I decided to replace my front shockies due to a major leak which caused a failed warrant of fitness. So i ripped into bnt and ordered a full set thinking all would be all cool.... Backs went in piece of piss... But to cut a long story short the front struts were completely different to the ones that i ordered. Apparently the ones i ordered were factory Carina inserts, but they have no seat for the spring?! Surely i shouldn't have to weld one on? so I'm guessing somebody along the line has converted the fronts to ke70 struts maybe?! I'll attach the struts in comparison and the list the part numbers. Because both struts have different part …

Gday guys! So I'm in a bit of a pickle at the mo. Took my car for a warrant(new zealand) to get it road worthy. Its failed on blown drivers side shock and cracks in the body/floor above the diff head. To cut a long story short the diff(from previous owners attempts to lower the car) had been slapping against the floor causing it to crack. Its been lowered(flattened leaves i think) and the bump stops above the ubolts have been cut in half! Lol but the stopper above the diff had been left normal height? If i ordered a generic set of lowering blocks would it stiffen up the rear and stop the so called diff slap? I'm guessing its getting the extra travel from the b…

Hey guys just recently brought my 1987 Ka67 AUTOMATIC Toyota Carina for a steal. Its running a 5k 3 speed automatic box and was curious to see if a k50 manual would bolt up to it? If so, what pedal box can i use to operate the clutch which was never there? I know its not a corolla, but i thought I'd give it a shot, sick of the crummy auto box already! Cheers!

Hello, I'm new to the site, just came across it while searching for how to fix my recently aquired 1983 starlet. I've used the search function and haven't been able to fix it yet. The previous owner hooked the battery up backwards, when purchased the car wouldn't do anything. I replaced a wire coming off the battery and it has power now and will turn over. I don't think the injectors are pulsing. The ecu is sending the pulse signal, I've replaced the solenoid resistor with one from a junkyard(don't know if it's good or not). Both wires going to the injectors are hot. I can pour gas in the intake and it will run. When I turn the engine over the injectors aren't pul…

I listened to a podcast today, whilst driving my Rolla, to drop off my daughter for uni, that had me asking the question of myself, “why am I so attracted to olde Rollas ?”. This question rolled around in my head for an hour or so, & I eventually, came up with the simple & most singular answer . . . . they are so reliable. The podcast also had me thinking about the philosophy of the people at Toyota, in the early days, when they started their design of a small car for the masses. It is not a co-incidence, that the name of their early models was the, “Publica”. Like many of us, here in Australia, if you are over 50 years old, your first int…

So I'm back in oz, and ive discovered tgat all this talk about a special filter with a special valve is all horseahit. All filters have anti drainback valve, some rubber, some silicone (better). But none of rycos filters on the shelf at supershit had an anti syphon valve as illustrated in their technical bulletin here: (page 2) https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.rycofilters.com.au/library/news/oil_filter_valves_technical_tips.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwiwwefq37nZAhUGpJQKHXdJC8wQFjACegQIBBAB&usg=AOvVaw1jIg5nE8qrCLEBwnZnVYLe Not a single filter had the anti syphon valve, and not a single filter doesnt have the anti d…

Giday all. On my way out of cebu, back to perth, I went to the middle of hell, the streets of old cebu city, stopped in at all the stores that sell surplus engine parts and found the worlds holy grail of toyota k engine parts. ANGELS SING!! So, when i head back, i will have myself a correct 4K-U cylinder head, with the lugs under 1 and for indicating its for dished 4K-U pistons. FYI, this head was stamped number "1" so our wiki page is incorect. The combustion chamber section of the head is notably smaller in volume than my non twin squish head, designed for flat tops. In photos you cannot really tell, but when its in your hand, u can visually see with depth per…

I recently began rebuilding the T50 transmission (AE86 Corolla) in my 1981 Starlet. It has a left hand starter motor and a right hand throw out arm. Normal. My donor transmission is also a T50 and is identical except that it has a bellhousing also with the starter on the left.....But with the throw out ALSO on the left. Just below the starter. My engine is a 4AGE. Was the donor car a 3A or 4A. (I never saw the car that this tranny came from) Is this "left handed" bellhousing unusual or sought after?

I am in need of a bit of advice from anyone with experience in the area of engine rebuilding. I've done lots of rebuilds in my time, about 20, of which only 5 involved/required professional machining, and never once ran into so many problems. Short version, i had coolant leaking in to oil, pulled the head, couldn't see any obvious leaks, but suspected the fact that because the head was quite warped (~0.5mm) that it was just simply a head gasket failure. The head has serious problems, but i cannot source a new one, so I'm doing a bit of a dodgy patch up just to get the car into a position where it can be run. While i have the head off, i thought now would …

Gidday guys, I'm having ongoing problems with my little 4k kp bugeye. To save a long story... I'll try generalise this as much as i can. I've been battling pinging issues and now hard starting(also won't idle on its own) So far I've replaced coil, spark plugs(twice) leads, rebuilt the carb, replaced manifold gasket with a one piece(slight vacuum leak from coby headers) I got the motor to run without pinging after i ripped the dizzy out and shifted it around. but the timing was way too advanced so i pulled it out again to restart the process. Which made it worse, it won't idle on its own and the pinging is back. I'm certain I've lined up the…

For general interest. Whilst continuing the grandfathercation of my AE86, and removing various parts considered extraneous, I was finishing bolting the struts back in and noticed this. I’m pretty particular, and when installing them, they were lubed within an inch of their life with the supplied grease, and torqued to specification whilst on the ground, which was damn hard as it was pretty low. Since then, it’s done about 10 kms in 10 years Then I had a look at the other side! Not good, and difficult to explain. Fortunately at least, I noticed it, and also I was having a last look around today before putting in an Amayama order. So will be a…

So I'm pulling off my 5k head to do some stuff, however, I got all but 1 off. (because I'm smart and rounded it) After about an hour of working. My dad welded a ring spanner onto it and finally got it off, but it snapped inside. After getting everything else off. the Head is free from all the block but that one corner, could the bolt possibly broken threaded between the two? Cheers.

G'day fellas, I've recently picked up a 5k and twin SU carbs. I have stripped the carbs down and cleaned them up. However, I can't see how the PCV hose will have it's run off. What way are they normally hooked up? A catch can? (AltezzaClub? I've read how you set up yours, but I couldn't see the vavle) Cheers!

anybody here, particularly those of u with a 4age have this coil. its listed by fuelmiser as being for the AE82 4AGE, but I'm running it on a 4k with internal ignitor. I was hoping someone could tell me what their coil resistance is between the high tension port and the positive terminal. This is known as the secondary coil resistance. Mine is reading only 6k ohms but i believe the std 4Age coils are up at a minimum of 11k ohms, so imagine this replacent should be similar :/ but its not. the primary windings specs match just fine at 0.6 ohms. however the 4k handbook (ke70) shows the stock dizzy specs as follows for the 4k with igniter - 10-15k ohms…

Hey guys I've been chasing a misfire/det for the last two weeks and suspected it to be a manifold gasket leak on my wee 4k in the second cyl. So earlier I ripped both manifolds off and to my surprise found them really easy to remove?! Gasket was near new condition, so I was thinking maybe previous owner didn't tighten them down enough? Causing the leak? How firm can you tighten these bad boys down? Anyone know the torque settings? or can I just keep them tighter than a nun LOL Just don't want to strip or round off the bolts... happy I've possibly found the cause to all this drama... cheers!

hey all. ive talked a lot in recent posts about certain things and thought i owed it to everyone to put some pics vids of my findings up here. everything here is on stock carburettor on a 4k-U block with dished pistons, and dry compression at about 150 PSI. firstly, spark plug reading . i used to have black plugs, which was a result of a rich mixture when coasting and seriously rich mixture on deceleration due to the idle circuit supplying an uncombustible overrich amount of fuel when the throttle is closed shut or nearly closed and manifold vacuum is high. This creates huge suction on the fuel from the slow jet and doesnt pull in any air at all really…

Gday guys, Jay here. Complete noobie to this forum so bare with me lmao. I recently brought a dream car of mine, 1980 Kp60 Bugeye starlie. 4k motor with twin choke single carb and Gilmore pullies. pretty standard. But To cut a long story short.... I brought this planning to get it road worthy. It ran bloody well up until after I put a fresh wof/reg on her and did a full service. I changed the motor n filter, gearbox, diff oils, plus coolant and air filter. The fuel pump had a slight weep from the gasket so I took it out, cleaned it up and attempted to repair it with some rtv lol. Then later that night when I was out she started idling quit…

Has anyone on here, ever installed an oil cooler to their car? any car? If so, did you have an oil temp gauge before with any idea how much of an impact it made to oil temps? I cannot find any information on the net about just how much cooler engine oil is when a cooler is used. liek ball park even 1 or 2 degrees, 10 degrees, 20-50, 80?? Anyone know anything about the subject? I ask because id like to consider cooling my oil to keep the viscosity up there for this old engine. when me 4K is hot, it clicks n slaps n knocks at idle.. these old motors don't have much oil pressure at idle when the oil gets hot. Factory specs say 28.4 psi at 300rpm, i get…

For my first question can someone please tell me what size tyres will fit in my standard rear wheel arches and how wide I can go. I'm thinking 225 r17.

Ok so there was a member request for KE corolla weights from the old "Qld Code of Practice - Light Motor Vehicles" I have dusted off the old book and taken a few pages regarding the KE rolla weights and some relevant pre/post pages, https://www.pdf-archive.com/2017/07/11/queensland-code-of-practice-selected-pages/ The unlock: corolla These selected pages are for engine swaps regarding vehicle weights for both pre - approved swaps and weight based swaps. Note the page numbers as this is not an extract page after page, its separate relevant pages as needed.

Hey Guys So the Princess' 55 hardtop is in need of a new dizzy cap, rotor button and points. The current dizzy cap is a Bosch. My question is as follows coz the dizzy cap is a Bosch does that mean the dizzy itself is a Bosch and I have to use all Bosch replacement parts or is there a better product out there that will suit the application. I don't know if it makes any difference but the dizzy has 2 vacuum lines coz she is an auto.

Hi there, I'm new to this page and I'm really needing help! so I have a ke30 with 4k in it. From memory the engine just stopped going a few years back. Iv locked it away and now Iv decided that I wana make it run. Iv charge the battery fully and Iv tried turning it over but all it does is make a click sound. I googled around and figured it might be the starter. Got a new one tested it and still the same. I unbolted the starter and pulled it out so I could see the gears. Left the power and ignition cable connected then I use my jumper cables to earth the starter. Turn my key and the start pops out and spins overrated. When …

Hey guys, when I bought my ke30 about 6 months ago, it had a welded diff in it and I soon got sick of it. Bought another Banjo diff, dead and was so loud it gave me a headache in 10 minutes. After putting the weldy back in and driving around I'm sick of it. I suddenly realized that we have a wrecked YR22 Tarago. I've done a bit of reading up and seen that some people put YR21 diffs in, are YR22s different? Of course I'd need to shorten and put on leaf mounts and new shaft. Is it worth it? Would it be to heavy or the ratio be way out? Cheers!

The ignition switch in my AE86 has lost it's "action". By which I mean that it is a bit sluggish when turning the key, and doesn't spring back promptly to ON after you start it, and release the key. I've removed the ignition lock from the housing, and it just feels like it needs to be dismantled, given a good clean and lubricated. Does anyone one know how to remove the barrel from the lock? Also, I'm wondering if the switch wiring section with the plastic cartridge in it contains a spring, as there is clearly no return spring mechanism in the lock itself. I intend trying to buy a replacement one of these as my wiring has been cut up over the years.

Finally got some time to do some coilover adjustments on my Corolla. I installed new outter/inner tierods, 8kg springs front and 6kg at back, then had the car corner balanced after. Not really happy with the ride weight. Just trying to mimic the adjustments. It may have been better if i waited for the new springs to settle before the corner balancing. Lesson learned. Have a good day all.

Hello all from Appalachia! Great forum, been reading for months, recently purchased a 1979 Corolla and trying to get it ready for summer. I've been in automotive profession and old car hobby for 33 years, but this is my first vintage Toyota and I'm loving it. I have some questions and hope you can help me, for starters... 1. These 2TC engines have a flat tappet camshaft so I should be running a quality old school oil with high ZDDP, but I'm concerned with viscosity. The original manual states 20w50 on the back, but also 10w40 for summer temperatures in the charts, what do most people run these days? 2. Have any of you used Redline MTL in the T50 transmission? Re…

I'm wondering if anyone is equipped with a vac gauge and could test something for me, i smashed my 2 dollar handheld gauge when trying to perform a test. I would like to know what reading you get when accelerating from lets say, 20 to 50 kph with standard gentle driving. one might say, thats like asking how long is a piece of string, but in reality the difference between 2 people performing this test on very different cars should actually be pretty minimal.

I did post this in non Toyota, but that doesn't show up in anyone activity feed, so i got 0 views over 12 hours. I have a question for those with points type ignitions. My GFs dads car is playing up a bit when cold. IIts a suzuki Multicab wiht a 3 clinder 12 valve engine. Has a nasty missfire. It had this missfire a couple of days ago and i fixed it by hammering the spark gaps back down to recommended spec (0.8mm) from about 1.2mm. This fixed it and everyone was happy. Now its started again jsut now as he drove off to the shops.. I'm certain its spark related. Not sure if it has points, but am willing to look. My question is, has anyone had an issue where a…
