Hey guys, About 2 months ago I was fixing a rather big exhaust leak where the 2 pipes go to one, So after looking at the exhaust flange (the nuts were so rusted on we couldn't get them off) we had to remove the entire carby manifold setup etc. After doing that and replacing all the parts (gaskets etc etc) it was running really well for about a week or two. Then it started to only run when the choke was half or fully open. So, first, we tweaked the idle screws abit with no luck. Then we started looking into the hoses, after replacing all the important hoses with new ones it was still happening. Finally we found the problem by running a carby rebuild kit in it and it fixed…

  3. Distributor Block Off Plate for 4KC? I'll be switching to mega squirt MSX3 soon and one of the reasons is to gain full control of the timing. In order to do this I have four 5v logic coil on plugs, a hall effect sensor, and 36-1 crank wheel. Obviously, the distributor is not needed with this setup. I know I need the bottom half because it is driven off the camshaft which turns the distributor that turns the oil pump. Is there a nice pre-fabricated cover to fit over the bare internals of the distributor while still allowing it to drive the oil pump? Regards, John

  5. Started by Trentshad,

I have just come into possession of a 78 Carolla. Body and everything is in great shape. The engine has a bad knock. It's undrivable because of the knock. I drove it on to and off of a car trailer to get it back to my house. The engine say ke55 but I was told it's been replaced with a Jem engine? In the past. I want to replace the engine. Is there a brand new engine that will go into this car or if not does anyone know where I could track down a reconditioned one and a someone who works on these to put it in. Or worst case scenario someone to fix the engine that's already in there.

  6. Hi, I need a bit of help with lowering my car. I have a ms85 crown, I ordered some lovells springs for front and rear, because they were the only company that I was aware of that made a lowered rear spring for my car (since I've found pedders makes one as well). So I installed the "sports low" springs which are the first level of low. The front is now scrubbing when I go over bumps in the road, and seems to have a soft spring rate, and the rear has barely even moved, but has a solid spring rate. It's really noticeable when corner that the rears are much stiffer. Has anyone come across variations between brands?, If I get pedders lowered springs for the rea…

  9. Hi all, Every car I have ever owned (except a commodore) has had a leaking rear main seal. Some of my cars worse than others. I have a rebuilt 5mge in one of my cars, and it started leaking straight away after the rebuild. From previous research I have herd that rear main seals can leak because of improper fitment, crap seals (crappy brands that come with clutch kits), and also due to crank balancing. Crank balancing is the one that interests me. I want to repair the leak on one of my 4x4's, because it's leaking oil really bad, but to go to the effort to remove the gearbox and replace it, and have it continue to leak after replacing it makes me wonder. If my c…

  10. Hi Guys, I am wondering what type of ignition systems have found to be good for k series engines. I gather many would have nippon denso electronic dizzys, converted from points. Has anyone tried the Pertronix Australia conversion kit? Or used an MSD system to increase spark and have a rev limiter option? I'm building a 4k with 11.5:1 compression and twin sideraughts for mostly track racing. Am curious of the electronic ignition options of what has proven to be reliable and perform well

It's the off season here in the wonderful state of Oklahoma, USA. That means bitter cold and prepping for spring. I'm considering boring my block and fitting over-sized forged pistons. The only place I have found that make pistons for the 4K is Kameari and those are 88,000 yen or about $770 US. They're also 79mm which seems like a stretch in the 4K block. Is there another company that makes over-sized forged pistons for a 4K? Thanks and happy holidays, JP

Hey Guys I'm back again at the request of the princess. She has been cruising around in her 55 hardtop for a short while now and all is well in her kingdom of cool. However upon my arrival from work last week i was greeted by her scary scowl. I was soon berated about how badly her car was running. A quick sprint up the street and I have to say it was as ragged as my bank balance. It was coughing and barking struggling to idle and was way down on power all my fault apparently. So with her arms crossed and her foot tapping at an angry pace I popped the bonnet and looked for anything obvious. Nothing. I checked the plugs, the points had a small blast on the contacts which i…

Hey guys Just a question of a cosmetic nature. I have finally finished getting my daughters KE55 hardtop complete and on the road for her. Just in the nick of time as she got her license last week. My question is do genuine passenger side mirrors exist, were they an optional extra, and is there securing nuts welded to the inside of the door skin the same as the drivers side. For safety I would like her to have a second mirror but she wants to keep it looking as original as possible. Any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

  17. My vintage x-code 5.6" TRD LSD is beginning to show signs of wear. I've located the correct TRD part number for a rebuild kit--40107-KP611. However, it's listed as discontinued. However again, just because a part isn't being made doesn't mean that part can't be found on a shelf somewhere. I know someone is going to suggest swapping in a AE86 rear and it might come to that...but buying a complete are axle assembly and adding or rebuilding a LSD for it, is going to be big bucks. The 40107-KP611 rebuild kit is listed as being about $150 US. Can anyone lend some advice on how to communicate withTRD Japan or point me to a third party that is good at hunting parts…

Hey guys, I need some advice on things that might cause the engine to stall when applying throttle or choke. Context: had year old fuel in the car from about a year of sitting around while body work and paint was being done. Car wouldn't run without stalling after about 12months, so we drained fuel tanks and refurbished carby. Now the thing starts and idles beautifully but any choke or throttle causes it to stall. The fuel pump seems to definitely be working because I disconnected inlet into the carburetor while the engine was running and it was flowing a tonne of fuel. The engine sounds like it might be misfiring a bit, but I don't know how to diagnose that. The vacuum …

Hey guys hopefully there is a simple fix to this dilemma that has just been noticed. I finally got my daughters KE55 coupe on the road but realised that the speedo is stuck at 35 km/h when driving it operates normally above point where it sticks. The accuracy is yet to be confirmed. I have pulled the cable out from the back of the speedo in the hope that it would fall back to zero but no luck. Any ideas on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, I need your expertise! The KE20 is at the mechanic's getting roadworthy (or trying too) and it's not passing because of a front brake issue. The previous owner did a KE30 brake upgrade to the front, to change the stud pattern I guess. Also had adjustable coils put into the front. Issue now is that the steering arm is pressing up against the back for the disc brakes, not allowing enough movement in the brakes to get them to compress firmly - I.E. BRAKES ARE SHIT, and always was a concern for me since buying and getting ready for roadworthy. Mechanics suggested solution is to replace the complete strut back to original KE20 OR find smaller brakes. I don't …

I would like to find some plug wires with a 90 degree plug to the distributor side. The engine is a blue top with factory cover, between cam covers. Would there be any compatible leads out there. The only ones i can find all have straight ends. The cheap ebay ones any good or rubbish? http://www.ebay.com....l8AAOSwvg9XYg-i The reason for this is with scorcher distributor the straight ends are streched to fit the distributor, the 90 degree ends would fix this problem and look better. rob

I am struggling with organising lowering springs for the front and was wondering has anyone used the Kings KFFL-15sl they are supposed to be a 50 mm drop which is what the boss wants the car to sit at. My dilemma is that the local auto shop guys say yep that is the part required but King Springs say that they don't make them any more. Looking on Ebay they are all over the place for sale however when you put the KE55 details into their fitment search the result is that they don't fit the car.The KFFL-15 are a match but the drop isn't enough only 30 mm and acco…

It's a 99 with the 1.8 1zz engine....It has a misfire that happens at all times,I've checked spark and all 4 wires are getting spark.checked the fuel injectors and number 4 injector does not have a signal so it's not injecting fuel.I checked voltage and I get 12volts to the b/w wire and I also have continuity in the black wire from the injector harness all the way back to the ecu.I went as far as to bypass the harness and run a separate wire from the ecu to the injector and still nothing.it seemed to me I had a bad ecu so I got ahold of another one same numbering and all but still nothing.I'm…

Hi! For 2 years ago I installed a ta62 brake booster and master cylinder into my ke35. Huge difference! Now I have also installed front calipers from the same ta62 into my ke35. Tried bleeding it about ten times but everytime I started the engine the pedal sank to the floor. I tried yesterday reinstall the old ke35 stock calipers and that made it a alot better! So what's wrong? Are the ta62's calipers harder to evacuate the air from or do they fail remaining pressure somehow?at least I can't see any leaks from them...

  34. Hi peoples, I found myself fitting a complete KE35 diff to my KE55 on Friday & of course the sway bar brackets were missing. Being in a hurry, I had no time to slice off & weld to the new housing, thinking "that can be done later". However, there seems to be some conjecture as to whether this car either benefits from or is otherwise hampered by a rear bar. If anyone has tried both with & without, I'd love to hear your opinions! :)
