Alrighty well I had a bitch of a time doing this so I thought I'd put up a guide specifically for k engines. I've got an otherwise stock 4k-c engine in a 1980 ke55. before you start - i'd like to say that I'm pretty much re-writing a guide on toymods on this topic. I'd also like to point out that this I'm writing this for people like me who are new to the world of auto-electronics. If you're electrically minded you can probably skim over a lot of stuff here. If you ruin your engine or anything I take no responsibility... i don't know how you could do that, I'm just saying. There are other ways of doing this, such as finding a dizzy that suits that has an inbuil…

I have created a new sub-forum specifically for car electrics, Please feel free to post your questions here. For those of you that may not know, I have recently started an apprenticeship in automotive electrics. I'm still learning but I have a fairly good knowledge of certain things (KE70/AE71/AE82/AE86/Starter Motors/Alternators etc). Even if I don't know the answer I can possibly find out through my boss and co-workers if you need an answer on something. Keep the posts coming.. Oh and by the way, If you live around Brisbane I may be able to help you out with auto electrical work..

Hey, I was looks for a quick and simple power upgrade. My 16v 4age has had some minor head work, (port polish and grind), iridium plugs, 2" sports exhaust, Airpod, Turbo muffler, always run 98 oct premium fuel, 100% synthetic oil and all filters changed. Power steering and A/C pumps and belts taken off too just to get a few extra KW. I was thinking about getting bigger cams.. 272 deg and HKS cam gears but need to get an after market ECU Eg.. Haltech or something. The cost of getting one is quite a bit not to mention getting it tuned so going to hold off and maybe get a Gze from a Levin ae101 or something (all just thoughts for now) So another thing is that …

Hey guys, i'am trying to get my KE55 roadworthy, couple of little things that need to be done, - First of all is the fuel gauge, it doesn't move at all, i have checked the gauge itself and tested my KE30 one in there and it still doesn't work, i then checked the sender unit and took off the plug going to it, cleaned it and still won't work, can anyone else think of anything else? Lastly i took off some of the emission shit, will they knock that back for not being there? Thanks Trent

first off you need a vl 80amp alternator witch looks like this make sure you get the loom connector that plugs into the regulator! also grab a couple of regulators just in-case the ones in your vl alternator are worn! step 1 - dismantle the 4k alternator and vl alternators. step 2 - swap all the internals from the vl alternator to the corolla casing and use the vl fan (more fins = better cooling) step 3 - now remember those 4 LONG bolts holding the casing together? you need to find 2 about 2cm longer (i got mine from a 5k starter motor) step 4 - install those 2 longer bolts with the rear bracket and bolt it all up step 5 - install the regulator…

I have no spark coming out of my coil on my 79 ke55. Have tried everything to get spark out of it. The coil is only about 18 months old and worked previously. The only thing that I have done is put another 4k motor in with a 5speed manual, the car was previously auto. The car was running with the auto in it but now won't get any spark. I'm using the original harness to the car. Can anyone think of why I'm not getting any spark

So my KE30 is a 1975. has the external regulator for the alternator and what not. since i've had the car the low beams have not worked. the lamps and globes have been replaced. there is box on the passenger side that the headlight wires appear to run into so i would think that its the relay. 6pins! but on the box it says tail relay? my question is... has anyone else had this issue and how did you go about fixing it? ie. replace the relay with another one? buy a new one? (if yes then where and how much) or for someone cluey with electrics did you split the relay up? and have a couple of seperate ones to control tail lamps and headlights? cheers, Lu…

I think I had a thread about this before but I want to start a fresh one as I did a bit of work tonight to try and figure it out. The problem: Intermittent starting issues, sometimes it will start fine, other times the starter motor will struggle, even stop turning over. Sometimes when it does this it will run but it will run like complete crap blowing black shit out the exhaust. Things I have tested: The starter is hard wired to a push start button, I bypassed the button, its fine. When the car is in the on but not run position the starter motor will crank fine. In the ON position it will occasionally struggle to crank, when it does this my volt meter will…

i have a bigport 4age in an ae71 with stock computer when i bridge/short out the diagnostic port/check connector the idle doesnt change and the timing doesnt either. i have two ecu's one i set the timing at 18 degrees with diagnostic port shorted or not and it makes the extractors very very hot. when i plug in the other ecu it say 10 degrees with the diagnostic port shorted or not and still makes extractors very very hot. i looked at the wiring diagram and the diagnostic port is pin "T" then to ground, so i opened the ecu and and grounded the "T" pin and it still didnt change. so I'm a tad stumped at this point if anyone can shed some light that would be gre…

  21. Okay since I searched and found no info for people how to wire up a 5k electronic distributor I thought id make a topic to tell users. This is on my ke20 corolla so some things may be slightly different between models The 5k distributor is a pulse generating type with in built ignitor (ignition module). There is a two pin toyota connector with a black wire (negative) and a black with orange tracer (posative). Remove your old points distribtor, the 4mm black wire going to the distributor points is connected to the black wire on the two pin plug (this is negative switching for your coil). Connect the black with orange tracer to the posative side of your coil. …

My KE30 turns 50 next year, & I've planned on giving her a few extra features for her birthday. (I'm only Her second owner) One of the presents is to replace or modify, all lighting, inside & out, with LED lights. Headlights are pretty easy, as you can easily source "H4 bulb compatible" 4 sided LED Hi intensity lights bulbs. I've ordered a set this week, so that will be the first step. One of the best things you can do to an olde Rolla, is increase the capacity of the battery & alternator, although replacing the original crappy load bearing wiring, with cable a lot thicker, would be a close second. (I've already done that) …

Hi, Just messing around in the shed today with some alternators I have seeing what I can do for an up grade into my KE30 as the standard one now with a stereo on it is having trouble keeping the car charged. So I got out my old KE70 spare I have and another Bosch one I have unknown origin but it is rated at 70 Amps. At first look the body of the 70A one the mount was similar to the rolla one but it was about 10mm to long so it wouldn't fit. Could of used a spacer but that is messy. So I did a bit of fiddling and found the body for the KE70 one is the same size as this one. So I began pulling the 70A alternator apart to get the insides out so I can put it into…

Gday guys, my 35W 6000K HID kit will be in my '55 in a few days. Wanted 4300 or 5000k. Just curious, and yes i did search, how many people have done a HID setup before on their rolla, and how satisfied were you? Yeah yeah, i know its illegal to do it on a car that wasn't manufactured with it, but i drive mostly early morning and late night in the country. 2 of my mates have done HID setups, and never been hassled by the cops. Let us know. Thanks, Luke.

Hi, just a quick question here. I'm getting no spark from the coil, i've replaced the ignitor, leads, plugs, rotor button, cap and points. The one thing I am unsure of is how to set the points gap. I know it is ment to be arount 0.8mm but where are you getting that distance from and at what point of the rotation? So is it that I need to rotate the engine and make sure that the point only ever gets 0.8mm closed? Or is there an easier way? Cheers guys Alex

Hey, i bought a programmable ignition system from Jarcar some time ago for my Ke35. i finished building the electronics and got stumped over plotting the original igntion timing values. I have read the manual and it pretty much says to use the timing marks on the crank pulley, also another method is to use a secondary coil pack and an ellaborate setup. So i guess if someone knows the advance curve for a 3k motor or an easy way to plot the original curve it would be very helpful.

Hi all, just wondering, i have purchased a Smallport and its got 2 looms, one loom i have plugged up to the engine and the other loom I'm not sure what it is? Its definitely different to the engine loom, is it possibly an interior loom? and the smallest plug that goes into the ECU has cut wires, where does this go to? And can I run my original interior loom with the ECU? Also, is there any plugs on the engine that wont need to be plugged in at all? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I have moved along and fitted an electronic dizzy, one that KE Motorsport sells. Certainly cleaner at low revs or when cold, and I just added advance until it felt OK. Today I plotted an ignition curve, and I found I was running 18deg static advance to make it get up and go! So I've reduced it back to 8deg and plotted this- One set of figures with the vac unit on, one with the vac unit disconnected, and a Piper dizzy chart for comparison. That is what the Honda Accord uses, and is similar to the other dizzys mapped here- http://www.jcna.com/library/tech/tech0015.html I think the car feels much better with more advance early on, and I wondered who has had the…
