  1. Compression gone go shit again? Shame, but if its running then your bores and bearing surfaces should be in good shape, so minimal work required:) Great looking car, those over fenders are cool as.
  2. I guess the advantage is the 4age is pretty good right out thr box. An uber modified fast 4kc would sure be fun but not for everyone.
  3. Where abouts do you live? someone may be able to help you out.
  4. Why not? 4k carby should have as the 4k had vac advance.
  5. Pretty sure its the one in the engine bay, been a few years though. Hopefully someone else chimes in.
  6. alrighty, then no powers. Ignition fuse and ignition relay woudl be my first port of call. You should hear something click in the fuse box when you turn the key to ignition.
  7. How are you checking 12V at the coil? You should be putting one end of your multi meter on the + side of the coil, and the other end onto anything metal bolted to the body, preferably the negative side of battery. Do NOT put it on the negative side of the coil. You wont get anything if you do.
  8. How did you go painting 2pak at home? do you have to bake it in the sun? Ive only ever sprayed thinners based acrylic, always been a bit scared of 2 pak...
  9. You using the choke? Does it have a manual choke cable in the car? Little doovy on the dash that you pull out. If it does check its operation. My old 4kc liked a bit of choke for the first ~30secs.
  10. Pretty much every points distributor in the world looks like this: The flat head screw in the back ground behind that wire is how the adjustment is done. The little arm thing goes up and down on the 4 sided cam. An electronic distributor looks something like this which has no adjustable parts, this is a 5k dizzy i think which if you do have an electronic one it will be one of them. it uses a magnetic pickup, with no user adjustability.
  11. Don't get all Emo on us! It sounds like you dont entirely have a grasp on how exactly the ignition system works. I suggest doing some extended reading on how it works. This is a pretty good start: http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/how-to/a6382/4338376/ and here is some info that includes the ballast resistor that we are talking about http://www.randakksblog.com/ballast-resistors-explained-ballast-testing-procedure/ Remember that points ignition systems have been used on engines from the dawn of time until the late 80s, the k motor system is not unique in any way, same old shit different badge on the back of the car:) Once you have an understanding on how its supposed to work you can start proper diagnostics. easy to check things include: - Is the coil bolted down properly - it might need to be bolted down in order to ground itself (my 4age one did, cant recall the k motor one) -Do you get a positive between the + side of the coil and ground with the ignition switch on -is the points gap set properly as per altezzas post - this is critical
  12. On the contrary my wifes subi forestor takes 0-20w. Its like bloody water. We were on a holiday amd i noticed it was a bit low, all the servo had was 15-40w so i put about 1L in to top it up. It did not like it at all. Idle was a bit funny and generally not running quite right. Spoke to a mechanic friend amd he reckons the vvti oil operated things cannot deal with yhe thicker oil and that was probably what i was experiencing. Dumped the oil when i got home and filled it with 0-20w again and it ran perfectly. The subi actually burns oil like crazy to. Burns whatever full to empty is on dip stick in about 5000kms. Mechanic friend reckons all modern cars burn the super thin oil, but they use the super thin oil to get the fuel economy. So we are burning oil to save petrol.....hmmmm. So if thick oils makes modern engines play up, i guess you can assume too thin oik on old engines isnt advised? 15_40w is a pretty safe bet on old engines. My beema specifies 20-50w and it seems to be quieter with it compared to 15-40.
  13. Geez Louise! Things just got real hey in medicineman world. Congrats!
  14. wowzer, never knew something like that existed. I assume it only uses the o2 sensor on cruise though and adjusts the carby under steady state cruise conditions.
  15. How does it have a carby and an 02 sensor?
  16. Looks like you have had a win! As suggested by Altezza, replacing the condenser is recommended. I spent ages trying to fix my k motor when i first got it. I'm unsure exactly what the condensor does, but the car would idle perfectly but as soon gas you applied any load (ie moving the car at all) the ignition would break down, to the point i had to push the car off the road with it idling smoothly as it woudlnt move itself at all. I replaced everything and then finally I bought a $4 Condenser and it was fixed....I don't think condensers break very often, but when they do the engine hardly works at all.
  17. Presumably its got enough oil in it?
  18. Love it:) is it manual?
  19. Years ago my mate got 2 used rotary housings through carry on luggage from NZ.......so maybe you'll be fine! Surely postage costs from AUS to usa woudlnt be too bad? for small stuff like camshafts etc. I threw my k motor in the tip yrs ago, but someone will have an army of them in their garage they can send you stuff?
  20. I get the impression K motors are very rare in the USA? Forgive my ignorance but what did all your old corollas come with 2t and 3t engines? K motors are basically given away for free here, you'll trip over one if you aren't careful. I see you reference finnegans garage. I must admit watching roadkill/roadkill garage/finnegans garage i am quite jelous of the parts availability for the v8 muscle cars from the 60s and 70s. bloody v8s everwhere, and they all seem to bolt in to every other car, 2 wires to connect and you have 300hp. Is this how it is in real life? are v8s everywhere for these things?
  21. 2007 was my peak ke70 building days. Dropping into your house Matt with the steep driveway, buying all your old parts every few weeks when i got paid. That is 10yrs ago now. Sold ke70 early in 2011, over 6yrs ago.....
  22. Ohh very exciting:)
  23. So just before we get too excited, the oil would have bumped up the compression as it made a better seal. I'd say run it for 10mins and test again. If the oil goes away and compression drops back to where it was......well you are still up for rings! Actually i remember my 4age now. I tested the compression straight after picking it up from littleredspirits garage, terrible results, worse than yours I reckon. I then put it on an old tyre, used some PVC piping as an exhaust, connected up an ECU and a fuel pump and started it, thats when the compression came good. Put the engine in the car, stated it again and blew the headgasket, and it was the worst condition headgasket i have ever seen, changed the gasket and happy days for 4yrs.
  24. You wanna set the ignition timing to ~10degrees BTDC with the vac line off at idle speed, then set the idle screw on the carby to make it idle good with the timing set already. if you are having idle troubles but it goes alright then you prolly have a vac leak i reckon. Where abouts are you located? maybe one of the rollaclub brains can drop in.
