I'd go up to KE70s for the suspension. Anything to get away from those rear leaf springs but not go front-wheel-drive... Its all up to you. $3000 is quite a high budget, and whatever you decide just make sure you take your time and buy a car as original as possible and off someone who has owned it for a long time. DON'T buy some sacked out piece of crap off a young guy with black underbonnet and a skull for a choke knob, it will be endless trouble. My neighbour bought home two Holden (Daewoo!) Captiva's to show me as his wife is having a baby and he wants a bigger car. I said "not a fking chance in hell, these are rubbish! For an extra couple of grand buy a brand-new Skoda Yeti (VW) with a 5year warranty..." Nope, today I see he's signed up to borrow over $20K and get one of these boats, something his wife can't even see over the dashboard of!! He just couldn't resist it once he'd got all enthusiastic. I just want to go and shoot myself for even knowing him! So start looking now and give it 4 or 5months. ..and don't buy the first one you see!

Why Do You Think We Need A Govt??
altezzaclub replied to altezzaclub's topic in Rollaclub Social (Off-Topic)
Can't argue with that! I mean, I moan about how backward Aussie is with quaint ideas like supermarkets can't sell alcohol, but I'm not going to behead anyone over it. At least I'll wear a T-shirt and cook on a barbie! But blowing up members of some barbaric religion on the other side of the world is not going to do anything for us at all, except have our freedoms taken away in the name of 'security'. That means the terrorists have already won, we have lost our Aussie way of life, and no longer are presumed innocent until shown to be guilty, are spied upon by the Govt every day, have no freedom of speech, have our internet censored, can be jailed for our political or religeous views, can be jailed without charge and unable to access a lawyer, can be tortured, and our tormentors have total immunity from the law... That's just plain tyranny! ..and of course it always starts "only in special circumstances.." then in a decade it is used everywhere. Its become obvious the USA will bomb Syria's military as well as ISIS, anything to get rid of Bashar Assad. That will leave the way for a new president who will let the gas pipeline through from UAE/Qatar/Kuwait/Saudi right through Turkey to Europe, and end Europe's dependency for energy on Russia. Getting rid of Assad also cuts another Russian ally out, so the USA can finally tackle Iran, the one they've been trying to subdue for years! NO-ONE will sell oil in anything except USA dollars! Anyway, the Rockefellers are selling their oil companies and that is the greatest pointer to us all running out of oil soon, so the world will be a very different place in the future! Electric KE70 anyone.... ----------------------------- and when people tell you democracy is the answer... ...democracy is not liberty. The meaning of liberty was explained by the French classical liberal Benjamin Constant in a famous lecture he delivered in 1819, The Liberty of the Ancients Compared with that of the Moderns. Said Constant: "First ask yourselves, Gentlemen, what an Englishman, a Frenchman, or a citizen of the United States of America understand today by the word 'liberty.' For each of them it is the right to be subject only to the laws, and to be neither arrested, detained, put to death or maltreated in any way by the arbitrary will of one or more individuals. (Not if someone in ASIO points you out and picks you up..) "It is the right of everyone to express their opinion, (nope, can't express an opinon on many things, especially racism and terrorism) to choose a profession and practice it, (nope, only if you get Govt permission and licences first, so THEY choose, not you) to dispose of property, (nope, only if you get Govt permission again!) and even to abuse it; (nope, Govt will stop you doing what you wish to your property- try cutting down a tree or building a garage.. they decide, not you) to come and to go without permission, (nope, ID to drive or travel overseas, and if you're on a Govt list you're not allowed to) and without having to account for their motives or undertakings. (Nope, you have to explain why you are travelling and where you are going. Some places are not allowed.) It is everyone's right to associate with other individuals, (nope, not if they are a member of a gang or terrorist organisation, or even just support those groups) either to discuss their interests, (nope, no freedom of speech now) or to profess the religion which they and their associates prefer, (plenty of religions are banned, just not in Aussie atm) or even simply to occupy their days and hours in a way which is more compatible with their inclinations or whims. (HELL NO, the Govt will spy on you every moment of your life and make sure you are living it according to they wishes at the time.. its not called Nanny State for nothing! Don't smoke dope, don't eat too much fat, don't drink sugary drinks, don't smoke tobacco, don't..) "Finally it is everyone's right to exercise some influence on the administration of the government, either by electing all or particular officials, or through representations, petitions, demands to which the authorities are more or less compelled to pay heed." (and this is the right to be completely ignored by them.) In fact protesting against the Govt's new teror laws will instantly get you investigated and put on a watch list for life.. Anyone up for a demonstration in Canberra against the new laws? Oh, no-one wants to ruin their future, what a surprise, everyone is terrorised into submission already. So any "liberty" you think we have now is just an illusion left over from what our ancestor REALLY had! -
I'll put my hand up! We took the spring pack apart and cut one leaf shorter, then fitted it upside down. I can't remember which leaf it was, I think we had a spare set of leafs from another car to play with. You can see we fitted it to the top, and upside down so it pre-loaded the other leafs and flattened the set. It also softened the spring overall as the pack lacked that leaf doing its normal holding-up work. It also acted as an anti-tramp bar by stopping the spring from winding up under acceleration, which is why we did it in the first place! Sadly, soonish afterwrds Rob decided that khanacross shell was too rusty, bought another KE55 and hasn't got it finished yet for us to do more experiments.

Pick ONE.... trouble-free & reliable is the opposite of MOAR POWERR! -
No, it is a very simple system. The plate is 14mm thick, so you take the J160 bellhousing off and machine 14mm off the g'box side, then put it back on and bolt it up to the plate on the motor. That preserves the distances and you use the Altezza clutch plate spline system. You also have to grind out the bell housing where the starter goes in, taking a curve of 10mm to zero out of the housing over about 30mm long by 15mm wide. We were looking seriously at the Leen when Steve contcted Niteparts and they said they had one. I don't know why they haven't got it up on their site, this is the best possible solution to bringing a modern geabox with decent ratios to the 4AGE.
-
Leaf springs or not, can you keep the bottom arms on the R31 and weld mounts on the chassis?? At least that helps to stop it walking around under the car. The panhard would be real nice to keep too....
-
You can run the J160 box with a Niteparts adapter plate, its only $700 odd... The Leen is nice but it costs thousands. The T-series box will do, but if I were you I would price the gearbox rebuild and see how it compares to an imported Altezza box for about $700 & a Niteparts plate for the same. The Altezza ratios are far far better than the T-series, especially in the 3rd to 6th area. Here's a chart of the revs drop between gears for the K50, T50 & J160. I left 6th gear off, but you can see how much smaller the revs drop is when you change gear in the J160.

That's dead right, its hard to sell outside the big metropolitans or at least get many potential customers, so you end up with very few offers. The black engine bay is a minus I reckon, suddenly its no longer an "original little ol' lady's car", but the body looks good. People who just want to drive it as is will pay a couple of grand, people who want to restore it and take out the rust will discount the nice paint as they will be stripping it back. They'll pay more for all that chrome trim if its straight, that's the sort of thing that is getting harder to find.

That's what its all about! If you crash it its about the cheapest car to rebuild/replace, so its ideal for learning. Love the bits in the wet! Put the camera on the dash or even better, outside on a B pillar, and it gives a much better view of what is happening. Post up when its on SBS if you can find out ahead. -
Do it! The difference is amazing! I have one of each in the garage and the manual was an auto when we bought it. The 3-speed auto is a dog of a box, robs all the power from the motor and revs its stupid little head off with a 4.3 diff and a 1:1 top gear. The manual pulls a 4.1 diff and a 5th gear easily, so you drop over 500rpm at 100kph. The auto uses a litre/100km more on the open road and at least 2L/100km more around town. The moment we drove it with a manual we were stunned at how much more responsive it was, and how much quicker around town. Its in here- http://www.rollaclub...the-girls-ke70/

I reckon it depends on how well the first pipes blend into the second. The OD looks larger on the casting, so what are the IDs like? The casting walls will be thicker than the pipes. Does it give good smooth flow right down to the collector? I didn't know they were prone to cracking, but having cracked a set of extractors and seen Pintara R31 castings crack, some do and some don't. I will admit I tossed my stock manifold in the corner without ever considering using it with the other mods.
-
Well, you could upgrade them but you'd never feel the difference as the rear bias limiter would cut the pressure off at the same level it does now. The rears do about 20% of the braking, its the fronts that do all the work. We use bigger rears on the rally car and take the limiter out, and you can feel the tail squat down when you bias it to the back. That still doesn't give much braking compared to the front, but on gravel the fronts just lock so you need the balance. You shouldn't need to touch the brakes. The national speed limit is 100kph, which you do with a 4K and the car doesn't weigh any more with a 4AGE compared to 5 passengers and luggage. So stock brakes are fine. You can do over 100kph if you like, but stock brakes are good up to a 4K max speed, which I assume is about 160kph. So really you'll have to do more than 160kph before you move out of the stock setup's limits. I don't think any engineer should be arguing for you to modify brakes so can drive at over 160kph... So long as the brakes lock up at the front you have all the braking you can ever use. Bigger brakes will just lock the tyres up faster. However if you ever put it on the track I'm sure you'll find they fade far too fast, 4K or 4AGE!

That's the correct way to look at it! Yes, its hellish expensive, but I don't know the answer. The Altezza is about $600 at Shannons and the two KE70s aren't insured, only 3rd Party property.
-
KE70 is the same, as I found out when fitting seat rails to the new rally car. Quite a few asymmetrical bits in the floor pan, especially where the resonator sits under the passenger's floor.
-
Just launch it like a white man and it will be fine. The maximum power going through it when driving isn't the problem, its getting the mass of the car moving at the start that really hammers transmissions. Close to that would be violent gear changes from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th, I've seen people bang the clutch back out at peak revs and the shock loading would be horrific. Just get the clutch right out each time before you really nail it. The BorgWarner is a pretty terrible diff, so you can expect the bearings to whine if they don't already.

Why Do You Think We Need A Govt??
altezzaclub replied to altezzaclub's topic in Rollaclub Social (Off-Topic)
LoL! How about Altezzaclub's-rant-to-wake-up-the-zombies-inhabiting-the-world.. or are you happy with a "high" terror alert for 'a long time'.... "Extra Police presence"? What does that mean? All they can do is stop and interrogate more members of the public going about their lawful business... oh, and intimidate them to make sure they all realise The Govt Is In Control.. You've already giving up your freedom for security. Ah, almost as funny as the Dutch politician who was in TV's MH17 program tonight, complaining about Holland buying all its oil/gas from Russia, people who "were not sharing the same values as Holland.." He obviously didnt realise Europe's option was to buy it from the Muslims in the Middle-East, or maybe the Dutch are going back to public beheadings these days... -
Why Do You Think We Need A Govt??
altezzaclub replied to altezzaclub's topic in Rollaclub Social (Off-Topic)
...aaand.. this one was interesting because I'd just read that since the time that I was born (1950 or so) the number of laws in the USA has increased by 18times! So for every law then we now have 18, assuming Aussie is the same as America and I can't see it being any different. NZ realised a decade or two back that no one person knew all the tax laws and the demands of the tax parasites were purely random. That was when David Henderson had a massive stoush with IRD and Parliament got involved. Suddenly the MPs realised they knew nothing about how their tax was gathered, and more importantly, they didn't want to know, just so long as it kept rolling in! So, want to build a garage out the back... -

Why Do You Think We Need A Govt??
altezzaclub replied to altezzaclub's topic in Rollaclub Social (Off-Topic)
..and while Julie Bishop is wanking on about how ISIS can't be eliminated, AND carefully avoiding pointing out that they were formed, trained and armed by the USA to get rid of Assad's Govt in Syria... we have more clowns closer to home! Infinity pools are the ones where the water flows over one side to be collected and recycled, so you have a drop straight off one wall. ...and so it goes on! You are being lined up for another reaming by your masters over the 'recognition of aboriginal rights' referendum. Those above you have a picture of the future, one that they have probably been told to have by the UN, and careful advertising will make sure you all vote for it. .....or at least a close enough vote so they can bullshit the results to get the answer they want. Once it is recognised that Australia belonged to the abos and it was taken from them by the whites, you will have the happy situation of NZ currently, an endless gravy train of claims for billions of dollars for things your great-grandparents did! (or never did at all, but no-one can stand up and call the claiments liars as it is all done in a secret court!) Naturally the clowns in power don't care, its taxpayer's money and it makes them look good as they help the "poor and underpriviledged". You have until Oct 30th to make a submission and a 'suggestion' of the question that should be on the ballot paper. Watch this space... -
Feral4Ks Custom Backyard Paintwork Tutorial
altezzaclub replied to Feral4K's topic in Automotive Discussion
So are we talking Duco or Dulon here? I was spraying when Duco was the norm with enamel as the alternative, and then this new Dulon was introduced for metallic paints. Long before everyone went to 2-pack Urethanes, and I think there are newer systems since then. Duco was a nitrocellulose laquer, with Dulon being an acrylic- Great solvents! These kids sniffing petrol know nothing! Ah- more Wiki- We would progressively thin the top coat over successive coats to get a better shine, and mix clear laquer in with the colour on the last couple of coats to give it some depth. Probably the reality is summed up here- Using urethane is difficult but the results are better and last much longer. Nice idea, but the rally car gets sprayed in brushing enamel with turps thinner! -
Needs some white! Sigh.... Steve is flat-out this year so we haven't touched ours for months. We'll start again after Xmas.

Ke70 Demister Not Working..... Please Help
altezzaclub replied to liamke70's topic in KExx Corolla Discussion
Get out your trusty $10 multimeter and turn it onto 12V DC. Put the black lead on a metal fitting for earth, unplug the wires on the fan and stick a probe into each wire with it all turned on. If you can find a 12V feed there then you know power is getting to the fan, it should be the LG wire. You can see from the diagram the main feed is through the heater fuse and the relay is switched on via the wiper feed. So full power goes to the heater motor and the speed is controlled via its earth, like the headlights work. You should have power to the LG (blue/green) and the LR(blue/red) with with ignition switched on. If there is no power to LG it is a fuse or wiring connection, but power to LG and not LR means the motor is burned out. If you have power to both those and the heater fan doesn't work on "high", then the switch or it's earth is borked. -
So that is 3-4mm down the dipstick? About half a litre? The Girl's KE70 would use that in 1000Km trip up to Qld, and my Gold car doesn't use oil. See what the compression test says, if the oil rings are not great the compression could also be poor. It would be nice to have 150-160psi on all cylinders. 130 would be very worn, and any one low cyl would suggst a broken ring or burnt valve.
