4age in ae 71. has been going good decided to replace inlet gaskets. now it wont idle. its sits between 1500 and 2000 RPM. as though the throttle is stuck on but it isnt. have checked everything have bought new gaskets to replace the ones ive just put in. have zip tied the ''powerband'' throttles shut as process of elimination. Have noticed fifth injector is wired but has always been that way is i got the car.. Any suggestions?? its a 16v with higher comp haltech ecu O2 censor never been wired. temp controlled throttle setup thing blocked trying to provide as much info to make it easier to diagnose

hi i l finally got my 4age bigport tvis running in my ae71, it runs not bad but every now and then it splatters down low and feels like its choking and idles alittle high, i have the cold start vavle blocked off(big hole in throttle body), check for vacum leaks none, timing is fine, if any one has any ideas what else to check it will be appreciated, and also does any one no of any workshops with experience with these engines in melbourne near the northern suburbs?????????

hahaha I'm kidding ;) but I am having a little bit of trouble with one component. I have just recently bought a 4age manual out of a (jap spec).. ae82 (1982) red top. big port and was fwd. but when I bought it, I didn't get an ecu or a dizzy. as it was from a wreckers. I went out not knowing this and bought an ecu for an ae92... and a dizzy to suit that same model. dam... :down: did not fit. so my question is. what ecu can I get for this piece of, lovely goodness engine I have taking up space at work. hahaha I have thought after market but even then I'm not sure cause there is so many to choose from. any help would much greatly appreciated!!…

hi all, I'm doing a 4age into ke70 conversion and have come across one of many problems, the rubber on the motor side of my injectors don't fit snuggly into the holes, they slip in and out with no effort. my question is, is this how they are supposed to be or do i need to invest in a new set of rubber rings? my thoughts are that when the fuel rail pressurizes the injectors gets pushed into the hole and they seal from the amount of force placed on them from the fuel rail. any help appreciated cheers

Hi All I have been offered a fwd '96 Trueno with a 4age for $500 is it worth getting this nd ripping the motor out to put in my 30 ?? what extra parts will I need, any Ideas of the overall cost. I know I will need mounts and gearbox. I am pretty sure its a bzg trueno with a blacktop.

Ive had my small port 4age with manual transmission in a ke35 coupe for a couple of weeks now..... have developed an unusual jolt/shake.... heres what happens.... Normally most felt when in second or third gear going slow (under 40kph) under light accelaration just cruising along, it will be going along fine then suddenly it will start this jolting and shaking as soon as i accelarate abit more it stops......... i had a feeling its a bad/worn clutch but the clutch feels fine otherwise......... could it be engine mounts not good causing this issue???? when under harder load and driving faster will never make this jolt/shake only when at low speeds with small amnt of …

hey all I'm not brilliant at mechanical fault finding so here is the problem 4age from an ae86 (RWD manifold) just dropped into a ke70 and it is doing something wierd, if we unplug the injectors the engine doesnt change revs much (maybe 50rpm max) the idle is alright and at correct rpm, the TPS is set correct and there is plenty of fuel as you can smell its over fueling and see it on plugs too when you goto rev it the timing changes so much that it doesnt want to climb revs fast, gets up to temp like normal and stays there we suspect the oxy sensor is to blame but we don't to what degree it effects the performance (obviously mixture is effected but to what exten…

-while it obviously isn't under the bonnet. So the 4AGE sensor doesn't suit the KE70 tacho dash resistance, which means the AE71 dashes must be different to KE70s... I'll solve it over the next week, but I wondered if anyone had come across this. You fit the 4AGE and the temp gauge never goes up to the 1/3 mark. The radiator water is at 80+ degrees acccording to a thermometer.

Hi I have recently fitted a completely rebuilt jap spec bigport 4age to my ke20 and I am having trouble with it missing or surging, It happens once the revs get to about 3,200 but only under heavy acceleration, slow acceleration is fine, timing is set properly, it has a good strong spark to all cylinders, the engine check light isn't throwing and codes other than the speed sensor code when I'm cruising at 3,500rpm in 5th (I don't have a speed sensor), the TPS is set correctly, map sensor seams to be working fine, at idle if you give it a quick rev it blows a tiny bit of black smoke, could be running rich? My 4AGE makes a noise that I think it's valvetrain related but I'm not sure. I recorded a video of it, after I give a little throttle, we can hear a "rrrrrrrrrrrrrr" sound. What do you think?

Hi all, seems that I am asking a new question each week in general mechanical. So I have done an oil change on my smallport 4age. The motor is from a wreckers but goes very hard, from what I gather the odometer said on the wrecker car the engine has done anywhere upto 300,000. I have suspicions it has been rebuilt at some stage. Changed to fully symthetic mobil 1, (my mate kept talking it up) so the car runs fine but oil pressure is all over the place on cold start the oil pressure shoots up to 6 bar (87 psi) and with the slightest tap of the accelerator the pressure raises even higher. once the car is warm it stabilises a lot and goes down to around 3.7 b…

alright so iv got a smallport 4age and it looks like its leaking a small amount of oil from the sump seal. maybe a drip or two every 12 hours if iv been driving. but its been going on long enough that the dipstick is showing very close to L while the cars still hot. My question is, Should i get the sump resealed and do an oil change then, or ignore the sump do and oil change and ignore the small leak?

hi I have a 7 rib block but it has no oil return pipe, The other 7rib I have has it and also oil squirters. Can I still use a smallport head on the block with no oil return pipe??

I'm chucking a 4AGE on carbies (because carbie are Sik :wink: and sound awsome :hmm: ) into a rather clean RT40 corona. Mounts are sorted, carbie linkages are sorted, exhaust is sorted, cooling is sorted, fuel is sorted, clutch is sorted (RT40's have hydro clutch from the factory :y: ) However ignition isn't sorted. I've heard rumors that you can use a 4AC dizzy, with a sleeve and all's good? is this possible, do you need anything else, an ignightor for example. Has anybody got ignition kits for carbie engines? I am unsure which engine to put into my KE55 either a 4AGE 16 valve or RX7 series 5 halfcut. The 4age seems reliable but id have to cut the gearbox tunnel to fit the W55 gearbox and I'm not sure how much power i would get. the rotary would give alot of power but doesnt seem so reliable, but I'm not sure what mods would need to be done. If anyone has done any of these conversions and knows how much power these give and the mods needed could you please let me know? Cheers Leigh

hey i have a problem with my 4age in my 93 rolla idling when the AC is on she idles at about 600-1000 when ac is on and is unstable, she doesnt just sit on 1k or 600 she moves all over the place!!!! does any one know how i can fix this? my 4age uses too much fuel she goes through pretty much a full tank in little over 150ks and i have only a pod in the car, can anyone help on this?

O.k to start this is a 16 valve 4AGE in an 87 model AE82 hatchback. Anyone know if there's a simple reason why my motor is blowing smoke seems to mainly be grey ? The car has plenty of power actually goes real well. Only thing is it does idle inconsistently it jumps up and down. Also the tappet cover gaskets are leaking but i wouldnt think that was the cause as it mainly seems to be burning off at the extractors. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

I wont go into the list of parts, but it is substantial, i have bought very high quality parts throughout and should have a redline above or around 9k rpm. Hi guys, Looking for your expert advice/help. I have recently installed a Blue top into my honda s600 for hillclimb work. The engine itself is producing 68kw ATW with peak power at 6250RPM. I am happy with the power ( std ECU) but with my gearing a few more revs would help out ( mid corners). The engine runs out of Revs at 6700RPM (seems a little low). I am not running any O2 sensor - Would this cause the problem? I have a surge tank and am running 2* EFI pumps (external). As mentioned it is std ECU. I am running 5/16 fuel line to engine and 1/4 back to the fuel tank. Home made extractors ( limited space) are 4-1. Your help is much appreciated.

iv been having a weird idle issue with my smallport 4age. it will start out at 2k RPM when its cold which is fine, but once its had a chance to warm up it will usually sit just above 1k RPM and thats fine too. But every so often, especially on hot days, il be sitting at the lights and the RPM will drop to 900-950 and shudder a lot. and if its been sitting out after iv been driving and i get back in it will start up fine but immediately drop below 1k idle and choke out and stall. that's only happened twice though. any ideas what could be causing this?

Hey, i've taken the inlet manifold off my smallport 4age to do a bit of work to it, anyway, i noticed that the ports on the manifold are quite noticeably smaller then the ones on the head...... whats the go here then? Surely they didn't come standard like this? I'm thinking of porting out the manifold to match the head, but il ask here first just in case. Am i maybe missing something? Is there a plate thats ment to be bolted between the manifold and the head? Piccy attached so you know what I'm going on about, the dark oval visible on the flange is where the inlet port has been bolted to, and you can see the smaller inlet from the manifold sitting 2mm or so inside it…

Hy guys never thought I'd be one of those people that ask questions on a forum but I'm seriously out of ideas. car - ae92 engine - jdm smallport 4age problem- wont rev ok so it just seems to not run right, it'll idle just fine but as soon as you blip the throttle it does and starts to stall like its sucking in too much air and not supplying the fuel for it. Hey guys just got the 4age running in my ke70 and went for its first short drive yesterday, so it idles fine after we played with the dizzy for a bit but sounds like a wrx under load anyone know what the go is? hey guys just wondering if anyone with a 4AGE has had any problems with the area where the spark plugs are filling up with water? just went to crank my bros twinky over.....and the top plug cover must have leaked and was full of water. also is there a simple solution? cheers guys.

I would like to find some plug wires with a 90 degree plug to the distributor side. The engine is a blue top with factory cover, between cam covers. Would there be any compatible leads out there. The only ones i can find all have straight ends. hey guys iv got a 4age 20v silvertop, she has been running sweet for the past few years last night it just didnt start its cranking but not turning over. so far iv checked - coilpacks are working - sparks are working - fuel is been fed through (checked the in line) plus all new pumps (2months old) - battery is fine even tried jumping it - checked all fuses all seem fine (running a razorback ecu) this is the first time that this has happend :( totes randy. i have a feeling the injectors are blocked :/ but iv sprayed the cleaner through the ITB's (trumpets) ....

I hate starting threads but... 4age bigport 16v from an AE82 No O2 sensor When I start it, it will catch, chugalug, cough, sound sick so I turn it off. Wait a bit, (2-3 seconds) turn it back on. Start, and it will either do the same thing( go to line 3) or fire really good. So annoying. Ideas? EDIT: Should mention he 'said' he got a new ECU and MAP sensor?
