Well, I wouldn't have expected that.
-
Yeah, big differences in roll centre height may not help. Back springs are so easy to change, might as well give it a crack.
-
Nice :) Well that only really leaves softer springs and better tyres. Well, or rose jointing, but that's a whole other story :)

Another Ke70 Engine Conversion (Ls1 Turbo) (Pics Inside)
snot35 replied to vltrb-0's topic in Engine Conversions
This is stupid. Carry on :) -
Thorn proof won't necessarily fix it, it depends why you're getting punctures. What pressure are you running and how rough is the stuff that you're riding?

I reckon you want to think about the back more. If you've still got the TRD lower springs in it give them the flick. If they're designed for road they're probably too hard and with lowering you may have stuffed the geometry of the trailing arms. If you've got some stock AE86 around give them a shot. When I swapped from choppies to AE86 in mine the difference was night and day. It gave me a heap more traction and made the car more predictable and drive able. Previously, even with the 4K, I spent most of my time looking out the side window and not going anywhere. Rally guys will tell you to soften the back so it will squat under power, they usually run stock or slightly harder springs on the back with standard-ish heights. I've also been told to get rid of the rear bar and wind more castor into the front. Haven't got to that yet, but hope to before my next outing. Also, if you can get your hands on some second hand rally tyres you're going to go a heap faster too. P.S. I have AGE envy, that thing sounds awesome. Just what I want and was going to get until my recent speeding fine :abuse:

Yeah I've emailed them spring rate queries before and they're very responsive. Thumbs up for King springs on that one!
-
I reckon I've seen the superpro ones on ebay for about $30 posted, it's almost worth saving the hassle!
-
Yeah alright, if it's no trouble I'll grab the part number for some investigation. I'm actually not aiming to stiffen the rear at all as for off road it takes away traction. I started with choppies in the back and they were way too stiff. Changed to AE86 and it improved things immensely. I'm now going to try KE70 springs which are softer again and should give a bit more traction. The only thing is the ride height. I love the ride height on yours, I'd probably want a tad more though.

So, I've been thinking ride height a lot lately, basically it's giving me the sh!ts. I reckon I'm about 30mm above where I should be on the back and around 50mm on the front. I ripped out the front springs to try and work out options for lowering. I was thinking about a chop, but I'm not sure that's going to be the best way. To get the rate that I want with choppies I'm still going to have only lowered it about 15mm tops. On the back the rate is going to get too high as well and still not give me enough drop. I might have to head to upullit some time with the tape measure and verniers. There has to be some vehicle that I can pilfer springs from. For future reference, here are the front spring details: Late TE72 (Series III, 81-83) 4.5 free coils, 12mm wire, 145mm OD 387mm free height and 260mm compressed. So I'm getting around 25% sag on the front and around 30% on the back. I need closer to 40-45%. Based on spring compression I get around 492kg on the front axle and 392kg on the rear axle for a total of 884kg on a '70 with no interior or seats and stripped sound deadening. I expect that's a very rough weight. I'm not sure how accurate my measurements are, plus the car is on a bit of a slope!

I reckon it's the 72 springs that have been designed to hold up 20 billion kilo's (dry) of 3TC. Mine are exactly the same
-
Wow, they're huge! I'm running std sway with the superpro bushes, 55 arms on a '70 and they were fine to get on. How much are you short by? To actually do them up they will be compressed a hell of a lot anyway, mine were. Could give their height a trim with a sharp knife?
-
Some new bits finally. I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do with them yet, I believe they're not going to work so well with the rear end for off road purposes. I'll come up with something. :) I'm thinking of having a shot at fabbing a panhard road fully rose jointed first as I'll need it to take advantage of these. That's probably a month or two off though.

Ooops, just read that might be a problem, sorry! :)

I'm pretty sure the AE92 models weren't homologated with a supercharger. I remember there being an import Levin in Adelaide that had a supercharger and it had to be taken off to run in proper rallies. If you can jag it get proper rally tyres. They make all the difference. Even though the snow tyres would be a bit better, a tyre with decently edged blocks and the stiffer side walls that rally tyres have, make all the difference. When I got my first rally car I had proper tyres on the front and snow/mud on the back. Even on a FWD car, upgrading the backs to proper rally tyres made boat loads of difference. You'll go faster and they'll take ages to wear out. Plus you can play around with pressures more with them having the stronger carcass. If you get the hang of left foot braking then you'll have grip when you want it, and slides when you want it too! :)

It sucks they don't have the price list on the internet anymore. I nearly took a photo of it with my phone last time I was there but didn't for some reason. Above price sounds about right though.

Using Fuel Return Pipe As Brake 'bundy' Tube
snot35 replied to dbr11k's topic in Automotive Discussion
Why risk it? The tube isn't that expensive. Also consider the pressure the fuel system is designed to cope with is way less than a braking system. If you're doing your fuel lines properly, why not do the same for the brakes? -
I reckon the '70 is a great choice of khana car. Fortunately I haven't had any incidents that prevented me from driving it home, I hope to keep that up! Yep, AE86 arms bolt on making PS arms a good option. I also believe you can put a quick rack in, or both depending on what you want to do :)
-
Not much has happened. Life and family is getting in the way! :) I do have some rose jointed trailing arms on the way, but they probably won't go in the car for quite some time. I'm going to have to work out all the travel arcs on the suspension, because there will be binding with a full rose jointed rear end as the arms are unequal length. I'm not sure how to get around that one yet, but it will probably involve fabrication. I'll probably do a heimed panhard rod first to see how easy it is.

What springs do you have on the front struts? My '72 struts seem waaaay higher (bad)!
-
Wow, that Celica has come a long way! It's looking the goods! How much on the dyno, or is that top secret? :)
-
Yeah, get stuck in! These things are supposed to do pretty well with rally, but you'd have to ditch the supercharger. And where's the fun in that? :)
-
Nice, another khana car! Like what you're doing, keep it up :)
-
I'm curious to know this part number. My TE72 struts aren't vented and I haven't found a vented option so far.

God this thing is feral.
