My 4AGE makes a noise that I think it's valvetrain related but I'm not sure. I recorded a video of it, after I give a little throttle, we can hear a "rrrrrrrrrrrrrr" sound. What do you think?

anybody here, particularly those of u with a 4age have this coil. its listed by fuelmiser as being for the AE82 4AGE, but I'm running it on a 4k with internal ignitor. I was hoping someone could tell me what their coil resistance is between the high tension port and the positive terminal. This is known as the secondary coil resistance. Mine is reading only 6k ohms but i believe the std 4Age coils are up at a minimum of 11k ohms, so imagine this replacent should be similar :/ but its not. the primary windings specs match just fine at 0.6 ohms. however the 4k handbook (ke70) shows the stock dizzy specs as follows for the 4k with igniter - 10-15k ohms…

OK, so I just assembled my XT130 struts and springs and camber tops, using the XT130 LCA's, and TTT AE86 PS knuckle. Put on my 14" wheels and they don't spin? The caliper is not touching, and can't see anything else fouling? Before installing the hubs spun freely? I think the dust shield is pushed up against the rotor. does the AE86 Knuckle move the strut inwards? I'm thinking I have to remove the dust shield, or grind down the end of the LCA(don't want to do this.....)or get a NRCA? Anyone else come across this?

OK lads, After fussing with my old and crusty Aisan for nearly a week, I threw in the towel after realizing gas was leaking out the main shafts. A few days later, and I have a nice and shiny Chinese copy sitting on the wife's kitchen table. Ahh, but it looks like some changes occurred in the design. - Top cover of new carb had the fuel inlet clocked 90 degrees the wrong way, and a different thread size for the central air inlet stem bolt. To save aggravation, I just swapped in my old top cover (painted black because ugly). - Circled in green here looks to be a bimetallic switch which is controlling vacuum by some preset temperature. This fe…

Hello people, On my 5K, am planning to run a cast-iron exhaust manifold with the dual-downpipe exit. This has a 3-bolt attachment, whose flange looks just like the one for a Subaru EJ20 (but I don't know if it is the same). Does anyone have a source for the Toyota flange in stainless? Or has anyone made a drawing pattern of it? Having a hell of a time finding the subaru flange dimensions to compare, or even the toyota gasket dimensions. (My van, but not my actual paint job)

Hi, Is it possible to frankenstein my W56 gearbox and the fifth gear from a W58 in it. Also, how expensive would it be for a transmission shop to do it. Cheers.

Hey guys! So while i'm building my 5k, I have gotten to the point of putting the pistons in. I'm using 40 thou over and rings to suit. However, when I compress them with the tool, it doesn't compress right round equally. and so when I try and lighty tap them into the cylinder they instantly bind. Is this a common problem or am I doing something wrong? I've gapped them to their spec. (Everything is well lubed up and this is how I do it at work and no problems) Cheers!

On the past months I've been building a worked 5K with the following specs: +0,5mm oversized pistons 2mm oversized valves 290º camshaft with vernier pulley set to max lift at 103º as indicated by the technical sheet 5K/3F solid lifters with 4K adjustable gear Ported head to match the 1 piece gasket Block and head machined, around 10,5:1 compression ratio. Lightened flywheel and crankshaft In order to have a smooth 1st start, particularly in order to run in the camshaft I used the standard dizzy and carb with the main jet of the carb drilled from 0.96mm to 1.1mm. This is how the engine ran: Au…

OK, so say you want your project car to be bare metal on the roads. Now you strip back the paint only to find there are some hale size dents in the rear quarter pannel and chips on the gaurds...... 😞 How do you fill in the holes and make the metal it look original again? Cheers. ==O|-[_]*[_]-|O==

I have a 1985 KP36. I've made a lot of mods on it mainly on the mechanical part. 1. Changed the stock 2K for a 4K motor (Brand new cylinder block) 2. Put a Weber DGV 32/36 3. Switched the T40 gearbox with a T50. 4. Put new Headers and new Radiator with a low temp racing thermostat. All these are great. The problem I have is on the freeway. My Differential is a stock KP36 (picture attached) one with a ratio of 43:10 (4.3) so travelling long distance is a pain and hard to reach top speeds. I need to get me a 3.9 ratio differential in so I will be able to cruise at 100-130 KMH with the engine at low RPMs. Is there a way I can only switc…

I wanted to start a discussion with those with mechanical minds, and hopefully not have it become an argument. TO THE INTERNET!!! My little poor old 4k is on its last legs until its rebuild which should happen beginning of next year. To keep oil pressure up while driving over the mountains, when it all gets hot, ive had to add an oil conditioner product which did exactly what it claimed to do. I put in 3 litres of new mineral 20W-50 and stuck in about 300 mls of this additive stuff. without the additive, my cheap gauge wasnt registering a thing driving up hills all the way to about 3500 rpm. After putting it in, i was getting some oil pressure back and that has go…

Got these Aisan Iso SU carbs. The guy that I got it off said they 1.5" SU's from a Datsun, but when I rubbed a bit of grease off they were Aisan instead of Hitachi's. I think they might be off a sports version of a corona, 1600S or mk2 or something. The code on them is HF40D. The bolt pattern per carb to the manifold is triangular (3 bolts, 2 upper 1 lower) The manifold looks like it is heated one. Maybe the SUs were taken off a corona and put in a Datsun. I've search the net and looked in books in the library but can't really find much about them. Does anyone one know what these came out of, and what they are like? Bruce

Hey guys, I bought an engine setup today but I can't find any info on people having used it so I'm wondering if it's possible. It's a stock 7afe head to be mounted onto a 16v 4age block with smallport pistons. Any info or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey guys just recently brought my 1987 Ka67 AUTOMATIC Toyota Carina for a steal. Its running a 5k 3 speed automatic box and was curious to see if a k50 manual would bolt up to it? If so, what pedal box can i use to operate the clutch which was never there? I know its not a corolla, but i thought I'd give it a shot, sick of the crummy auto box already! Cheers!

For anyone who got too frustrated, and just asked the parts store to look at each piston, sorry that this was too late. This should probably go on the wiki page. Ask me for the xl file with the data. Not totally finished yet, but what i have done is confirmed correct. Sources: japan-parts.eu (some incorrect data verified by other sources) Precision intl (pictures) Alibaba (good source of cheap Chinese exporters with product photos) rollaclub (images) ebay (people selling new products in boxes with part numbers) JCC Pistons (Dimensions) http://www.jcc-tw.com/en/

I decided to replace my front shockies due to a major leak which caused a failed warrant of fitness. So i ripped into bnt and ordered a full set thinking all would be all cool.... Backs went in piece of piss... But to cut a long story short the front struts were completely different to the ones that i ordered. Apparently the ones i ordered were factory Carina inserts, but they have no seat for the spring?! Surely i shouldn't have to weld one on? so I'm guessing somebody along the line has converted the fronts to ke70 struts maybe?! I'll attach the struts in comparison and the list the part numbers. Because both struts have different part …

Gday guys! So I'm in a bit of a pickle at the mo. Took my car for a warrant(new zealand) to get it road worthy. Its failed on blown drivers side shock and cracks in the body/floor above the diff head. To cut a long story short the diff(from previous owners attempts to lower the car) had been slapping against the floor causing it to crack. Its been lowered(flattened leaves i think) and the bump stops above the ubolts have been cut in half! Lol but the stopper above the diff had been left normal height? If i ordered a generic set of lowering blocks would it stiffen up the rear and stop the so called diff slap? I'm guessing its getting the extra travel from the b…

Hello, I'm new to the site, just came across it while searching for how to fix my recently aquired 1983 starlet. I've used the search function and haven't been able to fix it yet. The previous owner hooked the battery up backwards, when purchased the car wouldn't do anything. I replaced a wire coming off the battery and it has power now and will turn over. I don't think the injectors are pulsing. The ecu is sending the pulse signal, I've replaced the solenoid resistor with one from a junkyard(don't know if it's good or not). Both wires going to the injectors are hot. I can pour gas in the intake and it will run. When I turn the engine over the injectors aren't pul…

For general interest. Whilst continuing the grandfathercation of my AE86, and removing various parts considered extraneous, I was finishing bolting the struts back in and noticed this. I’m pretty particular, and when installing them, they were lubed within an inch of their life with the supplied grease, and torqued to specification whilst on the ground, which was damn hard as it was pretty low. Since then, it’s done about 10 kms in 10 years Then I had a look at the other side! Not good, and difficult to explain. Fortunately at least, I noticed it, and also I was having a last look around today before putting in an Amayama order. So will be a…

I listened to a podcast today, whilst driving my Rolla, to drop off my daughter for uni, that had me asking the question of myself, “why am I so attracted to olde Rollas ?”. This question rolled around in my head for an hour or so, & I eventually, came up with the simple & most singular answer . . . . they are so reliable. The podcast also had me thinking about the philosophy of the people at Toyota, in the early days, when they started their design of a small car for the masses. It is not a co-incidence, that the name of their early models was the, “Publica”. Like many of us, here in Australia, if you are over 50 years old, your first int…

Giday all. On my way out of cebu, back to perth, I went to the middle of hell, the streets of old cebu city, stopped in at all the stores that sell surplus engine parts and found the worlds holy grail of toyota k engine parts. ANGELS SING!! So, when i head back, i will have myself a correct 4K-U cylinder head, with the lugs under 1 and for indicating its for dished 4K-U pistons. FYI, this head was stamped number "1" so our wiki page is incorect. The combustion chamber section of the head is notably smaller in volume than my non twin squish head, designed for flat tops. In photos you cannot really tell, but when its in your hand, u can visually see with depth per…

Gidday guys, I'm having ongoing problems with my little 4k kp bugeye. To save a long story... I'll try generalise this as much as i can. I've been battling pinging issues and now hard starting(also won't idle on its own) So far I've replaced coil, spark plugs(twice) leads, rebuilt the carb, replaced manifold gasket with a one piece(slight vacuum leak from coby headers) I got the motor to run without pinging after i ripped the dizzy out and shifted it around. but the timing was way too advanced so i pulled it out again to restart the process. Which made it worse, it won't idle on its own and the pinging is back. I'm certain I've lined up the…

So I'm pulling off my 5k head to do some stuff, however, I got all but 1 off. (because I'm smart and rounded it) After about an hour of working. My dad welded a ring spanner onto it and finally got it off, but it snapped inside. After getting everything else off. the Head is free from all the block but that one corner, could the bolt possibly broken threaded between the two? Cheers.

I recently began rebuilding the T50 transmission (AE86 Corolla) in my 1981 Starlet. It has a left hand starter motor and a right hand throw out arm. Normal. My donor transmission is also a T50 and is identical except that it has a bellhousing also with the starter on the left.....But with the throw out ALSO on the left. Just below the starter. My engine is a 4AGE. Was the donor car a 3A or 4A. (I never saw the car that this tranny came from) Is this "left handed" bellhousing unusual or sought after?

I am in need of a bit of advice from anyone with experience in the area of engine rebuilding. I've done lots of rebuilds in my time, about 20, of which only 5 involved/required professional machining, and never once ran into so many problems. Short version, i had coolant leaking in to oil, pulled the head, couldn't see any obvious leaks, but suspected the fact that because the head was quite warped (~0.5mm) that it was just simply a head gasket failure. The head has serious problems, but i cannot source a new one, so I'm doing a bit of a dodgy patch up just to get the car into a position where it can be run. While i have the head off, i thought now would …

Car: 1982 ke70 Engine: 4age 16v Small Port. Gearbox: T50. Turbo: Garret T28. Intercooler: Stock 180sx Intercooler. Hey guys so I am about to install my 4age 16v Small port into my Ke70, I'm just waiting on a few parts to come in and then shes ready to go. I recently Picked up a Turbo and Stock Intercooler from a 180sx, the turbo is a Garret t28. I'm just wandering what else I need to run this setup, apart from the obvious which would be a turbo timer, boost gauge, and piping.. I'm new to ke70's, Turbos, and 4age's. Ive been told alot to buy a 4agze or 3sgze bottom end, but I'm not really keen to spend that sought of money.. If anyone knows of anybody who has…

G'day fellas, I've recently picked up a 5k and twin SU carbs. I have stripped the carbs down and cleaned them up. However, I can't see how the PCV hose will have it's run off. What way are they normally hooked up? A catch can? (AltezzaClub? I've read how you set up yours, but I couldn't see the vavle) Cheers!

Hey guys I've been chasing a misfire/det for the last two weeks and suspected it to be a manifold gasket leak on my wee 4k in the second cyl. So earlier I ripped both manifolds off and to my surprise found them really easy to remove?! Gasket was near new condition, so I was thinking maybe previous owner didn't tighten them down enough? Causing the leak? How firm can you tighten these bad boys down? Anyone know the torque settings? or can I just keep them tighter than a nun LOL Just don't want to strip or round off the bolts... happy I've possibly found the cause to all this drama... cheers!

Gday guys, Jay here. Complete noobie to this forum so bare with me lmao. I recently brought a dream car of mine, 1980 Kp60 Bugeye starlie. 4k motor with twin choke single carb and Gilmore pullies. pretty standard. But To cut a long story short.... I brought this planning to get it road worthy. It ran bloody well up until after I put a fresh wof/reg on her and did a full service. I changed the motor n filter, gearbox, diff oils, plus coolant and air filter. The fuel pump had a slight weep from the gasket so I took it out, cleaned it up and attempted to repair it with some rtv lol. Then later that night when I was out she started idling quit…

hey all. ive talked a lot in recent posts about certain things and thought i owed it to everyone to put some pics vids of my findings up here. everything here is on stock carburettor on a 4k-U block with dished pistons, and dry compression at about 150 PSI. firstly, spark plug reading . i used to have black plugs, which was a result of a rich mixture when coasting and seriously rich mixture on deceleration due to the idle circuit supplying an uncombustible overrich amount of fuel when the throttle is closed shut or nearly closed and manifold vacuum is high. This creates huge suction on the fuel from the slow jet and doesnt pull in any air at all really…
