Sometimes, brute force is the only way. :y: I've been told the Irwin Easy-Out set available cheaply from Bunnings is a worthwhile investment but so far managed with what I have. On the 'want' list though!

Looks great Seb! I'll bet it sounds good & is a blast to drive too! What race series are you & your Dad competing in?

Is your battery secured down properly & the leads firmly attached to it?

Blue Thing: The Daily / Motorkhana Hack (Now Efi)
carbonboy replied to carbonboy's topic in Rollaclub Rides
 I know, why couldn't it just be the daily that I don't hate enough to send to scrap?!? Oh well, we'll see how this goes.- 539 replies

I promised myself that I wouldn't spend more time & money than I had to on my AE80 hatch. Known as Blue Thing, she was intended to get me from A to B while my Twin Cam build was going on. Long story short, things have changed a fair bit & while updates regarding BT were included in my Project Car thread, I think it's hit the point where it needs it's own. At the Picnic at Hanging Rock Car Show in mid-February. For a bit of information & back-story, click these links: Page 1 Page 14 Page 16 Page 19 Page 26 Page 29 In a nutshell, this car was as base model as you can get. Whenever anything breaks/wears out, they are replaced with Twin Cam parts, meaning instant upgrade for minimal cost. Recently through the TCCAV, the opportunity to have a go at a CHEAP form of competitive motor-sport came about. Small problem, no race-car. Bugger it, do it in the daily. Practicing Racing Going Racing So, now Blue Thing can stop invading Gokai's thread & I'll keep all future updates posted here. Plans are already in motion for some fun times ahead. :jamie:

Some slightly adjusted results from the event came through today. I have been placed into Second in the Novice category, being narrowly pipped by Redwarf's ol' mate in his Civic. Unfortunately one of our club members who initially placed First in this category has been pulled back to Fourth, but still a commendable result! I gotta say though, I love motor-sport where a mid-80's Peugeot 205 can beat (outright, no handicap) a new-ish WRX STI & an Evo VI. On dirt. :D

Keep at it man, it will get there. Hope things are going well with the family unit. Agreed on Supercheap, I've given up getting parts from them & stick to generic stuff like degreaser, light bulbs etc. Not just the lack of service, the lack of automotive knowledge the staff in my area seem to possess. :bash: If you can get a file to the rounded off bolt, you might be able to file the edges flat again to the next size down. This might mean that you have to replace it but at least you'll be able to get the bugger out! I just had to do a heap of bolt replacing on BT, persistence, patience & beer got me through! That & a lot of yelling, swearing & throwing things.

You're right about the slag, it was the discolouration of the metal that had me wondering. Could just be my old CRT monitor though!

So, the results just came in, nearly fell off my chair. :blinks: I placed: 11th out of 19 in Class A, 21st out of 51 Outright & 17th on handicap. I knew I wouldn't even come close to winning, but to finish that far away from last, so happy! If you will excuse me, I have some more dust to cough up. I mean, wash down with beer, I mean, filters to clean... ;)

What a day! Blue Thing ran well, except for developing an exhaust leak which was easily fixed by tightening a few manifold bolts that had worked loose. Ran a seperate set of wheels/tyres that were initially set at 25 psi, dropped down the front to 20psi & found turn-in much better with the rear still wanting to slide a little. Felt good for what essentially is standard car. I think I managed to go the whole day without hitting a single flag, as to how fast I was I have absolutely no idea until I get the results via email. I made a point of not checking the time-sheets, I'm there for fun & that's how I want to keep it. I would however like to see the size of the sheep stations/emu farms some of the blokes with the specials are racing for... :blinks: There was a total of 6 courses ran for the day, we'd been hoping for more but a reverse-driving based course did hold up proceedings for a while. No major dramas on the day, except one of our clubs juniour members had a rear wheel cylinder blow, had no brakes & hadn't run enough courses to accumulate VMC points. He kinda needed a car, instead he got Blue Thing. I tried my best for photos, a bit thin on the ground though. Videos are currently uploading, will link then when done.

Galvanised steel elbows & tee-pieces...nice. Edit: Or is that brass that's been soldered? :blinks:

Posted on the club website this evening: Looks like she's a goer! I've been working on BT since this time yesterday, still have to bolt the carburretor back on to the manifold & replace the leaking vac-advance line for the distributor. Hopefully she runs, then set the timing & away we go. Hope to see people down there!

Woohoo! Obviously I'll be posting up here as well to either confirm or cancel. I'm really hoping it goes ahead, otherwise I'm fixing leaky drive-shaft seals & intake/exhaust leaks simply to make BT roadworthy. Could it be the backing plate is slightly bent & rubbing on the rotor Stu?

Looks to me like he'd be better suited to a dirty Neesan.

Does look good, kinda reminds me of an MY07/08 Mitsubishi Outlander though. Not sure if that's a good thing or not... :laff:

Just a reminder about the event this Sunday, we are yet to confirm that it is going ahead due to the possibilty of a Total Fire Ban Day. If this is so, we will be unable to use the grounds. Confirmation of the event will be posted up on the clubs homepage at www.tccav.org.au at 7.00pm on Saturday 23rd February. Got my fingers crossed, now for Blue Things service!

Now I'm no bricklayer, but check out the wall under the steel lintel. Morning! This could be interesting. Suppliers safety warning. Commodores, Falcons, Camrys, we have them all! Only available in white though.

A 9AGE kit from MRP would do the trick nicely, add a 20v head & you're laughing.

Just stirring the stew-pot. Besides, who gives two-$h1ts what I think? :laff:
