nicely done. acrylic is fun to paint, i painted some speaker boxes with my spray gun and acrylic last weekend. forgot how fun it is. plenty of light coats is the key.

Sounds like you are off too a good start! there is talk that you should upgrade the mastercylinder with the sr20 brakes, but i never compared the piston size between ke70 and sr20det brake calipers to confirm this. There are a few easy options around if its required. You gonna make some coilovers from the standard struts? also a note, the LCA bolt diamter is different between ke70 and r31 (ke70 12mm, s13 14mm?). I just drilled out my cross member to 14mm. but note you only need to drill out one side of the cross member, as the bolt is tapered and the thread end of the bolt is the same as ke70. hope this makes sense, but it will once you start assembling. i used R31 bolts in mine. when i swapped back to ae86 stuff i had to machine up a spacer to take up this "drilled out" amount in the cross member. -
Id suggest you jump over to ae86dc and search through some of the old tech articls, i recall a huge thread on putting 86 coilvoers into a ke70. simliar for the rear shocks there is a large thread around where someone went to a parts shop and measured up a stack of shocks that fitted. the shock that i used in the rear was i think called a "FE2 commondore wagon lowered shock" or something. JYB part number 343113. Worked very well with some...er.....modified falcon springs.

no dramas, i was just an amateur working in his parents front driveway... oh also all the s13 coilovers i had were adjustable, but the range of adjustment was way out of the usable range for my little ke70. -

Nah no professional garage here. I was flatout affording petrol back then let alone garages doing work on my cars:P You might want to actually go through an analyse the costs of each option before you decide to make a decision based on cost, as i found that yes the s13 gear could be cheap, but getting good usable setup on the street was not easy. Now admitdly you are talking about a track car, but still, a good setup is a good setup either way i think. The main problem i had, was that these illusive "cheap s13 coilovers" are all pretty rubbish for anything other than driving on a billiard table. sure it was great to get sideways, but alot of the cheaper coilovers i have been exposed too (JIC, BC, other 'JDM' brands), have 2 things in common. Stiff as all buggery springs, coupled with over damped garbage shocks. I went through 3 sets untill i found something that would not rattle my teeth. keeping in mind with s13 gear you are putting coilvoers in that are designed for one car, and putting them into a car that weighs ~70% of the weight. Remember i was on a tight budget back then, spending $500 on a second hand pair of shocks was a few months worth of saving up. so when i failed to get something decent for the 3rd time, i decided to convert back to ae86 gear, and build my own coilovers with reasonable spring rates and good shocks. I managed to sell off all my s13 gear to almost pay for the 86stuff. it was about here i got a real job and had some disposable income.... I picked a spring rate of 6kg/mm, and i went with the cheapest brand name shocks i could get, some KYB excel G shocks designed for the rear of an MR2. I should have gone for a bit softer spring rate, and i coudl feel that ialthough the shocks were good, they did lack a bit of control under heavy bumps. (hey you can't expect miracles for $230/pair!) I also had brand new 86 discs (234x18mm), recod calipers with stainless steel inserts, new qfm hpx? pads, braided brake lines, new tie rod end, new rack ends, camber plates (adapted s13 ones to excel G shocks). it was a VERY smooth setup in both braking and suspension, it had a very sporty feel, yet was compliant. if i did it again (for street use) i think id start with 5kg, and definately up the shock quality. now back to the s13 gear, when i had it, i did make an attempt to measure the bump steer of the setup in the car (if you search ae86dc you may find my calculations), i can't remmebr what the results were, but it was like 1mm of either toe in or out, over ~200mm of travel, 100mm of bump 100mm of droop, which i thought was pretty good. persuming that zero was the goal. The way i woudl attack s13 if i went again, would be to forget any off the shelf coilovers. start with a s13 strut and convert it to coilover using a GOOD shock absorber (bilstein, koni,AVo, race orientated shocks) that would get rid of relying on 'cheap s13 coilovers'. i would also go straight to the R31 LCAs (i kept the s13 ones). The other downside of the s13, is that the nuckles weigh an absolute ton, i suspect that the unsprung mass of the s13 gear was a good 40% heavier than the ae86 gear. which in all forms of motorsport is definately a downside. now all of this is based on my oppinion, so i hope it is of some use in making your decision. -

the s13 vs 86 discussion comes up fairly often, http://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/49714-ae86-or-s13/ That is an old topic where i give my experiences and oppinions. -

S13 Front end in a ke70 is rubbish though. -
From comparing price and features, I would be inclined to go for one of those new haltech sprint 500's. They look like a nice bit of kit. for a simple engine such as the 4age bigport. I would defiantely go completely aftermarket, no piggy back thing.

ah yes, you gotta hate it when tyres need replacing at a tyre shop! haha Soooooooo, rollaclub discounts?

Really great to see some DIY home spray painting with a spray gun! Its come up well by the looks of it. Just the weekend gone i dug out the spray gear to spray some acrylic paint on some MDF speaker boxes. Primer was easy at 1:1 ratio paint:thinners. Went on well as primer does. but the colour really needed closer to 1/3 paint 2/3 trinners to get it coming out the gun nicely. Simliar to the clear coat. Trick is to have lots of old cardboard to spray onto, to see the paint coming out of the gun. took us nearly half a "gun worth" of paint to adjust the gun so that it comes out nice. The other trick is just to have a go! paint can always be sanded back if you really screw it up. My first paint job was my old corolla in metalic blue (simliar to yours actually). I didnt find metalic particularly more difficult to paint than the standard paint, but yeah its good to get a lots of coats down. Also not sure what stage you are up to, but put on ALOT of clear coats, gives you more to cut/buff back without accidently cutting through to the primer on corners!!!! (we did 10 coats of clear on my speakers, helloooo piano black finish!) -
Do you work at a tyre shop?

Sounds to me like the engine isnt hooked up like it is meant to be (elecltrically), therefore it will never run how it is meant to. I dunno how electrically minded you are, but if you study the 4age loom there is not alot too it. TVIS for instance is only 1 wire to the tvis actuator, the other wire goes to ground. Alot of the wires in an loom that you buy isnt actually needed to run the engine in a converted car, as generally they incorporate alot of other stuff to make it neater (lights, aircon etc). Even the proper RWD looms from ae86s still contain stuff you don't need to run the engine in a conversion situation. This should be your engine/ecu. http://club4ag.com/t...a-gts-ecu-pins/ if you are in doubt that your loom is stuffed (which i think i think you are), i suggest you remove the loom completely from the car, pull appart all the tape/insulation from the loom, and follow every single wire from the ecu, and make sure it goes where it is meant to go. Then you can remove anything that isnt needed, and end up with a loom that you know is correct, and that is as minimal as it needs to be. Also remember these looms/wires are going on 30yrs old, and unless you physically pull it from the original car, its probably been installed and removed from many cars through many conversions.....wires and plugs don't like being removed too many times, so its not unheard of to find broken wires in the middle of a loom! oh yeah, if your TVIS is not working, then don't expect any go below 3800? rpm (which i think is where it turns off). if i remember correctly, TVIS is actuated by vacuum, and the solenoid blocks the vacuum source at the specificed rpm. thus the tvis plates are always open, thus it runs like its meant too above ~3800, but you don't get the benifits at the lower rpm.

yep id guess your either out on your ignition timing as gjm85, or your camshaft timing. The bigport especailly is quite punchy at low revs thanks to TVIS.

This link here gives "alloy race components" as a supplier for a bellhousing....from 2005. www.toymods.org.au/forums/tech-conversions/1694-2zz-ge-into-rwd.html http://www.alloyrace.com/ If you are serious about the conversion id be giving someone like this a call. there seems to be a few clubmans with this engine, upside of a clubman is that you generally don't have a firewall to contend with, you can mount the engine a fair way from the firewall (my mates clubman has a huge airbxo between the 4age engine and the windscreen!). edit: sounds like the electronics (specifically the varibale valve timing) is much more complicated than the bellhousing problem.
-
Find a decent sized hill, and drive up it in a higher gear than you normally would and keep advancing the timing untill it pings, then back it off a bit. Don't expect a monumental difference, but every bit counts!

I'm always keen for a drive, ill see whats on closer to the date.

Whats wrong with your current carb? Rebuild kits are cheap.
-
Gasket material is cheap! Pair of scissors makes gaskets! I just made a carby gasket for the Drover using this method (too stingy to buy the real one....)

i did that, pretty much nothing happends on my facespace.
