Hey guys I'm sure someone will chew me out for this but I can't find the info any where. Just wanting too know if a 4k head on a 5k will improve it or not?

I had 30 thou shaved off my 4k head to raise compression. So i put it all back together today but now there is a really loud tapping that sounds like its coming from the top end its, not valve clearance or the rocker gear because i adjusted the clearances until they almost had no gap at all but it wouldn't go away so i put another rocker gear in and still the same I'm thinking maybe because of the head sitting lower the push rods are on a different angle that makes them noisy but I'm not sure what do you think?

Thermostat jammed closed (Oh I hate those troublesome things) and she didn't notice the temperature guage climb into red area. (have you ever met a girl that drives & looks at the guages at the same time ) Picked me up from doctors & said the brake are making a funny smell. Lift bonnet. Smoke coming out between head & block. Hey Guys, Well my project has been going super slow (4KTE), got all the parts, just need to put it together. Ive got a 4K-U engine with dished pistons (can tell by the two lumps on the head under plugs 1 & 4). soon ill be getting a head off a regular flat-top 4k (in order to drop CR) my question is is it a straight swap? pull off my head and put the "new" one on? or do i have to swap over the push rods or anything like that? second Q is.. Where can i find ARP Head Studs and Bolt? since i will be boosting, and quite a bit i recon, i want the head to sit nice and tight.. Thanks, David

Hi, i'm just after some general advice on a 4k engine and where to go for some mechanical work to be done on the motor - the reason i'm asking is; The engine blows quite abit of blue smoke which indicates to my novice mind that the rings are possibly gone/going/cracked, also there is quite a substantial amount of blowby in the carby. The motor has done 300000 odd k's and I am quite suprised it's still running. So what I am after is the best place to either get these checked, and depending on the outcome, fixed. At the same time Id like to obtain a weber3236, a 25/65 cam, heavy duty springs and to also run 0.400" valve lift. I would like this to be all in the brisbane …

Hello Guys, Firstly Ive had my trusty 4k-e EFI starlet for a while now and it has had an intermitent tap in the top end for a while. I pulled the hydraulic tappets to bits this week and discovered that the diaphram's inside and rooted. So they are back in the car. Now I love my baby soo much that I need to keep her in a1 condition. What parts will I need to convert a hydraulic tappet 4k, to cam followers and pushrods. Will a 3k Solid lifter and cam follower work in a 4k hydraulic motor? Or do I need the 4k solid as a donor? Are the rod lengths different in 2/3/4k's?

i just need a little info, i have a ke20 that had a 3k and i wanna put a 4k. do i need 3k mounts because the 4k sits high and what about the carby and the gas peddle cored . any help would be great thanks

Gaday, i'm wanting to know what injection manifolds are availiable to fit a 4K. Me and my mate are planning on trying to make a gas injection setup for our rally car, and since his dad is a gas fitter he can do this quite easily but we don't want to make our own manifold, and i'm wondering if maybe a 7k one would bolt onto a 4k head and if it does what cars did they come on. cheers

Hi all,was hoping to get some advice on a problem with what appears to be a gasket that goes between the inlet and exhaust manifolds which is partly missing (see photo). I have heard that you can get some exhaust repair paste that could potentially be a quick fix, but thought i would see if anyone else has had issues with this before (i haven't been able to find much info on this gasket, even the workshop manual i have doesn't seem to mention it in the inlet/exhaust manifold section). Hi guys, Searched everywhere couldnt find any decent info so if anyone can link me something i suck. :( My 1K is kind of on the way out and I'm looking at my options. Is it possible to rebuild the 1k with out spending an arm and a leg? Also is the 4k and option? i would like to bolt on the 2speed toyo glide gearbox. swapped heads over on the auto 4k kesev i have and the only thing i didnt label was the bloody leads, just wondering easiest way to get it running as it wont start and i don't wanna crank it over with em firing at wrong times etc the leads were taken off the head but not the dizzy any ideas

hey guys, long time reader first time poster. straight to the problem. my car started off with a miss early last week which has now gotten much worse to the point of it being undriveable. the problem is if i give it any less than 3/4 throttle the engine cuts off every second or so (it sounds similar to a bridgeported rotary engine). if i however give it more that 3/4 throttle then it revs as it should at 3/4 throttle. the 3/4 point to me felt like the opening of the secondarys in the carby so i replaced it- the problem still remains. The engine is stock but has no air filter and a very bad exhaust leak. Please let me know what you think some potenti…

Hey, names alex I got my first ke55 corolla sedan for $100 and it was love at first sight. Now i have managed to pick up a 2 door with a 4k engine. now i don't wanna sound like everyone else but I'm trying to find cheap( read reliable) little mods that will make it a run properly, and maybe a little better. *somebody dropped a 5 speed gearbox in it ( i'll write up the specs when i get them) but hasn't connected the speedo, and it looks like someone snipped the cable with bolt cutters. I'm not even sure if the speedo cable will fix/work what the hell can i do? why couldn't k series motors be crossflow eh?

I just pulled down a 4K and it has the combustion chamber is in the piston. What modle Corolla had this type of 4K? This is the first time my father and I have found a motor like this. Any help would be great. Aaron

Hello fellow corolla fans, I own a 1974 KE25 Coupe, Which had a Low k Japanese motor put in it a few years before i bought it, i know that it is a 4K but don't know how to tell if it is a 4KC or not? Would any one b able to tell me how 2 tell which is which and if there are any differences! Thanks for the help as i'm fairly new to toyotas, As I was a Die hard Holden fan until I finished fixing up my KE25 Coupe! and now i love corollas!!

Ok so I'm rebuilding my 4k and have 5k pistons (8cc volume) pistons. Just wondering if any one can point me in the right direction to what my compression will be. Head is a ke70 4k head. Hope this is enough info. Thanks in advance

Hello does any one know the weight for 4 k pistions?? and i was wondering how much skirt you could take off it before the become unrelable (standed pistions only) and all so has any one tryed grinding there own cam ? i have a spare and the way i figer why pay some one else to do it when i can learn by stuffing it up and trying a difent appproch and learn a bit more plus if i stuff it up it will only reck my valve train i got spares but no money (2 kids and wife) and all most got a launch control hooked up i just need to find some thing that turns 12v 32a pulse (form points) in to a growing frequent voltage the put a varable ristor to a relay to cut the point going to the…

how many types of 4k pistons have you guys come across? iv seen flat top and dished. now iv got a JDM 4k-e in bits in my shed at the moment... and it looks to me that while they are dished, they are not as dished as others... anyone cc'd some dished pistons before?

I was putting a new carby on my 4k and i dropped a nut down the inlet manifold without realising so i started it and it seams to run fine so i don't think its done any damage i will pull off the manifold tomorrow and get it out luckily its too big to get past the valve it was running for about 10 minutes before i realsied i could hear it rattling in the inlet so i turned it off does any one think it would have caused any damage i don't really care its only a 4k but anyway?

I am just curious as to how big to jet a webber on a 4k and what would be a decent size cam re - grind to still be able to drive it on the street with out it being like it has a massive turbo on it :y:

Firstly can anyone comment from experience what a 4k with a 3k head should run like with a 3k carbie bolted on to it. do they over fuel? fart miss etc? reason for question is after an enigne swap we've found that the 4k is running rough as (think it's mainly thanks to faulty points) but yet overfuels and blows smoke as a result in the higher end of the rev range. yet none at idle or during startup, which one would expect from worn valve seals or rings. What should the expected compression be cylinder to cylinder on the above setup be? roughly 120 psi on a used motor? any help would be…

Hey I'm new to these corollas, and I have a 4kc in my ke70 and it's running like a dog the second last cyl is not firing, ive changed the plug and the lead and it's still not firing but it's sparking, I can pull the lead off and it will run the same at idle and revs! Is it a sticky valve or what's the problem

ok. So i drove my car for the first time today. and i gotta say, its super slow! Is this normal? 4K engine 3spd box ( i think its coz its a auto 3spd) I floored it and literally went no where! the speed didnt cross 50km/h Will a 5spd improve speed? Seriously thinking of a 4AGE conversion now :/

I just aquired a 4K engine which is currently running a bit rough so i thought i would pull out the spark plugs for a look see When i unscrewed the plug, the sleeve/surround came out with it Is this normal? If not does it need to be fixed? How? And also, i want to get a good set of plugs to suit the engine specs as far as i know it has standard internals except for the cam, twin dellortos & extractors Any reccomendations for plugs would be appretiated Cheers - Andrew

Okay so I've taken the head off the 4k to change a few things, taken extractors and carbie plus manifold off and all back on now, problem is now when I go to start it it turns over but pops really loud, from the carbie I think and extractors back firing kind of but won't start?! Now I did take the diZzy off so it's not in original spot so obviously timing would be a bit out but still thought it would at least start. Any ideas what would be causing it to pop loudly like this and not start? Started up fine last time I took the head off. Any help would b great, cheers!

hey guys, So I'm having trouble at the moment starting my 4k.After sitting overnight, it will turn over first click. after running the car, and then turning it off after say 10 minutes, the starter motor will tick, after two or three times of turning the ignition, then it wont even tick at all. first i thought it was the starter motor, so i replaced that, checked all the wires running to it, and they were fine. but it is still having these problems. any help would be appreciated. Just checked the free length of all my valve springs on my 4KC before I do a head recon this week. The good book says they should be 46.5mm free length. Mine are all over the place, between 44.8 & 45.9mm Me thinks I should fit a new set. Where's a good place in Brisbane to pick up a new set of std 4KC valve springs, without making my local Toyota guy richer. Maybe someones got a new standard set in a box lying around that they have never used, who would like to part with them for some green stuff. PM me & I will arrange the transaction. Does anyone have any information on converting a 4k dizzy to fit a 4age? A step by step write up would be excellent, but diagrams, pictures and measurements would be equally as helpful. Also, what are peoples succes rates with the 4k dizzy fittedto a carb'd 4age? Can they be made to run smoothly/well?

Hey I am looking at swapping out my 4K and and fitting a 5K in my rally car. Can I unbolt all mods like cam, carbies, exhaust, head etc from the 4K and bolt on to 5K? Will probable need bigger carbie. But for now should be ok. Thanks

No I'm not asking if turboing my 4k is a gd idea haha. I Have taz_rxs old setup just wondering if someone can help me with the ct12 turbo. Does anyone know where the pipe with the arrow is suppose to go to? and there also is two pipes under the turbo a thin one and a fat one what are they suppsoe to go to? or if anyone has like a paint drawing or just some pics if someone has same setup showing where the pipes go cheers. i have asked taz_rx but seeing if i get a quiker answer here cos can't drive car until i get it done and just double checking where to put pipes in case i put it in wrong place. thanks. :yes:

Gday guys, I'm a bit of a newbie to the rolla club website but is a very good site. i have a 4k which i have sone a blowthru turbo set-up on it everything runs sweet as but when i go to stop or pull up at the lights i get a bit of smoke come out the exhaust?? I'm using a brand new Garrett T25 so i don't think it has anything ro do with it, under boost or just cruising its fine only when the engine starts to slow down i get a bit?? any information would be good thanks chris :bash:

hey guys i just found a turbo setup for the k series engine and i was wondering if its worth the time to turbo the 4k or just do a complete engine swap. would like to know from some people who have turbo k's and would like to know output and work involved doing so. cheers guys

hey just been helpin a mate build up a 4k for his ke20 got it all running but its got factory twin carbs on it and wont idle. it runs sweet above idle but no matter what we do we can't get it to idle by itself. i checked fuel pressure it was at about 3 psi is this enough for the factory twin carbs or do they have more ? Any help would be greatly appreciated cheers Phil

Hey guys, Alec here, just started to strip my 4k due to it being rebuilt (expect a build thread!!!) now i just pulled the sump off, and i looked at the timing chain and it seems to have a twin row timing chain (i think). From what i've read on the FAQ and knowledge base (How To Build A Tough 4k) the 3ks had twin row but the 4ks have single and swapping to the twin is a good maintenance mod. Now, does this mean that this has twin row? or am i missing something here, sorry for the dumb question, was just unsure. heres a pic! cheers!
