  1. Hey rolla gurus So the summer is on its way and to the Princess's disgust I have yet to locate an Ac system for her 55 hardtop. So the next best thing is to add another rolla to her stable. She likes the AE93 as her older brother had one as his first car a few years ago. He sold it to buy a wrx. I could of kicked his arse and he is now regretting it. So the as rare as they are getting now it is even harder to get one with Ac. So the big question is can an Ac system from an AE92 be easily fitted into an AE93 or do I have to source one from an SX or a GTI?
  2. OK so now I can see the relationship between the points gap and the timing now that you have added a worn rubbing block into the equation. So if I had replaced the existing points with no wear on the rubbing block then the timing should have been OK as it was originally set with a full rubbing block. The only unanswered question is why would the rubbing block suddenly wear down on a single trip. I know that the adjusting/fixing screw was well hard to undo so I know that it didnt slip. The Princess may have to consider an electronic dizzy set up in the future as suggested by Dave. I will see how it goes for now.
  3. Modern points don't come with the little sachet of grease like in the good old days. But i found some from the 80s in the bottom of my toolbox. It was a vintage year. I used to have a dwell meter but it seems to have vanished over the years of me being out of the car scene. She is running fine now. I was just trying to get my head around the whole incedent.
  4. The points are not that old and really havent travelled that far the princess only travels 20 minutes each way to work each day. The adjustment screw was well hard in position so i don't think it closed coz of that. Maybe the rubbing block has worn down coz they don't make anything like they used to. But i am still baffled about the timing going haywire after i reset the points.
  5. I understand that if the gap changes the timing will go to. But if I restored the points gap to what it was to start with shouldn't the timing go back to the same position it was in before the gap closed and she started to run roughly.
  6. Hey RollaGurus So the Princess decided to take her 55 hardtop for a visit into Brisbane the other day to do whatever it is that teens do. Didnt miss a beat on the way in. Thats were the fun stops. She was following me home, as usual stop start traffic down the freeway. She pulls up beside me and says it is idling roughly. So She stalls a couple of times at traffic lights when in suburbia. Her rage growing with every hiccup and cough. At this stage I'm thinking maybe I wont go home. So she gets home and it stalls dead. I tried to start it but it just wouldnt fire. So straight to the dizzy I go to find the points gap has shrunk considerably. So reset them and turn her over and she fires straight away. All good or so I think. Took her for a run around the block and she was pinging her head off under load. So checked the timing upon my return and it was about 25DBTDC. adjusted it back and she is back to her amicable self. The car... not the Princess. My question is why would the timing suddenly change just by adjusting the points gap to where they started from in the first place, I fail to see the relationship. The points , dizzy cap, rotor and leads are only a monthish old. Any ideas guys???
  7. Well congrates to you and your better half. If you think driving fast cars is a thrill hold on to your hats there is no thrill ride on the planet that can match being a parent. If you can parent with as much passion as you build cars your daughter is gonna be one lucky girl.
  8. They came complete withe the original rubbers. However they were a little brittle so a little care was required handling them but once on the car it was all systems go.
  9. Hey macca I got set of genuine ones. That is left and right for my daughters KE55 from a toyota wreckers out of Blacktown NSW. I think they were $120 the pair. They are always advertising on EBay. Might be worth a look if you wanna keep it original.
  10. So for all of the time and effort to build this beast does anyone know what the output of it was. Or was it a lets see if we can do it just coz we can. In the mid 80s i had a second job working installing engines and gear boxes in an engine import place heaps of cool stuff came in the containers. It was like Christmas when we had to unpack them. But I have a very strong memory of pulling out 2 either 3k or 4k twin came engines.I blinked and they disappeared into the owners private lock up. Then the old mechanic that worked there told me he had been to a place in Japan where there were racks of the things. he said it was like Aladins cave. #Believe it or not.
  11. Hey that looks like a 3KB engine with the twin carbs and original air cleaner. If the engine is the original it will have a factory sporty cam and the head should have big valves. Very collectable these days. don't go dumping it. And you have the factory tacho in the dash also rare. Looks like you are well on your way to a great project looking forward to see some progress pics.
  12. Use your new multimeter to test the ballast resistor isn't open circuit. As it may as well not be there if it is busted.
  13. I was certainly relived when she was up and running. I will get a condenser next time I m at SCA. That way I know its all done. And peace will be restored to the kingdom.
  14. If it has a blown fuse it will never work. Not work intermittently.
  15. Have you noticed if the engine gets rattley when the oil pressure light comes on coz if the oil is thining she will rattle. Have u checked the wiring connection to the sender. It could be a dodgy connection that gets worse with the increase in engine temperature. Or it could be the sender starting to fail. Years ago my girlfriends KE55 had the same issue so I teed in an oil pressure gauge and took note of when the light came on and the pressure value at the time. It was the sender. Swapped it out never a problem again.
  16. I just had a brain wave could the PCV valve have been popped off the carby plate when she backfired yesterday.
  17. In the early nineties one of my apprentices brought all the internals and the heads from a small block back to Oz in his hand luggage on his return from holidays. No one batted an eye lid.
  18. Hey gurus I just put the finishing touches to the disasterous events of yesterday. Set the timing to 10 degrees as suggested by dave. Started with the mixture screw at one and a half turns. Kicked her over and she was a bit better but still sounding sounding lumpy. So when in search of a vac leak put a few more cable ties on the last of the hoses that didnt have one when hey presto I discovered the hose from the PCV valve had come a drift from the carby base plate. Slipped it back on hit the key and away she went. Smooth as. I adjusted the idle back a little. Just as the Princess came on the scene to check on my progress. We rolled her out of the shed down the drive and gunned her as she hit the bitumen. She wound up hard. So for the time being I am in the Princess good books. So I will bask in my glory for as long as i can. I was a bit dissapointed when I opened the package of the points only to find that they no longer supply the little sachet of grease. Sign of the times i guess. On the upside i found one from the eighties in the bottom of my tool box. Bargin. Thanks for all the advice guys.
  19. You guys think those years have passed quickly. Wait until your children come along. They are the biggest vacuums of your time you will ever encounter. and you should enjoy every minute of it.
  20. I just couldn t think of the relationship between advancing the dizzy and carby and there it is... the vacuum line. I will give that a crack this arvo. Fingers crossed that will fix my issue. I will surely be back if it doesnt. Buccan is on the southside halfway to the GC.
  21. You guys sound all grown up. Houses children jobs. Thats where I was 20 ish years ago. Its the circle of life here I am back working on cars again. This time they aren't even mine.
  22. Hey Guys So I picked up the dizzy cap rotor button points and leads this arvo. Knowing the Princess has the day off tomorrow I thought I will swap it all out. How hard can it be. The answer to that is not hard at all. Until i tried to start her up. She coughed and spluttered and backfiredthrough the carby. So I shut her down and started looking for my mistake. Aaah lead 2 and 3 swapped over. Quick switcharroo and hit the key again she started and idled so I jumped in and rolled her down the driveway out onto the street and ....no power...so back to the shed.Looking looking for my next mistake......points set using the thou value on the feeler gauge and not the mm.....newbie error....reset them and away we go. Now this is where it gets mental. I kicked her over and the timing went through the roof.....she revved her arse off. So out comes the timing light it was like 20 degrees....so wound it back to 8 ish and it started to idle like she had a square cam in her guts. So long story short to get it to run the idle is wound up a bit to stop her stalling when you put her in gear. When driving she goes hard but idling she is rough. So what the hell is going on. I am baffled. Any donations of advice are tax deductible.
  23. You should probably take it apart hoses and all and give it a good spray and soak in degreaser to remove all the oil based products. then give it a good clean with fresh water allow it to dry and put it all back together and see how it performs after that. If you have a lot of blow by it might have to be a regular maintenance thing. Remember that vapourised oil is super sticky when it returns to a liquid it clings to everything. So clean the whole system.
  24. I worked out why I couldn't upload any pics last night...the Princess and her sister have sucked the last gasp of internet that I had. So its off to super cheap to get me some dizzy bits. I know I will probably have to order them. Thanks guys. PS. When the Princess was at work yesterday some late twenties dude approached her and said if she ever wanted to sell the rolla he would be keen at 8k.
