does anyone out there have a suitable bracket for said compressor. That they are willing to part with. 2. Does anyone have diagrams or instructions for the installation of the system. 3. Can anyone tell me if in their infinite wisdom did Toyota prewire Ke55s for the ac installation. 4. Are there any decent pics of an ac system that i might be able to use for installation purposes. Coz at the moment its a giant mechanical jigsaw puzzle in a bunch of crates. All help is greatly appreciated and is going to a worthy cause. Of making me the best Dad ever!!!

Starts and runs. Have to fuel up carby to start though
Big G replied to RatherMad's topic in KExx Corolla Discussion
As the car runs after you put fuel into the carby the problem could be in the start and idle circuit. Take the top off the air cleaner and look down the carby manually rotate the throttle. There should be a solid stream of fuel coming into the carby. If not your idle jet could be blocked or the accelerator pump is not forcing fuel through the carby. The other option could be the fuel shut off solenoid is not functioning and wont let the fuel into the start circuit. To test it disconnect the single wire unscrew the unit from the carby body. Touch the wire on the positive terminal of the battery and the body of the unit to ground you should see the plunger of the solenoid move in and out as you make and break the contacts there should be an audible click as it operates. If the unit doesn't work swap it out and see how you go.- 4 replies

Good one Taz now you remember you wrote that tutorial. Bit of dejavu. I still havent done my daughters yet. Trying to get the keys from her hot little socialising grip is proving difficult.

don't rangehoods clean themselves??? Been there done that way to many times.

Well that seems all too simple. In fact I will try your theory and get a few ciders into me then give it a crack and see how we go.

KE30 3k - Slow starter turnover - even with a jump
Big G replied to RatherMad's topic in Car Electrical
That starting and then snuffing out sounds like it might be the ballast resistor has open circuited. Short out the terminals with a wire bridge and give it a try. You can run the engine without the ballast resistor in circuit but it will eventually toast the points.- 11 replies

Hey Gurus So the Princess' rolla has been making a noise that sounds like a noisy fan belt. Turns out the noise is coming from the tappet area. So i looked up the "how to" section (good explanation Taz btw). I just want o make sure I have it right the compression stroke is when the rocker gear is floppy for want of a better word. Thats when you set the values. I can't believe I can't remember how to do this. I must have done it a couple of hundred times when I worked in the import shop...

Pull the plugs out squirt some oil down the hole and turn it over quite a few times by hand to get the bores well lubricated. Put the plugs back in and give it a spin with the starter motor. If she has sat for ten years the chances of the bore being marked by the rings sitting in the same place would be pretty high.- 11 replies

Well this is excellent news. I don't feel so alone now. We should start a support group for the owners of soot spittin rollas. Thanks for your input guys it is much appreciated.
-
There is a guy on gumtree selling a complete running engine for $210. The suburb is Eagleby which is halfway between Brissy and the GC.
-
So further into this issue is the soot build up in the exhaust pipe a symptom of running too rich coz while she runs well I wonder if the carby is set up perfectly or do we have to say good enough is good enough considering the age of these beauties.

Have you proved the lamps are functional. They could have all popped at once. We sometimes overlook the simple things and go straight to something complicated and finally end up where we should have started. We can be victims of our knowledge.

She does reverse it in for a fast exit when she starts early I'm hoping sugar soap will get it off the back wall of the garage. I was hoping it would be something like you have described and not some annoying carby issue. Thanks for your help.

So here is the issue I started the Princess' rolla early on Saturday morning let it warm up and usual down she came jumped in and off to work she sped. After the car was out of the garage I noticed a nasty splattery stain on the floor and on the inside of the roller door and on the back wall of the garage from when she reverses in for a quick getaway. It doesn't seem to be oil but more like a moisture and soot mixture. I checked the water and oil levels on her return and all seemed in order. So any ideas of what this may be and how to remedy it would be greatly appreciated.

So what you are saying is that it's not a straight forward swap. So realistically I should be trying to locate a GTI or SX unit to make life easier.

What did you own/drive before getting your Corolla?
Big G replied to mariaevinne's topic in General Discussion
Mine was a TA22 Celica. It had a Peter Williamson ex race engine with a yamaha head that I scored by chance. I ran 40mm side draft webbers and I decked it out like a GT clone coz my old man worked with a guy whose father was the Australian spare parts manager for Toyota at the time. The stuff I got and the prices I paid were amazing. In the 80s you could go to Surfers Paradise raceway on open days and do laps and do quarters and get them timed and run through a speed trap. I have a certificate with my top speed of 128mph somewhere. I loved that car and those days of my misspent youth. -
Good one Hiro. You are so right...and I am so visually impaired at that hour of the day. My bad.

That is super granny spec in the engine bay area all the vac lines and filters are all place still. Do you have a mod plate for that silver foil. Take a pic of the ID plates on the fire wall and as Banjo said do you know her history.
-
If you want that granny spec look definitely go the originals. they are rare as they were an optional extra in the day. I got one for my daughters hardtop and it looks great. Make sure it comes with the rubber gasket that goes between the mirror and the door panel.
-
I insured the Princess' KE55 hardtop with shannons for $6500 and she gets the car back in the event of a write off. She is on the policy as a first year driver and the premium is $48 dollars a month. They didnt bat an eye about the insured value. Hopefully we wont have to test out how good they really are...
-
And...the xx KE55 came with colour coded bumpers that are the extended type.
-
Thats how you could tell the difference between a 30 and a 55 at a glance in the days when rollas roamed the streets in herds.
